Diversity and Representation in Media

Go To

A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.

Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.

    Original OP
For discussing any racial, gender, and orientation misdoings happening across various movies and the film industry today.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

I admittedly have only seen a few episodes of Kung Fu as a kid and wasn't all that interested in it but imo, this show I feel could have the potential to be Kung Fu but better.

I was just listening to Kevin Hart's Guide To Black History on Netflix and it talked about Willian Tillman. His story really reminds me of those Die Hard copycats, except this one was real. Just think of how awesome this would make into a movie. His ship was taken over by Confederate privateers, and he would have faced slavery if he didn't take control.

Not into the online shooter/Battle Royale scene, but that sounds great. There's a lot of discussion to be had in the art industry about the relationship between the medium and accessibility (a lot of examples of Painting the Fourth Wall don't work if you depend on text-to-speech, for example), so it's nice to see a dev managing to negotiate that balance with care.

I highly doubt this movie is coming out. There have been attempts to make another Red Sonja movie before and all of them fell through.

Better for the movie not to come out than for it to come out with Singer's name on it.

The sort of sword and sorcery swashbuckling film genre hasn't been in vogue in a while, so the odds were always against it. Solomon Kane and Conan the Barbarian tried and failed not too long ago.

It's good that it won't come out with Synger's name on it, but sad in the sense of Sonja being a good possibility for a strong female-led movie.

This actually makes me mildly surprised at the lack of a Robert E. Howard cinematic universe with Sonja, Kull, Kane and Conan.

It's a pretty tired genre. But I actually can imagine a properly pulpy taking fining its audience. Remember, Pirate movies were declared dead and then Pot C happened.

I imagine there are better and less loaded properties featuring women in a position of power to prioritize adapting.

I can actually imagine Red Sonja working in the right hands...which are not Singer. The newer comics removed her rape backstory, but frankly, I don't think that you even have to do that, as Fury Road has shown you can have the element of rape in a story without making it graphic.

And if there are "better" characters out there to adapt is kind of irrelevant, because if they haven't caught the attention of Hollywood yet, it won't suddenly happen just because Red Sonja is shelved again. This isn't some sort of queue.

Even if the comics have long since removed the rape backstory that's what it's still going to be known for as long it's called Red Sonja

[up] The general audience most likely barely remembers that Red Sonia ever was a thing.

And part of me thinks that a take of it which is more, well, sensitive to the issue, this could actually be worthwhile.

Tropes aren't bad, remember. It is always about how you handle them.

while Po C bring pirates back, it didnt just bring complete it, Po C feel more like glaidator and other 2000 films than a typical pirates movie.

Conan is pulpy but also bloody, very damn bloody, to capture the spirit of conan you need something closer to Mad max in sheer ultraviolence.

Well, I am not saying that you can revive the whole genre. I am saying that the genre doesn't really matter if the movie is good.

[up]Given that the author has gotten into trouble in the past for praising Imperial Japanese war criminals, I'm not surprised.

Geez, I've never been huge on Ao T but that pretty much killed any desire I might have had to read it.

Ao T has been known to be anti-semitic for a few years now, it's just recently got reknown.

Its kinda hard to tell with Japanese artists if they are being just insensitive or bigoted sometimes tongue Like, Ao T isn't pro nazis either, but its "both sides have done atrocities" story where you can notice some real life parallels which make it really awkward

Like, it gets hard to tell since closest thing to Imperial Japan in Ao T aren't good guys either, so if author is Imperial Japan apologists, it doesn't really seem like they are completely unaware? I don't know if their real life stance has changed since the controversial statements or not though
