There's some weird values dissonance with the mob in TTYD since Japan has more friendly neighborhood gangsters than U.S.

Granted, you still don't cross them but they can be helpful.

Yyyyyyyyeah, I suggest you learn a bit more about what the Yakuza are and what they do. They have better PR because of how much of the entertainment industry they run, but they are still remarkably shitty people.

Since Paper Mario was made by the same people that did Fire Emblem, they could make the next Paper Mario a Mario version of Fire Emblem.

A Paper Mario version of Fire Emblem? Would Nintendo allow that? Especially with what Tanabe told us about the direction that they are taking the series post Sticker Star.

We already have Mario + Rabbids Kingdom battle to fill that niche. Course I guess Paper Mario could do there own take on it...

Rabbids Kingdom is less Fire Emblem and More X-Com. Truth be told, I'd love if they added the base building and research mechanics from X-Com into future titles.

Graph of sales for each game in the franchise.

I feel really sorry for Color Splash, but Origami King nearly beating Super in sales despite not even being out for a year makes me laugh

I ain't knocking it! I just think all the other games having a slow burn growth while OK's sales just go NYOOM is funny.

I do not hate Origami King but I will admit that I prefer the older games. I did read about how some fans on Game FA Qs do not like how dark and serious compared to the more lighthearted Mario games. I found it really confusing as the game really isn't all that dark and serious as it is still more lighthearted than Super and Thousand Year Door.

It's on par with TTYD in terms of darkness. There's attempted toad genocide, a partner death, really creepy imagery. I'd say it's earned it's rep as one of the darkest Paper Mario games.

[up] It looks like you are right about that. Origami is dark but it isn't what is the word I am looking for....bitter? I need help here.

[up] Serious? XD; Origami King had dark moments but a lot of them were paper-themed or paired with a joke to provide levity.

People actually die though. Bobby the Bomb Omb still makes me sad. As well as the Origami siblings.

[up] Yeah... All the fakeouts in previous Paper Mario games (TEC, Grodus, Luvbi, Kersti, Huey) made those hit harder for sure.

Paper Luigi: The Marvelous Compass when?

How is Origami King? My main off put is the circle battlefield for bosses.

I enjoyed it overall but the battle system was a definite minus for me. The story, graphics, and locations were amazing, though!

Indeed, the goal of build a path to the boss in the middle with a time limit looks stressful.

I didn't love the ring battle system, but I didn't hate it. There were definitely parts I liked about it, although I felt like it could've stood to have more variation in attacks and work for your win than it had.

Honestly, I'd rather Color Splash get ported to Switch (since I don't have a Wii U). The koopalings turning gray representing their health bugged me at first, but after seeing Origami King's battles, I take it back.

That's how all the enemies work, as you're literally smacking the color out of them.

I enjoyed the story and overworld stuff in Origami King more than I did the battle system, to be honest, but I didn't flat-out hate it.

Then again, I never played Color Splash (or Sticker Star for that matter), so I didn't have that to compare it to.

The regular Ring Battle system I'm not that huge on, they try to make it more complex as it goes on but it really depends if you enjoy sliding puzzles, which understandably is a put off for some people. It's not bad though, just kinda there. Functionally you can tell the game to solve the battle for you, and you don't lose much doing so.

Boss Battles though, were a lot more enjoyable for me. It's a lot more interesting having to navigate to the boss than it is sorting the enemies to a good attack position, and the gimmicks of them are a lot more interesting. It might feel stressful, but it's a lot more engaging.

Though personally, I've never really cared about battling in regards to the series anyway, it's always been music, story and setting, which Origami King does a really good job with, imo.

You know Scott the Woz has made a perfectly good point when he covered Sticker Star in the most recent video. Why have a battle system at all when you don’t want to make the game an RPG?
