A troubling sign indeed,I've only read the first book so I'm wondering why they didn't go with 'Gunslinger' unless what I've heard is true and they are trying to cram a lot of the books into one film, which has always proven to be disastrous.

[up] It's supposed to be a sequel to the books.

"Sequel to the books" is a bit deceiving. Properly, a sequel to the books would be the books again but with a few changes sprinkled here and there. Its a loop. So non-spoiler talk, think of it as an adaptation that has plot reasons for taking liberties with the source material.

Just saw the movie. As a non-fan who's only read the first book, I thought it was pretty good. I've no real complaints, to be honest.

King himself has said that he considers The Dark Tower to be a first draft and wanted to edit them, especially the author insert stuff in the later portions.

But when he realized that would be unfeasible, he left it, though Gunslinger has been changed several times, i know the copy i have is not the exact same as the one i originally read.

And yes, this movie is not a strict adaptation to begin with. Ka is a wheel.

I knew Gunslinger had been edited when my long time Steven King fan friend didn't know Marten and Walter were the same person. I read the book way after him, so I knew something was up.

The Dark Tower is so astoundingly awful that when you leave the theater you’ll likely be less mad you wasted your time than flabbergasted that something like this could a) happen and b) be released as something that, theoretically, is going to launch a multi-platform franchise.

SOLD.

Even the few average reviews say McConaughey is terrible.

Critics aren't the end all and be all.

Fundamentally they're just a couple of stuffy nosed elitists who think their opinion is the one that matters, and that if they give a negative review it should be enough for the audience.

Probably be more impressed if I hadn't got the impression they changed the Gunslinger so it wouldn't be an all-white cast...

[up][up] Even if that were the case, note  what would be wrong with not wanting to have an all-white cast?

[up][up] Wow, that's insulting. Idris Elba is a great actor. Even the critics that are giving negative reviews are praising his performance.

Most reviews say Elba is wasted in the film. Junkie XL's score is good too.

But they squished 8 books into 95 minutes.

Reviews are opinions. If you want to waste your money going to see it, feel free. The Emoji Movie was the second highest grossing movie last week.

Just be warned — the movie is more After Earth than the King novels. Almost everything was cut.
