Kojima tricked a publisher into giving him AAA budget for his super niche artsy game. Basically.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."So this game did end up getting nominated for GOTY at the game awards after all..
I sense Nepotism...
Watch SymphogearIs crap to put the guy from Famitsu and the one from VGA on the game,Kojima is Marketing God,not necessary artisty.
I only watch VGA for the announcements, don't exist such thing as impartial premiation, but this is very dubious.

Being a niche genre doesn’t make it a bad game, people. Though I will admit that Kojima’s got deep industry connections from his long and storied career, which will definitely influence people come awards time.
Didn't say it was bad. just that its odd that a game that just came out was already nominated over a bunch of other, better recieved games so far, is all.
Watch SymphogearIt's neat that the game's soundtrack got a nomination because it's really good, but I get the feeling they didn't really care about the work Ludvig put into it.
Death Stranding had a lot of hype leading up to it's release, has been well reviewed, and is something different in the current market. Hell Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is a GOTY contender, and a much as I enjoy that game I don't think it should be on the list over games like Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
If it doesn't get GOTY, I think it at least deserves Game Direction award.
Everything that lives is designed to end.I'd also argue best narrative, but I also haven't played any of the four other games in that category.
Disco Elysium is definitely a contender to deal with on that front. No idea about the other 3.
It's been 3000 years…Disco Elysium...Wonder what's the story is all about though. But yeah, Death Stranding's narrative is rather...Interesting.
I won't mind if DS also win best graphic awards too btw

"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."Yeah, Disco Elysium was fucking powerful; if it goes up against DS it'll probably lose due to bias/nepotism, which would be a damn shame. And that's coming from someone who likes DS.
There is this one idea I have that I'm conflicted about: what if DS was nominated for best multiplayer, instead of action/adventure?
I've also heard that Geoff doesn't get to vote for nominees. Journos do, and most of them gave DS high scores. So I don't think DS winning GOTY is that unlikely.

Everything that lives is designed to end.Actively going agiainst B Ts and MUL Es is surprisingly fun and satisfying. I guess it's due to the fact that most of the game I spent avoiding them. So, when it's time I decided to hunt them and steal their resources with all the new toys, it became almost cathartic. Combat is pretty easy (even in Hard) and nothing special, but I think that enhanced this catharsis factor.
And apparently letting B Ts lead you to bigger ones is the easy way since the combat isn't really hard and it clears up the timefall area (even if temporarily).
Everything that lives is designed to end.I checked the Metacritic user reviews again and there's definitely bots being used for negative reviews. On the first page alone I saw dozens of usernames that were just random combinations of letters ("Gubgh" "Gujh" "Fihg" "Dyhhg" "Yghed" to name a few) and all used extremely similar wording, format, and broken english ("Because is the biggest trash of the year," "This game is a big crap," "This time Kojima FLOP," "This game it's a pile of garbage and sh!t," as some examples.)

Lol...Those reviews made me laugh
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."I've said this before, but I can't help but feel that very significant portion of people are dead set on hating this game as if this was their reason for living. Is it because that the act of walking without any kind of combat (arguably the main reason why this game is getting criticized) is ingrained in people's mind as "not gameplay, just filler, therefore boring", even though in Death Stranding it's clear that you need to take many, MANY things into account when doing the supposed "walking"? I'd argue that it has much more mechanics and intricacies than many "game" games out there, requiring players to actively engage in the open world unlike most open world games.
I do think that "they don't understand cuz they like Co D or Fortnite" rebuttal is disingenuous, but there is a definite bias in the group that can't stand this game.
Off-topic, but I've had significantly more fun and engagement playing this supposed "boring trash game" than Witcher 3, the one everyone and their kittens are claiming to be a masterpiece.
Sorry if this comes off as incoherent rambling.

Everything that lives is designed to end.Witcher is a game about a monster hunter saving kingdoms, DS is a game about a delivery dickering to save America.
Both different types of games that fall into different niches, both equally valid.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Yeah, they're not exactly comparable games, I know.
Everything that lives is designed to end. Some of the game's features are really being overstated too. Like, I hear "Your boots degrade!" as if it's a constant problem. I've been able to walk for ages before needing to change my boots, and you can print a new pair at ANY linked delivery stop. I'm not convinced that anyone anywhere has ever HAD to use those plants that give you temporary footwear. I don't get how you could ever be lost without easy access to boots.
Kaze ni Nare!Once you get the walking apparatus, the game goes by much more smoothly.
It's been 3000 years…I had to use the plants because I only had one pair of boots when I went to do the junk dealer, ended up taking a longer route the first time, then had to go all the way back to the elder to get a new pair.
Granted this was entirely my fault and the result of several poor decisions.
Ziplines feel awesome to use btw.
Kaze ni Nare!
I do think it's a hard sell in some respects, and that's coming from someone who likes it for the most part.
