As far as I can tell that's only some of the boss fights (Perhaps the chapter ones). One of the boss fights is that dragon turtle thing, which is decidedly not a household object.

It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midEach special attack having a limited number of uses before breaking and needing to be that different... that's just a way of limiting you from performing special attacks every turn, like flower points.
I haven't played Sticker Star or Color Splash but I've heard that the most annoying part of the consumable attacks is navigating through giant unsorted inventories every turn. And that doesn't seem to be a thing anymore.
That was a part of it. The other bit (if you don't include Color Splash increasing your paint levels, which was dubious at best) was that fighting was mostly pointless since it just makes you use precious items best saved in case you actually need them.
Honestly, the game overall seems to be a relative improvement over the past two games. Some of features feel like half steps to trying to appease the audience though, so I'm wondering if the devs are trying to make something off of a stringent series of guidelines they had to follow.

Sticker Star definitely did. I didn't play Color Splash, so I can't say for that one.
That "dragon turtle" would be the new companion by the way...
Also Bowser.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I'd like to point out there definitely is a way of doing it without xp. In Okami, battles only got you money, not xp, but money was often the way to get upgrades(new weapons, things to upgrade your weapons, battle techniques). If they pace how you get the money correctly I could see it working.

EDIT: Out of everything the second trailer showed us these

The Protomen enhanced my life. She was inside Bowser attacking constantly.

So my original idea that the Partners were more like Special Attacks in Combat and mostly shined out of Combat seems to be correct. I'm not sure I'm a fan of Weapons being breakable, but as long as it's not like the Card Gimmick in Color Splash and Sticker Star, it might not be so bad.
EDIT: Watching the second video, it seems like only certain Items break, while you will (almost certainly) always have your base Hammer and Boots (plus the simple upgrades) from what I see. This is way more acceptable to me.
