Well, it's not like Voltron's ending is complete misery, either. It just feels wrong for the characters, but there's enough positives to be bittersweet.
Also, this last interview just confirms that this show's main problems (from a production standpoint) come from disagreements between creatives and corporate. Showrunners didn't like some symbols ot upgrades, but their re-designs were shot down. Shiro was not allowed to be gay until his ex-turned-buddy-nohomo was already dead. It is a stretch, but it's also possible that these mandates over power-ups and emblems made the EPs not want to use Voltron as much, since they even wanted to quit the project midway during production.
We may never know what exactly went down, what was Dreamworks, WEP, or Dos Santos and Montgomery's doing, but production-wise, the clash of ideas and refusals to budge until last minute (that whole "bible was vague so we could slip things past corporate," for one) is most certainly the reason behind VLD's inconsistent tone and pacing.
...
So...I didn't read it, but I stand by my statement that they needed to have people who wanted to do a robot show working on it.
Among other things.
One Strip! One Strip!Yup like the Devil Survivor 2 anime where the director and writer were fans of Yamato and they turned him into a Social Darwinist who throws away his men like expendable trash.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.![]()
The last major example we got of that was SSSS.GRIDMɅN, and that worked out pretty well.
It's not just about being a fan. It's about actually wanting to do the project.
A giant robot show where you barely want to use the robot (who is the main draw) is a flawed show.
One Strip! One Strip!Well, I suppose that someone will learn from this.
I mean, while both this series and Voltron Force were incredibly flawed, I think they both had some interesting ideas (I mean, haven't we all ever wondered what would happen if someone else formed the head?).
And when this show started, I felt like there was some great potential. We just need someone to find that winning formula.

Not when the people come for the thing you push to the background.
You can’t keep a license down forever. But if they do try again, it will probably be in a decade and probably go out of its way to avoid VLD’s take on the lore, if not outright mock it. Also I fully expect to see a blonde Allura again.
There was nothing wrong with that.
But use the fucking robot too! USE IT! USE IT!!!!!
Hell, if they had USED THE FUCKING ROBOT!!! while keeping all that stuff, I think the show would have been pretty damn good...
...well maybe not that ending...although an actual final battle would have helped quite a bit I think.

I don’t think there is, at least not to the degree emphasized. They went with a certain portion and it didn’t sell, so next time they should emphasize the other aspect. I do think you need to have a clean break from how this show did things to convince people it won’t be more of the same. That means different character designs, different focuses, and de-emphasizing elements that turned off casual audiences.

Oh there are definitely a lot of imports that rode in on the Korra wave that couldn't care less about robots, and are here for high octane mixed martial arts action and the character drama between beautiful people.
You can ask a lot of people about what they would change and they would tell you very different things, because the show got popular with a lot of different sort of people and not just super robot genre fans or viewers of the old shows.

Nowhere near enough to make the show successful vs the nostalgic fans that were turned off by the de-emphasis on the elements that made the show popular to begin with. And at the end of the day, the show wasn’t successful for Dreamworks, given their history of making spinoffs and sequels to just about everything that is, with zero further plans for this franchise.
I think this is something Nickelodeon has done surprisingly well with TMNT, attracting both kids and legacy viewers while creating something that isn’t a complete retread.

Very wise of them.
