TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

[up][up] I don't know. Folder nesting seems painfully messy to me - far too many clicks to get to the examples you need.

I noticed another problem with the new site. The Trivia and YMMV pages use the scale icons for bullets, which are really distracting (and I assumed were only used to highlight misplaced entries on regular pages). Could this be fixed?

Drewski is going through the Buglist and setting a number of items to "Working". Look out for improvements soon.

Is the dotted line for 4-line breaks (- - - -) here to stay? It's so weird not seeing it create a full line anymore. Not to mention, the dotted line itself is very hard to see.

[up][up] Has it been reported in the bug tracker? We weren't told that it would be going away, so it is probably a bug that it doesn't work.

Test: Ew, that is horrid. Can barely see it. I'm sure it'll get repaired.

Overall the update is fine on PC. Only complaint is that the sidebar is too wide by a factor of about two.

However, I'm now completely unable to use the site on my ipad without an adblocker. The ads are too memory intensive and aggressive, and the pages repeatedly slow to a crawl or crash. I'm sure people with slower desktops are having similar problems.

[up][up]I believe I saw it in the "Working" section of the Bug Tracker. So it's on the list.

I'm not sure why but on the YKTTW page I'm not able to edit my post for some reason. Also no link to recently edited tropes? Color scheme is too white and it feels way too bright but then you use Night Vision and it looks worse.

Sorry if I didn't address this in the previous post, but is Wide Load available to non-logged in users, and, if it isn't, can you make it available?

I noticed that the red dot now appears on the Watchlist. But now, no matter what I do, the dot just won't go away. I look at the history, and click on the page title, but the dot just remains there.

Also, when in the Darth Wiki, all the links show as red. I don't know who thought it up, and I don't wish ill-will upon them, but that idea really shouldn't have went past the drawing board. Consider what a red link implies to anybody who has been on a wiki for more than an hour, and you can see why making the links in Darth Wiki red was a bad idea. At first, I thought it was getting removed.

I never did say my thoughts on the new site layout itself, just the problems it caused for me. Basically, I'll admit that it is kind of weird and it'll take a good while to get use to it. But aside from not being able to use it on my device {And in about a month I'll be getting a Nook Tablet, so I can probably go to TV Tropes on that}, I'll probably get use to the design eventually. Same thing as with what happened last year with the previous layout change.

I'm too tired to thoroughly investigate the new layout, but there is one very minor thing that nonetheless really aggravates me....

WHY is the new symbol for YMMV a gas pump, of all things?? If anything, that symbol belongs to Nightmare Fuel.

I tried out the new Image Uploader just now with three images. The first two went perfectly, but then I encountered something weird with the third one where this occurs.

[[caption-width-right:300.10341675861:(insert image)]]

I used an image that was exactly 300 width, but for some reason, the upload added the ".10341675861", which ends up placing the image in the center of the page. Deleting it brought the upload back to normal though; placing the image perfectly on the right like the first two images I added.

The color scheme is no good, and I really don't like the new look of the random buttons. Also, the right-side thing, like everyone said.

The gas pump is a reference to "your MILEAGE may vary".

Is the "edit" button gone from other peoples YKTTW replies? It makes editing entries harder when you can't copy and paste the examples.

I'm using Internet Explorer on Windows. I just tried it using Firefox instead, and for some reason with that the scrollbar stays in place. Any idea why the difference?

Okay, after giving myself time to calm down, and also look through the responses posted overnight, I feel that I have better room to talk now.

I honestly have no idea why the side bar has to be so large in order to accommodate ads. Maybe it's just because I'm not someone who knows code, but I feel it could be smaller. Banner ads aren't that wide last time I checked, and it shouldn't need to be so wide unless you're putting multiple ads at once there. And even then, the jarring amount of blank space underneath everything is an issue with or without ads. I'd like to not have the tropes themselves be squished since that's what I'm here for. But that's just my two cents.

I still think that if absolutely nothing else can be done about the design, the color scheme does need to be changed because as I said before, it's too blinding. I know night vision exists, but I shouldn't have to turn it on in the middle of the day in a brightly lit room because I feel it's blinding me. And the new colors for other pages really don't make sense. I already mentioned YMMV (and WMG from the looks of it) pages and how the yellow is very unappealing so I won't beat that dead horse. I'm not sure how I feel about the teals on Sugar Wiki and Crowning Moment pages. The pink felt better in my opinion, as it accentuated the "sugar" aspect. Nightmare Fuel and Darth Wiki pages just don't look right without the black background. It just feels bland to me. As does Tear Jerker without the blue. Of course, these are all aesthetic changes so they're more on the back-burner from what I understand.

At the end of the day, I still feel that this is all too cluttered for my liking and easily distracts me. Sticky header feels useless since scrolling down makes everything but the logo, random buttons, and search options vanish. Might want to fix that or just drop it entirely. My opinion is still negative, but I feel with at least a color scheme overhaul the site is still somewhat usable. I'm in the boat that would like a Classic Option again, but from what I understand that seems impossible. In the end though, I can say my usage of TV Tropes will definitely go down because of this.

Also, slight afterthought, the scales need to vanish on the YMMV and Trivia pages. The bullet points made more sense and it's just confusing since it's associated with something needing to be moved to those pages.

Same, masterbow (896). The font's too...frilly. Also, this is a trivial thing, but you can see where the random buttons in the header will take you when you mouse over them. I preferred it when you couldn't. Sorta like roulette. Also also, I don't like how you there's no indication of what the sliders do in the "Display options" in the sidebar, so you have to click and hope. Just my 2 cents.
