Also Secret Life of Pets being a shameless ripoff of Toy Story, and Sing being a shameless ripoff of Zootopia.

What on earth makes you think that the movie it will rip off has to be the live action Mario movie, and couldnt be any other kids movie?
Also, Minions would need to have a plot in order for that plot to be a ripoff.

Case in point, I forget most of the dialog from Minions, yet I can still quote "STIR WHIP STIR WHIP WHIP WHIP STIR!".
Okay, but can you remember anything else in Minions?
It might be way too early to tell, but if Detective Pikachu's financial performance continues to be as strong as it is now, what's the likelihood that Nintendo will end up reneging on its partnership with Illumination and look elsewhere to do their animated Super Mario movie?
(Probably unlikely, but it seemed to be worth asking all the same.)
Saw it. Was really enjoyable, and the plot was actually pretty interesting, with some neat red herrings and surprise Ditto!
The whole bad guy plot and final action sequence really leaned into anime-style absurdity. It could have been (and probably was) a plot from the Pokemon anime, and it really worked. The sequence with the giant Torterras and the Bulbasaurs leading Tim to Mewtwo was also beautifully done and also felt like straight up anime.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectAm I seriously the only one who saw the plot of this thing coming? Hell, the premise of the game itself told me exactly what the twist was when I heard about it.

after the debacle that was The Cat in the Hat, the estate of Dr. Seuss was adamant about not letting their IPS be made into live movies. They worked with Illumination on those movies. And yet, Illumination still made absolute garbage.
Nintendo wants a lot of money out of this, and nothing more - quality is not a priority. If they wanted an actually good movie, they would have approached Laika, or Aardman, hell, nearly any other studio. However, they chose the studio whose movies make big money, in spite of low quality.
I wouldn't say absolute garbage. The Grinch was a decent enough film flick. And Mario is not exactly something that needs to be done correctly compare to say, The Legend of Zelda or even Pokémon. You just look at the cutscenes made over the past decade to get an idea of what a Mario movie would be like.
@qwigly: Funny that you mention Zootopia. The storyline with the R drug made me think of that movie.
Come on! Let's bless them all until we get fershnickered! There were a few misleading shots in the trailers now that I think about it, both involving headwear.
The scene that opens the second trailer, of Pikachu walking towards the bridge, is framed as an origin flashback/explanation of where he came from, while in the actual movie it's a scene just before the climax where Pikachu realizes what actually happened during the car crash and who the villain actually is. He's not even wearing the hat in the full scene. Mewtwo's appearance in the second trailer also omits the psionic link headset that Bill Nighy's character is using to control Mewtwo.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThere was also Charizard about to eat Pikachu shot that never happened in the actual movie. It was just Pikachu falling down while Charizard is being held down by Tim. That also means we'll have to change the trailer image on the Nightmare Fuel page to actual movie.

Just came back, loved it. Yeah the plot was predictable, but it was so much fun it's hard to really hold that against it. About the final twist, I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I saw it coming miles away, so that was annoying. On the other hand, it forces the film to be mostly standalone, which is both good and bad. I would have liked a direct sequel with the same cast and Detective Pikachu, but this exact premise could have very easily become a Franchise Zombie, so I can't blame them for tying it up quickly. If they do gear up for a Pokemon cinematic universe, they could easily have these characters mentioned in other films. Lucy, as a reporter, could easily cameo.
Also, I've seen some negative reviews for the film, and they are all so stupid. Most of them ignore the actual problems with the movie and just complain that it's a Pokemon movie.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff. There are quite a few things that where different in the trailers. Like the moment Pikachu slams into Mr Mime's barrier. The trailer gives Mr Mime a completely different expression of surprise and then smugness that I think works better.
I think the scene where Charizard is about to chomp on Pikachu does happen but it's obscured by smoke and lighting.
I swear they have the most random dislikes.

That's really concerning. The movie has some really big problems, I think, but it realizes Pokemon in live action beautifully.

He's a Japanese trainer, that's for sure. But Red? I doubt it. He looks more like a Pokémon Go player than Red. Red has a distinct outfit be it from Pokémon Red and Blue or FireRed and LeafGreen.
Oh come on, let's not pretend that Red is this uber Memetic Badass that only lives in the cold mountains. It's an outdated meme and let's be honest, you'll be a far better Pokémon Master if you travel across the land, searching far and wide for new Pokémon and teach them the power that it's inside.

I believe they're referring to how Illumination approached The Lorax and The Grinch.
EDIT: Whoops, awkward page-topper
