[up]Personally, this is one of those rare occasions where I watch a show and genuinely love all of the main characters.

Also, yeah, I feel sorry for Vanessa Morgan. She has to play such a divisive character.Speaking of which, am I the only one who thinks Toni has something to do with the Black Hood? It just makes so much sense: she doesn't like the North, she has a fascination with serial killers, she has a motive to break up Bughead and help the Hood torture Betty, she obviously did her research on the group considering she knew Jughead despite never meeting him (and yes, I know it's also because she's a serpent), and she knows Betty and Jughead well enough to get information out of them. Granted, I don't think she is the Black Hood but I would be surprised if she didn't have something to do with him.

I would say my personal rankings of those five characters as of the latest episode would be something like: Cheryl > Betty > Archie=Veronica>Jughead.

I didn't really like Cheryl at the start of the show, but she's so delightfully fun in the majority of her scenes that I look forward to seeing her.

[up][up] I really like the idea that the Black Hood isn't working solo. I don't know it's just so deliciously Scream that I love it. I'm also one of those people who wants Nev Campbell to be Jughead's mom too. [lol]

I have no fucking idea who the Black Hood actually is. My best guess is Betty's brother...who shockingly I went to high school with. That'll be weird. I wonder if he'll sound like a hillbilly or his male modeling has smoothed out his accent. I also thought it might be Polly for a moment, but then realized being a pregnant serial killer would be a dead give away. [lol]

[up] I don't really care, but posting zero context links is against the rules.

Also, I love the little joke with FP's prisoner number.

The saddest, most awful thing about Nick St. Clair is that he's such a one-dimensional, zero redeeming qualities asshat and yet he is all too realistic at the same time. Him getting Cheryl's name wrong is just too perfectly crappy.

I love that Reggie actually feels like he's part of the gang now.

And wow Archie was proven right incredibly quickly with that race scene.

I missed the part with FP's prisoner number? What was it?

I kinda got a shippy vibe from Reggie and Josie arguing. tongue

His number was 24601 which is a shout out to Las Mieserables, in which the main character was a prisoner with the same number.

And there was definitely some Reggie/Josie vibes happening too.

I loved that ending too-not only did the identity of the Sugar Man make sense yet feel like a surprise, but Betty standing up to the Black Hood was awesome.

Oh I'm totally down for a Josie/Reggie pairing, even though I doubt it would last. Two Awesome Egos together probably won't mix well.

This may be irrelevant to some but I gotta say that for all of the grief I give this show for being tone-deaf at times, I love the episodes like these where you really get to see how diverse it actually is. As someone who loves a good well-written teen drama, Riverdale has to be the most diverse one I have ever seen (save for 13 Reasons Why).

Okay, the Sugarman thing really threw me off guard. I love what they did there. I was so, so, sure sure it was going to be Pop. How wrong I was.

Why is Cheryl stalking Josie?

I actually like how they reintroduced Chuck and are bringing him more in line with his comics counterpart. I just hope it sticks.

That's a thing.

Honestly it seems pretty in character, all things considered.

I just hope we get to see more Tony Todd at some point.

I'm a little late but I really liked this episode. There were quite a bit of pop culture references in this one. So a few things:

  • The Archie and Jughead stuff was my favorite storyline. Archie is such a great guy. No seriously, I actually want a friend like Archie Andrews. It's easy to why he's the most popular kid in school. Poor Jughead, though. You couldn't think to visit your Dad first before you trusted Penny Peabody? Really, dude?

  • I like that Josie finally got something to do. Cheryl is crazy as hell and I love her. I was confused, though. Was Cheryl Josie's stalker the entire time or did she just pull that last stunt to get Chuck away from Josie? Speaking of Chuck, yeah...I still don't like him. I don't care if he's sincerely trying to change or not, his character is far too underwritten and underdeveloped for me to care. Like why is he changing? Does he understand why his actions were disgusting? What exactly has he done that merits me to feel sympathy for him? Just...ugh. At least I don't have to complain about tone-deafness this time.

  • Betty, Betty, Betty. You're starting to irk me, dear. The accusatory attitude (while in-character) and the selfishness of getting people to do your dirty work for you was really getting under my skin. It's kind of reminding me of Laurel (from How To Get Away Murder, not Arrow), a character that I personally cannot stand. Please don't become the Laurel of this show, Betty. I love you too much. Also, Sheriff Keller is body goals and I'm so jealous.

Sheriff Keller was killing it. Heh. [lol] I agree that Betty was being super selfish, but I was very amused by the fact that her and Veronica were sort of both being snoopy, nosey shits. They both care about Kevin, yeah, but it also seemed like they were foremost interested in confirming the narrative in their heads.

I kind of dig that Josie got something to do, and it's perfectly in character for Cheryl to be a Yandere. At the same time it sort of sucks out of the two queer ladies we got one who is the very stereotype of the crazy lesbian that's meant to scare straight girls. Chuck...I have mixed feelings. He was really bad. Like a full blown predator, but I had to admit to myself he didn't really rape or assault anyone. He just did all of the other awful shit you can do. So I guess there's room for change? I do want for his character to be rehabilitated, because there were terrible implications before. At the same time the rehabilitation needs to be developed. They missed a chance to show a guy going from being an awful abuser to becoming "woke."

I have nothing to say about Archie/Jughead really, because it was just really good. It was creepy, surreal in a really Twin Peaks sort of way (what's with the ambiguously European foreign drug dealer what the actual fuck?), and effectively established working with Penny as a real Deal with the Devil.

I came here immediately to scream about the Cheryl thing

On the one hand I am living for the show's unpredictability

On the other hand I was so happy she finally had a stable friendship and I was goddamn rooting for a nice romantic subplot: THIS IS THE WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOME

-edit- Okay, after a hot minute of analysis here is my List of Possible Cheryl Motivations:

1. Cheryl is a straight up yandere, in love with Josie because she saved her, is cute, talented, etc. Is using blackmail to keep them together. The most obvious answer.

2. Cheryl is playing 4D chess and blackmailing Josie is just part of her Evil and Dramatic Plan to do...something. Support the black hood maybe? Cheryl literally being the Black Hood seems too obvious, but the evil side eye she's been giving the whole show is definitely building up to something.

Either way, my ship is thoroughly sunk.

If this was how Toni acted towards girls she had a crush on, it's be terribad writing.

But for Cheryl, the most extra person on the show, whose healthiest romantic relationship was that one time she made out with Moose at Jughead's party, it fits like an exceptionally dramatic glove.

Did anyone else notice how they emphasised the janitor at Riverdale High? I think he might be the Black Hood, or at least sympathetic to him.

That's possible, but I just figured it was a double blind thing, where the audience was supposed to think he and not Chuck was the stalker.

Yeah that’s how I took it, that we were meant to think that he’s the stalker.

OK, skipping through the spoilers - how easy is this show for a new viewer such as myself to avoid Continuity Lock-Out (I've only really seen The New Archies via You Tube etc. and some of Archie's Weird Mysteries (think it was about Archie being invisible, a la Hollow Man).

I normally watch Police Procedural shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy or Historical Drama but will this hopefully be not like The Vampire Diaries where (for me at least) it got the point I couldn't carry on with it after a few seasons? (I think probably due to Seasonal Rot; gave up after Season 3).

Yeah, knowledge of the Archie comics really doesn't hinder, enjoying the show.

In other news, the Sabrina spin-off is still going forward, but its apparently going to be on Netflix and not the CW. Which makes plenty of sense, because I think outside of the US, Riverdale is shown and billed as a Netflix exclusive anyway.

Dove Cameron would be my dream casting (or the younger Peyton List), but honestly the showrunners are probably gonna go with a more or less unknown.

If anything, I think you'd be more bamboozled if you HAD read Archie. Beyond the character names, Riverdale is its own beast.

Well having read the comics as a kid makes the show a little more fun and interesting, I'm always curious how they'll play with the archetypes, and do a twisted spin on it. But because the show is such a subversion of the comics, no you don't really need to know them that well. I do wonder if people who are unfamiliar with the comics though are as quickly engaged. I was pretty much hooked from the moment I heard the premise which is pretty wild and downright silly sometimes, but the show seems pretty aware that it's silly.
