Alphadream went defunct during TOK's development, but I wonder if there's even a market for Mario RPG titles anymore.

There's a lot of nostalgia for TTYD at the very least.

The legend has returned.

I mean, Mario is a pretty big brand. If they make a decent one I'm sure there's profit to be made. It's not like the Mario RPG's were doing poorly before Sticker Star.

There is definitely a market for Mario RPGs. They could probably remaster TTYD with little effort and make a shitton of money.

With Nintendo's strict character guidelines, though? The appeal of the RPG series was in how it subverted and played with the formula. Who wants to play a Mario RPG where your partners are just Toad, Boo, and Koopa Troopa?

I do like how you can see in Origami King, the dev team is working around the strict character guidelines.

Bobby is a lot more likeable and memorable than any Pixl named Tippi.

Boomer was memorable cause of his hilarious quiz, and Carrie was a Game-Breaker. I don't remember the others besides Tippi and Tiptron.

As far as Tippi goes she shows the most personality in the 'You seriously don't want to breathe.' stuff if Mario is Too Dumb to Live about being in space XD

[up]x5 All I know is they were allowed to remake bowsers inside story and superstar saga with their unique characters and twists on mario enemies.

[up] Not all of them, though—Psycho Kamek was replaced with Dr. Toadley and unique-looking Toads became more generic, while the different-looking Boomerang Brothers became a subspecies called Beanerang Bros.

And yet there was a big fuss about how the Superstar Saga remake in particular made several of the Beanish enemy variants look more "generic" (such as Troopeas being bipedal rather than quadrupedal) and even replaced a couple of enemies entirely. Also, the Toads of Little Fungitown, who had varied and unique designs, were all turned into Standard Toad.

@ Crossover Enthusiast. Yeah that's what i meant. Whoops.

But Bobby is near Tippi's lvl IMO.

Tippi just has more screen time.

I mean we still have toothy, we still have that giant goomba with lollilop, we still have the limbo bro, the clumph, we still have beehoss, choomba. I feel like we're cherrypicking some examples now...

Hypothetically since Super Mario RPG used all new characters like Geno and the Smithy Gang with the Mario cast on-model, I wonder if a remake/sequel would avoid those regulations.

Do you think a Paper Mario game that had pre-existing but largely forgotten characters as partners could have potential?

Like the partner line up consisted of

  • Snide from Donkey Kong 64

  • Midbus from Bowser’s Inside Story

  • Merelda from Wario Land Shake It!

  • Spooky Speedster from Super Mario Galaxy

  • Katsini from Wario’s Woods

  • Blizzarus from Super Princess Peach.

I'm still sad we never got a Crayzee Dayzee partner like Luigi had in TTYD.

For more obscure guys how about Tatanga or Foreman Spike?

I'm still mad we didn't get Paper Luigi & The Marvelous Compass.

Even if it turns out the final boss was King Goomba.

[up] If remastering is too much for nintendo, then merely re-release the game.

Like Wind Waker really didn't need a Wii U remaster IMO, it looks fine as is.

TTYD's art style has aged quite well.

If they remastered it, they would most likely put that annoying paper white outline.

Calling back to the topic of Origami King being outsold by Bug Fables. When I asked about how the Paper Mario team would react to Bug Fables outselling Origami King in the comment section of a Youtube video. Someone replied with the idea that the Bug Fables devs would get sued. Something that would obviously not only be laughed out of court, but would possibly damage the relationship Nintendo would have with independent developers because doing that stunt would come off as them being bitter their own game was outsold by and indie game that would be considered by many to be the antithesis of modern Paper Mario.

I think it was this video

Doing pretty well, so that hypothetical is pretty moot now.

Not sure what's the point of "calling back to it", At this stage we know it didn't happen.
