Boo. We (I) wanted Daisy Ridley.
Edit- Mostly joking. Vikander is a great actress. But if you are casting a British character, why not hire a British actress?

She has lived in London for years by now IIRC.
So it's a prequel to the Angelina Jolie movies, showing a younger Lara Croft.
My kneejerk reaction is to say it sucks but nope. It may end up rocking.
Pretty sure they said it won't be connected to the Angelina Jolie movies.
But yeah, I was looking forward to Daisy Ridley.
What film makers say and what's actually true are usually 180 degrees apart. Besides the article did say it's a younger Lara Croft than what was on film before. Hence prequel, albeit not at this time officially confirmed as such.
The Spider-man in Spider-man: Homecoming is younger than the Spider-man we've seen on film before, but it's not a prequel to Amazing Spider-man.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the actress.
As long as they cast her because she can do the role really good, she can present herself as athletic and strong, she has gymnastic experience, or something to that effect, I can get behind her.
If they cast her because she looks pretty, this movie is going to flop.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.She's been in quite a few things lately. A Royal Affair did for her what Girl with the Dragon Tattoo did for Noomi Rapace a few years back, then Ex Machina dropped last year which promptly turned her into a Hollywood name, and when she won an Oscar for The Danish Girl a few months ago her status was pretty much sealed. She's headlining the next Jason Bourne flick that's out in a few weeks and she's got movies coming up that are starring all sorts of famous names.
I haven't seen her in anything personally yet but her acting capabilities seems to be fairly well received, at least.
Ooh, Oscar-winner. That's a good sign.

By most accounts, it's going to be something in the vein of the Tomb Raider video game reboot, Tomb Raider (2013).
She was also in the Man From U.N.C.L.E film, which is how I knew her first.
"If I reach for the stars, you can't hold me back"Dropping in to say that Roar Uthaug is the most metal name I've ever heard.
On the topic of the film, topping the old ones shouldn't be too difficult. Setting itself apart from the old ones should be easy, as from what I understand the new Tomb Raider games are quite a bit different from the old ones, with a more survival based feel to them, compared to the old games having an exploration feel.
Cortex should take a 12-step plan off a 10-step pierI'm sure it will be better than the other OTHER Tomb Raider movie, sort of.
Alicia is great (she was actually my #2 option). So I cannot really complain about her getting the job.
And as amusingly "poetic" as it would have been to see Daisy Ridley kind of following Harrison Ford's path to stardom, and I think that she'd have been a great choice to play Lara Croft, it's not like she's lacking for other offers. She's got at least two other films that she's currently attached to outside of SW after all. So she's in a fine position right now.
Also they've confirmed that this film is based off of the 2013 "reboot" Lara Croft game. So no, it isn't a prequel to the Jolie films.

You know, here's something I've wondered about this series.
Isn't this movie (and the series) basically about graverobbery?
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. That's kind of an inherent issue with these type of film. Indiana Jones and The Mummy have it as well.
Well, it it literally called "Tomb Raider"...
Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.I am oddly optimistic about this. It's a reboot of the series that has the single most successful video game adaptation of all time, it's aping 2013's Tomb Raider reboot which pretty much everyone days was decent even (especially) if they were utterly uninterested in the TR franchise.
I honestly think this could do really well.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That's about the boat I'm in too. I won't be surprised if it turns out to be terrible, but I have hopes for it.
I've played the 2013 reboot and its follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and they are a fantastic reinvention of the character that went a long way towards salvaging her character from the one-dimensional sex object she's been in the public eye since...well, her conception, really. These games made her into a respectable protagonist and if the film's going to follow suit, then it's got a pretty fair chance at success.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Well that's basically what the director said that his viewpoint on it was as well. So, good start there. And casting an actress like Vikander (and Ridley would have fit this as well), also a good start.
The grave robbing thing is kind of an awkward topic in some Archaeology communities. I have many friends who study Archaeology and Anthropology and such topics and they'll be very enthusiastic about the entire field but INSTANTLY clam up and get very awkward if you bring up grave robbing.
Does form an interesting question though as to how many years must pass for the line to be crossed from grave robbing to archaeology.
I think the civilization has to end. No precise time frame.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.My anthropology professor in college had this amusing habit of bringing up how much the Indiana Jones movies inspired him to get into his particular field of study, while also poking fun about how they get basically nothing right about how actual archeology works.
Alicia Vikander has been cast as
everythingLara Croft, and it's set to be directed by Roar Uthaug, whose main claim to fame is The Wave and those Cold Prey things, if you're into obscure (and fairly pedestrian) horror. I think I'm going to ground my expectations somewhat but I'm open to be surprised.
