Complaints that this movie is unoriginal are particularly hilarious to me because, well, Oceans Eleven was a freaking remake. That's just a bizarre complaint.
... and saying the villain is undercooked compared to Andy Garcia in O11 is kinda damning since in the first one he's just... kinda... there? Just a wall of unpleasantness. I thought he his villain was the weakest part of the first movie.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That's accurate. The heist sequence is kind of flat and under-written; the heist in the Clooney movie is more interesting. And the villain, Bullock's old boyfriend that she wants revenge on, is kind of undercooked in comparison to the Andy Garcia character. There's no really satisfying line like "Find out HOW HE HOOKED INTO MY SYSTEM!"
It's the complaint you make when you are, intentionally or unintentionally, holding a female fronted film to a higher standard than a male one. Which people do all the time and don't even realize they're doing.
I watched this. On its own merits it's...okay. Fun romp with underdeveloped characters and a weak twist. But fun. Oh, and you know this film is for women because FASHION and JEWELS!
I still liked it. Richard Armitage has the gravitas to make a wonderful villian, so, yeah, he was an underdeveloped villian and disappointing. I'm also not a big fan of Deb's motivation being "a woman scorned" which is eyerolling. Do it for the hell of it, I say. I was happy he was there, though. Love me some Armitage.
The chemistry was good. If the backstories were better written, I would've liked it more. If someone can write a character-driven story about Bullock's and Blanchet's small con days, and Bullock dealing with living under the shadow of her cool, big brother and her cons blowing up in her face every once in a while, I'd like that.
BTW I like the Clooney version, but it ain't the best heist film ever...

"It's true that we had a gentleman's agreement, but unfortunately, I am no gentleman."I kinda liked that they robbed something typically seen as feminine. It's a bit on the nose, granted, and I hope that if there's a sequel they don't stick to that, but it was kind of cool to see that amount of effort put into something that usually gets minimzed/dismissed as Not As Cool As The Things Guys Like.
Read my stories!A contender for the actual best heist movie ever, Rififi, is about a jewel heist.
And you know, the whole jewels being one of the most common objects thieves/robbers take, both in fiction and real life.
So, in the poster that is on this film's Wikipedia page has "The plan is priceless" as the tagline. I think it's decent, but I personally prefer "Every con has its pros" as tagline, which the posters in my place's theatres have.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.Enjoyed the film. The prior Ocean movies were decent heist films but the overall point is to see the big name stars play off each other. Bullock and Blanchet are good together, but Hathaway absolutely steals the movie out from underneath everyone. The main issue is that the denouement was essentially wrapping up loose ends for 10 minutes, as a result the Unspoken Plan Guarantee twist didn't really stick like it should have.
Personally, I enjoyed the fact that, unusually for a heist movie nothing went wrong. The plan worked perfectly. They were not found out by the target, no fist fight or police chase was required. The few things they did not expect were dealt with quickly, and easily. It was perhaps the most competently executed scheme I've had the pleasure of seeing in this genre.
Well, I would say with a number of heist films things don't really go wrong, but are speed bumps ultimately handled either within the story (such as the magnetic cuff on the necklace) or All According to Plan, a "problem" that makes the audience think they are in trouble when they really aren't. That is a staple of the heist movie, hence the Unspoken Plan Guarantee. I do agree, though, that the extra long resolution exaggerates the impression that everything went off without issue.
Just saw it! Not perfect, but still a lot of fun. I liked that they robbed the Met Gala, while it may seem typical and feminine it actually added to the really good production and costume design. I don't need an Ocean's 9 but I'd enjoy it. I would want a female director instead or literally anyone else but Gary Ross lol
Just saw it - I don't see anything offensive about it honestly. Though honestly you'd think a jewelry-focused holdings would have female security guards, but I guess that was the point.

Also helps that it was planned thoroughly well and that one of the seemingly hiccup ends up joining them.

So the film sounds fun if flawed. Essentially what doesn’t work wouldn’t work with the old cast either.
