Same. I've never gotten so hyped for a video game film adaptation before, or been so sure that it's going to be good.
With most game adaptations my default expectation is that it's going to be bad, but I might be surprised. With Detective Pikachu it's the exact opposite. I might be setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm actually expecting it to be good, and it feels nice to actually have confidence in a video game movie based on what the advertising has shown us so far.
It’s weird, but I’ve sort of got like... denial hype? Like, my brain is screaming that there’s no way this movie can wind up being good, and I’m fully prepared for it to suck, but all the positive word of mouth and fan hype has got this little corner of my mind waiting to explode if (probably when at this point) it turns out to be awesome.
> denial hype
Same,I'm fully expecting it to bomb but I'm happy to be wrong sometimes
New theme music also a boxIt would probably only underperform relative to the Avengers juggernaut, but it will do very well financially I think. Critical reception is less certain but there are many indications that it will probably do well there too.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectPokemon movies have never done well with the critics. Pokémon: The Power of Us is the highest rated film on Rotten Tomatoes and it barely qualifies as Fresh, having only a 60%.
Of course, we shouldn't depend solely on critic ratings to decide whether a film is good or not. But this does give Detective Pikachu a lot of room to be declared the best film in the franchise.
It's also true that Pokemon movies themselves aren't great, Detective Pikachu doesn't have a high bar to clear to be the best. Also, Japanese anime movies are treated differently by critics than Hollywood live-action films are, they might be nicer to it than the other Pokemon movies.
That last point could be considered a little unfair, but it's understandable, as anime films releasing in theaters is still a relatively uncommon thing in the west, and many may not be familiar with the common tropes used in anime.
Of course, Miyazaki/Ghibli films usually go over well with critics, so maybe it's the difference between 'artsy film' and 'mass market schlock', even with anime.
We'll see how a more 'western' aesthetic and a big name star affect opinions.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectSo I gotta ask, if this film based on some pre-existing Pokemon manga, or is it an original idea altogether.
If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.Thanks. Never heard of that particular Pokemon game before. I thought the film concept seemed somewhat random.

New theme music also a boxIt has the premise and quite a few of the major story beats at least.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectGod, this movie makes me want a predominantly urban Pokémon game so bad. I guess Unova counts, but...
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Apparently the film just had a showing in Tokyo, Japan (Apparently people got invited by Warner Brothers). Reactions have already started popping up everywhere on Twitter this past hour. The movie's official twitter page has just started retweeting reactions from people who attended it. It's getting a lot of positive reception.
"A Lady does not start fights but they can finish them"An article on yesturday's screening. Apparently Spanish viewers are really loving the movie.

"A Lady does not start fights but they can finish them"It's really looking like this could be the one truly good video game movie! It's getting really hard to not get excited!
Is it weird that I'm looking forward to this movie more than I am Avengers: Endgame, which I'm seeing this weekend?
I'm not even a particularly big Pokémon fan.
This premise could have been a souless cash grab, but it looks they actually put heart into this.
Exactly.
I dunno about 'heart' exactly, but they got a funny guy to voice Pikachu and it's life action film with pokemon
New theme music also a boxI can see some heart, due to the fact they are not only sticking with the Gen 1 Pokemon that mainstream audience are more familiar with.
A part of me hopes they invited Veronica Taylor back for a cameo voice-over
Or did she kibosh that on social media?
We don't know, but it would be fun if she did a cameo voice.
Is she a SAG actor? If not then she probably can't.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
The marketing for this movie has been so amazing and "What a Pikachu World" actually made me tear up. I've never been this optimistic over a live-action Video Game Movie before.
