TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

The New Account sign appearing next to new usernames is a nice touch, but it's buggy (Morgenthaler, who's been around for years, is listed as new).
This is because Morgenthaler's account was recently reset. The way mod-induced account resets work, you have to re-register, so even though all your history is intact the wiki thinks that you are new.

The ad automatically scrolls the page to put itself in view, instead of leaving the scroll bar at the top of the page, or at the most recent viewed post in a thread.

[up] What he said. It'll also yank the cursor out of the text entry box, so now you're typing in the ad rather than where you put the cursor.

Well. I must admit that I like the new layout and also the new homepage as well. Although it seems that the home pages which were in different languages may need to be edited or removed...

Where does a "New Account" sign appear?

I am not going on this site as often since before the revamp because I just can't stand the slow performance from ads!

~kyun, try installing Flash Block. It cuts out the clunky, memory-intensive Flash stuff, while still letting the ad load to give the site the ad revenue.

Can someone report a focus stealing ad and put in the comment "focus-stealing"? The report feature sends us the actual code the ad is executing so I can analyze it and find a way to block them as well.

If you have a problem with flash ads newer browsers have the ability to block them from auto-starting. I believe the newest version of Chrome does this by default.

I reported an ad for being too tall for its slot once.

There's one particular video ad for vacationing in Bora Bora. It's literally only resulted in force quitting my browser. ALL THE TIME.

Someone recommended Flash Block to me.

So now I have it enabled, but I can't play Youtube videos easily because they run on swfs or HTML 5!

There is an option in Flashblock's settings to whitelist sites.

"The monospace font should be using your browser's default setting rather than forcing one. I think that was the fix that was made."

Actually, it's using a completely different font. I have my browser to use Consolas for monospace font, but the site is currently using some variant of Courier.

The exact CSS rule for it in main.css is

.monospace-font{font-family:Courier,"Courier New",monospace !important}

Did work pages have a history button before or am I just imagining that? I honestly like the new look but now I have no idea if I'm just imagining that certain features were placed where I thought they were. It's actually kind of creepy like finding your house keys somewhere your pretty sure you didn't put them.

I reported a broken Walgreens ad yesterday and also mentioned it in the advertising thread, but I haven't seen any posts in that thread so I thought I'd mention it here too.

Not really a bug, but the "mark all as read" button is gone on mobile.

Uh, they still do, don't they? What am I missing? Because I just Random-Media'd through several works pages and they all have a history button.

I didn't miss it, I just read it as implying that they used to be there and now they aren't. My bad.

This is terrible. My avatar doesn't appear at the top right, so I had NO idea how to do my profile, log out, etc, the sidebar is FAR too wide (Seriously, there is absolutely no reason for it to be that wide except to accommodate those ad banners, which is bull. DO NOT BUILD YOUR SITE LAYOUT AROUND THE ADS. PLACE ADS TO FIT YOUR SITE LAYOUT. The sidebar is about fifteen characters wider than it needs to be for ANYTHING ELSE.)

This is just a *mess*.
