A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros
", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

It's essentially the principles behind Grimmification, which doesn't have the best track record.
CW Powerpuffs. Wow. Most shows don't get one hated revival and this one gets two in span of a decade.
I actually like grimmification, and even I think this is dumb. A tone along the lines of Legends of Tomorrow would suit PPG just fine, but this just feels weird.

I'm admittedly more surprised at how quickly this show was launched, got its leads, and is moving through production. I'm admittedly used to a lot of Live-Action Adaptation projects that get announced, then go silent for years only to have it revealed three or four years following the announcement that License Holder Y objected to something and the writers sat in a writing room for all those years without a single casting call or set made.
This was only confirmed for a pilot order a few months ago and they're moving through the casting and the like in fast-forward.

On the plus side, if Whose Line ever makes more tapings, the chances of Chloe Bennett guest starring just went up.
Not that there's been clamoring for Bennett to guest in Whose Line, I just think it'd be cool to see her on.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!Additional comment: I just remembered that Dove Cameron was on Agents of SHIELD as well, along with Chloe.
Wonder if she'll crush someone's head on this show too.

Like creepy stories? Check out my book!I mean, she's also the strongest and the leader. She's certainly not submissive which is the real troublesome trope.
And if we're going that broad, then casting her as ditzy Bubbles or "toughest fighter" Buttercup would be problematic.
Not that most people know Bennett's half-Asian anyway.
'd, but it's nice to know I'm not alone in my thinking.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Fair enough, I was thinking specifically about the Asian and Nerdy trope.

Although, as far as I remember Buttercup isn't a martial artist, she's a brawler, which is pretty much the opposite of how Asian fighters are usually depicted in Hollywood.
One possible advantage of the Adaptational Angst Upgrade is that the model minority trope could be subverted or deconstructed.
Didn’t know it was having a prequel… Hopefully the writing won’t raise a shitstorm like Season 8’s.
Some details about the Netflix series about Yasuke
(the first black Samurai) directed by LeSean Thomas. Lakeith Stanfield is voicing the title character in English and Flying Lotus is composing.

IIRC, the late Chadwick Boseman wanted to do a Yasuke movie. It's a shame we'll never see it.
Edit - Yeah, Deadline announced he had signed on in 2019
. That would have been something I would have gone to the theater to see.
I was excited about the project, until I saw Le Sean Thomas was involved. In addition to his last show, Cannon Busters, being terrible, it also has the distinct controversy of Thomas getting a pilot made via Kickstarter, only to leave all of his backers high and dry on the rewards he promised.

Re: To add on to what has already been said; if I remember right wasn't Blossom the most "proper" of the three, being both the smartest and the most polite? If so, then making her asian also feels like it's something of a stereotype.
I wasn't really aware that being polite was an Asian stereotype. I mean... We have a trope called Asian Rudeness.
I'm not saying Asian people in general aren't polite, I'm just saying I doubt people will see Chloe Bennet in this role and be like "Hey, she's acting nice and proper! Stereotype!"
Like creepy stories? Check out my book! The stereotype is Inscrutable Oriental, fwiw. It's much older than Asian Rudeness, which in part rose up because said "inscrutability" sometimes comes off as rude to Westerners.

HBO Max Launches Latinx Initiative Named HBO Max Pa’lante!

AKA, the worst kind of reboots or adaptations. The ones that act like the original material is beneath them.
