> I know Black Manta had autism in the comics, and there's a part of me curious if they adapted that part of his backstory into the film.

Not likely, that's one detail I imagine they're going to leave out

Speaking as an autistic person, the very idea of a "cure" of any sort is as offensive as fuck. Its like trying to "cure" sexuality or race. Just fuck that shit.

Plus it being the root cause of supervillainy. I don't even have the words...

That’s sounds like an older origin anyway from a less understanding time.

Manta’s current origin is a cycle of revenge where he accidentally killed Arthur’s father thus causing Arthur to try to kill him but he instead accidentally killed Manta’s own father thus kickstarting a war between the two that will never end.

Also Manta’s suit came from him & his father being pirates.

Honestly, I don't see how Black Manta having autism adds anything to his character (at least in a positive manner). Based on what little I know about him, he's a modern day pirate with a power suit that hates Aquaman for various reasons (whether it be him killing his father or maybe just pure greed for Atlantis treasure). He doesn't need autism to be the driving force behind his villainy.

So, the reviews come in...the movie seems to be on a level with Wonder Woman. Meaning, good, not necessarily great.

The first wave of Aquaman reviews are in and the movie is at 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lots of praise for the acting (people really love Momoa), visuals and action, but there seems to be a lot of criticism for the plot being run of the mill and some of the dialogue being really corny. But overall solid reviews.

[up]Was that pun intentional? [lol]

But seriously, it's doing just about as well as I thought it would: good but not great. Glad to hear that it's fun at the very least.

So I guess that makes technically Venom the dud of the year, being the only Superhero movie which was deemed rotten by the critics...not that it stopped it from being a success in terms of box office.

Not surprising, I expected the film to be good though not great, but also good enough. Unexceptional but competent, and probably catering to some sub-niche of the mass superhero film fandom.

It's kind of amazing we live in a world in which an Aquaman movie was better recieved and will likely do better in the box office than a Justice League movie and a movie featuring Batman figthing Superman.

IGN has Jason Momoa play the “respond to the comments” game with the usual results. He seems pretty happy in the clip.

[up][up] The same world in which Iron Man will be for a time more successful and beloved than an ongoing series of Spider-Man films, apparently.

So have we finally seen an end to the Aquaman is lame jokes that have plagued the character for years?

Honestly, even now, I still have doubts. People will not let go of Memes if possible.

The joke died long ago,but people like me like beating dead horses for fun,and far as we're concerned the joke is undying.

The joke long ago evolved into "My powers are stupid, they said...," and this movie will likely help things swing more in that direction.

Of course, I will be amused when the conversation eventually starts spinning around to "Well this movie is good, but the DCEU still sucks" that happened in the Wonder Woman thread. That is already the stock headline of half the articles on Aquaman.

Oddly enough, the reported mild criticisms of the film it actually makes me more excited to see it. The fact it is hovering in the 75-80 RT range for a high profile blockbuster has become an indication of a movie that takes a few chances, compared to the 90 range that has become synonymous with "largely inoffensive."

You can't expect that WB wins the trust of the audience back with two "good" movies which aren't even released in a row. Also, there is a difference between WB starting to offer watchable movies again and said movies actually creating a cohesive universe.

Also don’t worry about people not thinking Aquaman is stupid. Family Guy and Robot Chicken probably have 50 skits prepped for such an occasion. No matter what it happens it seems Superfriends talk to fish Aquaman is the default.

MJ: I disagree, if anything it seen to held firmly in the "samemy movie as always" so I dont hold by breath for it.

Swan: maybe but it make reaaaaaally hard to actually make a thread to talk about the movie without saying "the universe SUCK!" every now and them, it kinda poison the whole thing.

The crazy evil brother or the sympathetic anti-villain brother?
