The Harekaze being original was weird with everything else being an IJN reference
I suspect things will turn out not to be as dire as they seem at the end of the episode— They'd have gone with something more major if this was going to be truly life-or-death, and the OP is pretty cheery

...Well, this is an interesting way to kick things off. Maybe it's part of their training regimen. You know, in case they fight actual traitors! Ha! Haha!

Mashiro's luck really is in the pits. The Anne-Happy world would surely welcome her.
Mike needs a coat to go with the captain's hat. In time, she'll exude an aura that's as badass as Captain Marika!

While this won't be an ultra-grim pit of despair, seeing how they were joking during the battle, this does look like it will be a touch darker than the no danger sportsy Girls und Panzer. At least I hope so. We'll see though. I do wonder if they'll actually take advantage of the setting, or if it's just an excuse to make this premise plausible.
On a completely unrelated note,.. Are the Yamato sisters (and other 'old' ships) lifted & restored originals or modern-built copies?
Also, am I the only one whom the paint job on the WWI-ships makes think of "Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio"?
Also, Error Musume, the Anime
◊.
It's interesting to note that they have a lot of Girls Und Panzer alumni on the production staff, but the most important name here is Suzuki Takaaki, who was military advisor/supervisor/world setting/episode scriptwriter for Strike Witches, Girls und Panzer and Gate.
And one more thing to chew on. According to the usual military enthusiasts, a PRIMED 93 cm Long Lance would have blown the Independence-class to smithereens, yet an UNPRIMED dud wouldn't have made it list so much as in this episode... which could point that it was all a set-up.

Did Misaki, like, just use Yuudachi's Verbal Tic? The line in question
Also, the Harekaze's secretary... Was that Mikako Takahashi? (a.k.a.: Yuzuko Koyama from Girls und Panzer.)
"Learn as if you will live forever, live as if you will die tomorrow."That's how 'poi' is normally used, so not really
Oh hey, Myssa's watching this too.
I have to say the anime was making me go "wat" a helluva lot more than girls und panzer lol.
High school class crewing a DD: "Wat."
Noob getting captain slot: "Wat."
No adult supervision: "Wat."
Independence with 127mm gun instead of Bofors 57mm? "Wat."
Engineering division wear competition swimsuits instead of underwear: "Wat."
But still it's pretty wat in a good way. :p Is there a TV tropes page up? If not I might just make it like I made the Gu P page lol.
Also leaving the VERY misleading image for the page until we get something more appropriate along the line. :P

I think "Hai Furi" is actually the official name? The page should probably be at Anime.Hai Furi
Even the official website
calls it High School Fleet now. Hai-Furi is just the abbreviation, much like Garupan is for Girls und Panzer.
The official streams use Haifuri [1]
.
Probably should use that or strike a middle ground with the current thread title.

@Engineering swimsuit: This is just theory, but my best bet is that it was some kind of compromise. See, anybody familiar with how seamen depicted in WW 2 (and pretty much in every war movie) are knows that engineering crews are good for two things: Look fabulous when doing their work, shirtless, and getting wet when things get hairy. And ship interior, especially older ones, can be compared with sauna, especially in tropical area.
Problem is, while engineering guys has, traditionally, no problem going shirtless, engineering ladies, in the other hand....
And even if ladies can be accepted socially to shown in undies on sea, little ladies, in the other hand, might get a flak. Solution: Gave them something less Fanservice-y.
Besides, most competitive swimwear today
has features
that can justify its' application in seamen (and women) today.

@R Bomber: yeah but the swimsuits they're wearing are the high school competition high leg swimsuits, not the legged and armed swimming suits used in the olympics.
On the other hand, I didn't say I didn't like it. :p ^_^;;
This is the part that I wish we had more ship geeks on the board, compared to the tank geeks we had during Girls Und Panzer.
Because honestly I'm struggling with how to even describe the Harekaze (Kagerou-class hull, yet with automation to allow it to be operated by 30 girls, and it even has modern radar) or the Sarushima (which while being built on an Independence-class hull, I was told that the 57mm Bofors it had in the first episode is NOT its standard equipment).
Never mind how the Musashi still apparently has its pre-Leyte Gulf configuration, as evidenced by the 15.5cm guns on its wings.

Well, let's get this out of the way. Original anime with designs from Atto (mangaka of Non Non Biyori) about a world where the ocean levels have risen enough that Japanese cities are mostly underwater, and the population has moved on to live on gigantic city-ships. Pretty much what we had in Girls Und Panzer taken to the next level.
So, this first episode. HOLY FSK, I don't think anyone expected what happened in the second half. Mutiny! USE OF LIVE AMMO AGAINST MINORS... And a cameo of a Kagerou-class destroyer, LOL (it's an imaginary ship, the Harekaze, but I've been told it looks SUSPICIOUSLY like the Amatsukaze or even Shimakaze).
So yeah, not exactly a relaxing cute girls romp, especially since one character nearly got her head shot off there.
