I've seen this come up elsewhere, actually. Obama sang Al Green in his first term, and Ellis apparently wasn't in office until Iron Man 3. There's actually even an Iron Man poster in the style of 2008 "Hope" posters that Tony holds up in Iron Man 2. So there isn't necessarily any error, although it would mean he wasn't reelected in the MCU. Maybe the alien invasion, SHIELD blowing up, and terrorist threats got someone more hawkish elected? Even if I don't think continuity was Luke Cage's big concern in referencing Obama.

Mmm...yeah, this could actually work...the election would have been in 2012, right? Because Ellis is already President around Christmas 2012....
Okay, I take this back. Obama apparently got only one term in the MCU.
Ellis is still president...but then, being targeted by Hydra has to be a badge of honor....I would certainly only elect people who were on their kill list.

Major spoilers here, so I'll just blank the whole thing out for those still watching.
I really, really liked the tradeoff from Cottonmouth to Mariah, and I was looking forward to that being the rest of the season. I admit to being a little disappointed by Diamondback's religious fanaticism, and him being Luke's half-brother. That just feels like something we've seen before. He takes the focus away from Mariah's growing villainy for several episodes, coming out of nowhere with a major personal vendetta against Luke. His obsession also doesn't really seem to fit with what we've heard of Diamondback and his hold over the criminal underworld, or the loyalty Shades has to him at first. The show even seems to recognize this the first time Diamondback and Shades are both in an episode together.
I did really like that the final fight between Cage and Diamondback is very public, with a crowd gathering and cameras all around. That's different from anything else in the MCU.
Maybe if Diamondback just showing up like a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere and Luke not understanding this unreasoning hatred the man has for him was *itself* drawn out as a plot point, a reveal that could carry over into another season— while leaving the duumvirate of Stokes/Mariah for the first season— that might have been really good. Like a deconstruction of both Daredevil and the Punisher. Meanwhile, Diamondback as a looming, background meta-character who never actually showed up was what I was expecting during the early season, based on the way both Stokes and Shades talked about him.

Just saw the first episode.
....there was an observation, I believe made by Julep, that this show not only has a MAJORITY black cast, it goes so far as to have a state of "black defaultness". He commented how unsettling that was as a proposition.
All the major characters are black, black historical figures and musicians are consistently referenced and the audience is expected to know them, and I can already see that the earlier comment (dunno if it was here or the regular MCU thread) about most major characters having a specific relationship with the "n-word" is true. That's honestly a remarkable degree of nuance that could have only come from a black person.
But I don't feel unsettled (I'm not a white person, but I'm not black either). I feel awed, actually. It's like staring into a whole new world, a whole new perspective I never see anywhere else. This show is THICK with an indescribable, soulful atmosphere.
Also it has the best opening of any marvel netflix show so far IMHO. The music in general is great

I don't think he was implying he was personally unsettled or anything (he spent the rest of his post lavishing praise on the show). His main point is that Luke Cage is a show that completely and utterly normalizes the black experience, without othering it. It is THE experience of the show.

Method Man is a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, they're considered one of the greatest rap groups ever. The various members (including RZA, GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and Method Man) have all released solo albums as well. There's nine members, if I remember right, and they more or less formed with the goal of changing hip hop forever (and they did). Hope that clears things up.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?![]()
Ah, alright. And he's totally right, this show is awesome.
I just finished it! And seriously, this might trump DD season one for me, which is in my top three favorite live-action Marvel properties from all time.
Looks like Claire is going to be in Iron Fist! I loved her larger role in this series. I can't say I'm not a little bit disappointed Danny didn't pop up, just for a little. It was a pretty unreasonable expectation anyway.
I hope Mariah and Shades will be back. Top-notch antagonist material. And Diamondback's getting experimented on...
I'm so hyped for the Defenders.
