TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

Adding to my previous post, it seems that activating Night Vision mode moves some things slightly. Maybe it's an illusion, but I can swear "Follow TV Tropes" and the buttons next to it are jumping to the side. Same with "Resources".

I'm gonna have to Nth the statements about the sidebar being entirely too wide now. It's almost twice the size of the old one. And that's pretty much completely unnecessary IMO.

Site seems to load weird and sometimes even lags on mobile.

Well, for me at least.

The side things that aren't the main article/thread of the page seem to take up more space than necessary as well, at least in landscape view. It just looks weird when they seem to take up nearly a third of the page.

The whiteness doesn't bug me too much; after all, the original site wasn't all that colorful, right?

Still, maybe giving a few more appearance options in the future might be helpful...

The whiteness seems kinda annoying after looking at if for a while, but maybe that's because it's so different and there's so much of it...

To my eye, it looks odd, not bad just odd. I may just be really use to the old design though.

My general feeling is a lot like what others have said. Overall, I think it's fairly sleek and stylish. However, the design is very, miserably, grey. I think the best way to describe it would be this quote from Star Wars Rebels - "It's like the Empire wants to paint over everything with its boring shades of gray, black, and white. Sabine puts the color back." We need Sabine. Put the color back!

They Changed It, Now It Sucks! seems appropriate for the update.

Seriously, the new color scheme is atrocious (what the hell is with the YMMV and WMG pages), and the sidebar is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too wide

Oh! You changed the little black TV icon on the bookmarks to a TV Tropes icon. Good. I kept going to TV Tropes when I intended to go to Find A Grave while doing genealogy - they were both similar.

The wiki Watchlists could use a quick way to tell when there's been a recent edit like the red dot, especially since not all of us live under Western Standard Time.

Where'd the title search go? Right now, I can only find it through "frequent pages" on my computer.

So, been looking around the French pages... Every accent was translated to their HTML equivalent ('é' became &_ecute, 'à' became &a_grave, and so on). That's... going to take a loooong time to fix...

Speaking of which, I suspect the Recent Change filter is... not working quite right : https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/changes.php?filter=Fr

Oh, and not being able to access alternate Home Pages from the main one is a bit of a bummer too. You know, the Home Pages in other languages, but also the fun oens like the Ninja one, the Buffy Speak one, or the Elmer Fudd one. I know they still exist, but you can't directly access the anymore.

Aside from that, it's a pretty nice design. I liek it ; really I do. It's just that it's gonna hinder the translation project quite a bit...

EDIT : I added "_" since it automatically turned them into the alternate letters, but you get my point. Though when I went to edit my post, the '&_ecute' had turned into a 'é'... Weeeeird.

Minor complaint that I can't tell if its intentional or not: when I scroll down with sticky header enabled, four of the buttons (which I find to be the ones I intend to use the most) vanish, namely, the Tropes|Media|Indexes|Forums at the left.

Having a link back to forums/watchlist etc at the bottom of a thread would be nice, its annoying to always have to scroll up.

Wow, I forgot this was happening and got surprised when I refreshed a page and got this new layout.

It looks alright to me, but I wish the sidebar could still be on the left side of the screen. Also, yeah, it's a bit drab, too.

Did they get rid of the "?action=history" thing?...

That was one thing that they shouldn't have gotten rid of...

I'm slightly annoyed that the preview button on the edit page is gone, and using the image uploader sometimes gives me the wrong image.

Night vision on this looks awful. Whenever you make a header (!text), you can barely see the white text. Also, on the new posts page (which you can't access on a forum anymore, btw), you can't see who made the last post on a forum anymore.

My complaints:

  • Too much white: A little mix of light blue in the old layout was more pleasant to the eyes.
  • The two random buttons on top are eyesores.
  • In a thread in a subforum, I can't go back to the subforum without scrolling all the way to the top.

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.

Sticky header is broken on mobile, it does nothing, which is a pain because I've accidentally clicked the random button three times now when trying to scroll up.

Other than that, I have to echo what everyone else is saying, the sidebar is too big, the colours are too bland, and IMO everything is too "round" and big, it feels "kiddy", I preferred the rectangles and lists of the old version, and I miss the blue, please add a classic mode option :<
