I see the value in worldbuilding, and I'm sure most of us who prefer the older model of Mario RPGs do, but I don't think Nintendo sees enough value in worldbuilding to go out of their way for it. Their approach to Mario is gameplay first, presentation second, functional story third, nonessential worldbuilding only when it's not too much of a hassle.
Well the problem is not only the character limitations, the story limitation is also readily apparent for the last 3 games. As Arlo put it, "they are literally bumling their heads against this limitation ". It affects the world, the story, and therefore the games quality when they have to stay inside such restrictive guidelines. I LOVED origami king but i can also agree that the story takes a backseat most the time except for key point in the adventure and a mad dash towards the end.
For a paper mario game, I feel the story was the second best in the entire franchise. Thousand Year Door had a servicable story, and Super Paper Mario's story was heartfelt and raw, but Origami King's story was also heartfelt and raw at times, and it was better than TTYD. All the other paper mario games have either bog standard stories or none to really speak of.

The Protomen enhanced my life.Honestly It's pretty clear the mandate is slowly (and I should emphasis slowly) turning around in regards to Paper Mario. Origami King is better than Sticker Star in diversifying characters in every way, which is apparently where it started. Whether or not it completely goes away is unknown, but it takes time to reverse a company's direction in general.
I just wanted to pop up and bring in this beta Wiggler sprite
, because he totally looks like a Paper Mario 64 style partner, especially with the dunce cap.
Found this great remix of the Red Streamer Battle theme that arranges it in the style of TTYD
Now where's my hammer to fix them? XD
EDIT: Origami King has a unique Toad design
for the telescope gag!

The Protomen enhanced my life.I haven't even played Origami King but this Toad
sprite is making me lose my shit
so I've been seeing opinions on Origami King range from it being better than Color Splash to Color Splash being better. Would that be considered a Contested Sequel, or just a case of Broken Base?
edit: I personally think that Origami King is the better game of the two. While I did end up enjoying Color Splash, the beginning feeling so similar to Sticker Star caused me to drop it for a while, I only gave it another shot this year and found that it's actually a really good game. Whereas I liked what Origami King was going for from the get-go once I played it.

At any rate, putting Broken Base under a work's YMMV tab this soon is against the rules. You have to wait six months first.
I believe Contested Sequel is under similar time constraints too, actually.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Yeah, people like jumping the gun on opinions, tropers had to delete early contested sequels and they changed it now it sucks on the YMMV.
I personally think it's a worthy follow up to Super Paper Mario and approaches the level of 64 and TTYD but it still has room for improvement.

To answer the worldbuilding question I give this video:
It is true that super mario runs on Negative Continuity and as such the spin-off games add soft worldbuilding. If you don't have time to watch the video, hard worldbuilding tells you how the world works, whereas soft worldbuilding invites a sense of mystery and wonder (One isn't inherently better than the other). I feel the varied toad designs added to the soft worldbuilding feel.
