From Land of the Lustrous:

  • A Tumblr post calling out Haruko Ichikawa for her exploration of pedophillia, incest, and unhealthy relationships in previous works and their presence in Houseki no Kuni, as well as the sexualized artstyle of the series. One side agrees with the outcry and has boycotted her work; another has pointed out that these themes are for exploration rather than fetishization, which numerous other series have done, even those generally agreed to be "the greats" like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and so forth, as well as pointing out that numerous other male and even female mangaka have sexualized their characters or utilized those same themes for no other reason besides fanservice or for humor, yet could keep them in their work; and a middle side chooses to continue to enjoy Houseki no Kuni, though are ambivalent/won't defend Ichikawa’s previous works.

I feel like this is just a general issue with contemporary Twitter/Tumblr fandom in general rather than anything to do with this particular work. Also it's a conflict that is somewhat driven by a very Vocal Minority of Moral Guardian types. Most fandomgoers outside of, well, the "terminally online" and discourse-addicted simply do not care and usually take the latter two stances.

I feel like it's an automatic cut if your example begins with "A tumblr post", not to mention it doesn't even link the damn post.

On Quinton Reviews:

  • Broken Base: All discussion surrounding him splinters into aggressive rage as a result of his critics claiming his extreme disdain for criticism, accusing those who call him out on any behavior as being a bigot to the point of cutting off ties with close friends for their politically incorrect natures.

Complaining about complaining, doesn't actually discuss both sides, reads like someone's specifically personal issues dumped onto the page.

These examples on The Amazing World of Gumball feel like they have too much of a middle ground, something also feels off about the punctuation. There's another example mentioning how season 2 is divisive partly because of the Art Shift, but the way the Art Shift example is written still feels too middle-groundy for Broken Base. Also, isn't "The Shell" considered one of the best episodes in the series?

  • Broken Base:
    • Although you probably won't see very many people debate on it anymore, the new art-style that the show started using after Season 1 was predictably divisive. People either embraced the redesigns and more cartoonish look, were turned off at first but got used to it overtime, didn't notice it at all or were just straight-up dismissive of it and preferred the look of season 1 instead.
    • Fans were also divided on whether or not Jacob Hopkins and Terrell Ransom Jr. made for good replacements of Logan Grove and Kwesi Boakye in voicing Gumball and Darwin, with some fans claiming that the vocal change has ruined the show while others were put off by the change at first, but now don't notice or care, so long as the rest of the show is still good. The same arguments were used when Nicolas Cantu and Donielle Hansley, Jr. (and later, Christian J. Simon) were hired as replacements for Jacob Hopkins and Terrell Ransom Jr.
    • Similarly, some people (mostly fan artists who were used to drawing her as a doe-nut or people who thought she'd be a deer under her shell) thought Penny breaking from her shell hurt the show while others either embraced the new her or were put off with it at first, but now hardly notice or care, since she and Gumball are now a bit more open with their love.

Am I the only ones that think these from YMMV.American Horror Story Coven could use rewrite:

  • Broken Base: The season finale. Either it was a beautiful send-off or underwhelming.
    • The season itself.
    • There are still arguments to this day about whether Zoe should be the Supreme, due to displaying all Seven Wonders. This could be explained because Cordelia's powers were manifesting in other people, but many aren't buying it.
      • There's also a significant portion of the fanbase who believe Madison was the true Supreme and Cordelia assumed the supremacy right as Madison died. The editing of the show really doesn't help this one as Cordelia is finally able to successfully perform Vitalum Vitalis, her last of the Seven Wonders, at the exact moment that Madison is murdered. There is nothing in canon that suggests the supremacy can manifest in multiple girls per generation, although Apocalypse muddies this up slightly. Madison also successfully performing Divination on Hayden's skull at the Murder House completes her Seven Wonder bingo card. Aren't only Supremes able to master all Seven Wonders?.

Forgetting the improper indentation. The first two are zero context. The last two could probably be one and do with an extreme rewrite as they only really list one side. That is not even getting to the side that doesn't agree with either. Thoughts?

BrokenBase.Epic Rap Battles Of History has several examples that focus on the complainers more than the supporters and it's unclear how many of them are even real controversies within the fanbase. I'm familiar with the battles but not the fandom; can anybody else chime in? I can only remove very obvious misuse (like how the Biden vs Trump video attracted political debates, even though that's not really specific to the video itself).

YMMV.Ratchet And Clank 2016

  • Broken Base:
    • Even after Insomniac made it clear the game is a re-imagining of the first game, fans still tend to argue over whether or not it's meant to serve as a Continuity Reboot, or a one-shot re-imagining. The Plumber's joke that it's a reboot, as well as the concept of the game changing after the re-imagining announcement, doesn't help matters.
    • The fact that the game ran at 30 fps with occasional drops on the PS4 (as opposed to the PS2 games running at 60). Is it disappointing, or do you not care?

All of these are moot points nowadays. Rift Apart's existence makes it clear that this game is a one-shot re-imagining and that the 2002 game is still canon, just that the 2016 game is telling those events from Qwark's perspective. Also, "Where exactly the series should go next considering this game gets even more convoluted." violates Examples Are Not Recent.

The game also received a patch this year that made it run at 60 fps on PS5.

This entry under Monopoly seems to be an in-fandom versus out-fandom example. Also the two sides of the conflict appear to be about different things—"this game is well known to some, but others don't like it". Plus, the side that doesn't like it gets more detail than the other side. Any reason not to cut it?

  • Broken Base: For many people, it's the first thing that comes to their minds when challenged to play a board game. For others (in particular, more seasoned board gamers), it's a tedious, rage-inducing game tainted by house rules that gave the entire genre a bad name by causing people to think that all board games are long and boring.

[up]The fact that it's "some people like Monopoly and others hate it" as opposed to a conflict among Monopoly fans is reason enough to cut it. And even if we're allowed to look at board game fans as a whole, I don't think the conflict is vicious enough — the people who like the game tend not to talk or argue about it much, while more vocal and hardcore players generally agree that the game is bad.

I think it's just a case of Periphery Hatedom (it's hated by serious board games, who it wasn't meant to appeal to), where Monopoly already has an entry.

I found this on Grimoire of Zero:

  • Broken Base: The anime is not very popular with fans of the original novel series, as several of the more complex interactions and dialogue were cut or altered. The end result is just another generic dark fantasy anime with absolutely zero context whatsoever. Due to this compression, the adaptation begins to suffer Seasonal Rot as soon as episodes 3 or 4. The absence of romantic subplots is also a point of debate for the series.

This doesn't really explain anything positive about the anime, which I believe is required for Broken Base, and seems to be a different trope entirely. Should it be rewritten, moved to a more fitting trope, or cut entirely?

This Broken Base entry was added to YMMV.Banished From The Heros Party by ~willofone:

  • Broken Base: Some people have problems with the pace of the anime because they feel it's going too fast and runs the risk of overtaking the story.

It's too general and one-sided to be an example as-is. The only reason I don't outright delete it as a non-example is (a) it's the only example on the page and (b) I've already cut the page once for lack of suitable entries (it previously only had a ZCE Tastes Like Diabetes example). I sent willofone a Murky Example notifier and pinged them here to see if anything is salvageable.

Edit: Actually, looking at the first post, the entry as written doesn't meet any of Broken Base's requirements. Plus in hindsight it's speculative to boot. I'll go ahead and put the page on the Cut List. If we can make a substantial entry here it'll be a simple matter to recreate.

From YMMV.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Diamond Is Unbreakable:

  • All three openings, though generally well-regarded on their own merits, were divisive among fans to say the least.
    • The first OP ("Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town") is either a catchy tune that fits the tone of this Part well (especially if the listener takes a look at the lyrics, which do a good job of highlighting the intrigue and dark underbelly of the seemingly ordinary Morioh) or forgettable and lacking the epic feel of the previous openings.
    • The second OP ("Chase") is either seen as an intense representation of the fight between the main characters and Kira or a generic opening that would be more fitting in a show like Bleach. More people jumped over to the former camp when the translated lyrics revealed that the song could be sung from the perspective of the main heroes, or Kira.
    • The third OP ("Great Days") was hit with this especially since it is in competition with the widely acclaimed "Sono chi no Kioku" for a final arc theme. Considering how the previous opening for the halfway point had a Darker and Edgier feel to it, some were disappointed that it was Lighter and Softer and felt didn't work well as a final arc opening. Others, however, liked the opening for how upbeat it was, finding it fitting for the more relaxed tone of Diamond is Unbreakable. That being said, the Units ver. that serves as the ED for Episode 39, featuring vocals from every singer who contributed to the openings from Parts 1-4, is much less contentious.

I actually added the first example (and maybe the second, I don't remember) back when the show was first airing because I didn't know better. The broken base did not last long at all, and as the example says, all of these songs became very popular and well-liked after a while once people got used to them. It never really got to the point of heated arguments either, just "I don't like this song as much as the other ones".

I've never seen anyone dislike the first or third ones. The second one is still somewhat divisive in my experience. I think it's a decent candidate for that as people's opinions on it tend to be pretty split. Either they think it's a great song all the way through, a terrible/boring-sounding song made up by being clever with a good intro sequence to boot, or it's terrible and no amount of cleverness can make it interesting. Some people have softened onto it only because they like the third one that much.

This was just added to YMMV.Hazbin Hotel.

  • Broken Base: The announcement that the A24 production would recast several of the voices from the pilot created something of a rift in the fandom. Detractors have expressed disappointment, especially at the announcement that Michael Kovach would not be reprising his role as Angel Dust, with some fringe perspectives going as far as to claim that the decision was a betrayal of the original cast, many of whom contributed towards building up the show on their own time. Others have stressed that the fandom should withhold judgment until the final product, reminding the first camp that recasts happen all the time in the industry and that Hazbin's sister show also saw new voices following its own pilot.

Does this break the "no recent examples" rule, since the announcement occurred just a few days ago and the A24 version of HH isn't out yet?

Yes, also it doesn't seem like that much of a broken base since I've seen far more people disappointed about it, at best reluctantly accepting it. This is more They Changed It, Now It Sucks! though even that feels too early to call.

Broken Base from YMMV.Teen Titans Academy.

  • The handling of the veteran Titans have been met with criticism from fans, arguing they're basically side characters in their own series while sharing the second fiddle role with the students since Red X is constantly front and center. It doesn't help that what little is shown of them feels very like Tim Sheridan is just barely using the animated series as an example of how to write them. Not helping Sheridan's case is the first issue's joking about Nightwing's "Defense Against The Dark Arts" comment being met with the students explaining "it's nowadays problematic," as if Nightwing wouldn't be aware of the stigma attached to that book series now.

Example is a onesided complaining.

I found this on one episode of BoJack Horseman.

Broken Base: The mere concept of a 22 minute animated monologue has fans divided, with some thinking it's a clever idea and this episode is one of the strongest and others thinking it was a terrible concept to begin with and the result is neigh unwatchable.
So, I haven't even seen anyone seriously disliking the episode for being a full on monologue, and the episode has a 9,8 rating on IMBD, so not sure if this can be considered a broken base.
