Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:
- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.
Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)
Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

~Yasmin Perry Yeesh, it's been less than a day. Don't be so dramatic, obviously the admins are taking feedback and working on changes.
I'm sure I'll get used to the new layout soon enough, but the basic colors are a bit bright for my tastes... I also miss the blue from the old layout. :/
Regarding display options, I'm disappointed that you have to be logged in to use them now. (Well, night vision, anyway.) When I'm not at home on my desktop I don't really like to logon to accounts unless it's important in case I forget to logout or leave something open.
YMMV seems to be buggy, it tells you these examples should be moved to the YMMV tab.........even while it's in there.
And it seems links are always highlighted no matter if you want it or not.
EDIT: Yeah, I'm a bit more fond of the old blue than the new grey as well.
And YMMV has gigantic capslock links on it.

Another Gamer: Did you turn on Wide Load and Lefthand Sidebar? I'm not sure why the style wouldn't be working if you followed the instructions.
Darth Walrus: The YMMV icons are a known bug. They will be fixed. And you can try Prime32's userstyle if you want the blue back. It also makes the sidebar about half as wide.
Someone else: I was also thinking of using the style as an example of what so many people want as far as aesthetics. The server move can't be a problem, because we lowly users can implement the CSS changes ourselves.

Yes, I turned both on and the colors changed slightly but again, the sidebar size stayed the same. Can someone show me what it should be look like because the userstyles page has no previews available?
Another weird thing is that there's something weird going on with the header, it causes the scrolling to hiccup on the upper part of the page on actual trope pages but not on the forums.
EDIT: The scrolling hiccup seems to only happen on sufficiently large pages. No idea what causes it but you should probably look into it.

The new Edit Page is pretty good, but the help text in Night Vision is almost impossible to read.
Apparently in the intervening hours since airing my grievances, the two main issues I disliked (the loss of the Preview button and hiding of the History tab) seem to have been resolved. Feeling a lot better about things. Only thing that I still find pretty eyebrow-raising is the use of YMMV icons for the YMMV tab's bullets.
All I really want is someone to restore the link to the old Title Search, that used to be under Tools in the toolbar. The PAGE for the Title Search still exists, (I got to it through a cached page I had open that was still in the old format) and it's been updated to the new design, but nothing seems to link to it right now. It is, in my opinion, a much more useful tool for finding actual pages on TV Tropes than the Google-based search available in the searchbar up top.
Of course, I only come to this place to look up specific series or books or movies or similar such things, and to read the tropes associated with them (and occasionally get lost following a link-chain of something that catches my interest). I don't really participate in the community as a whole, so a lot of the things that bother most folks here don't matter to me at all, because they don't affect the site the way I use it.

Each item in the Bugs and Wishlist pages has a little counter-looking thing in the lower right that you can click on. Scroll through either and you'll see ones that have gotten clicks. If there's something you particularly want to see addressed, click the counter.

@Oro Crimson - It is. If I remember correctly, I found it in a large "Kirby variation" picture on VG Cats long ago and I liked it so much that I cropped it out to use as my avatar for pretty much everything.

" 2.0 is potentially years down the road, for the record. If you think the changes that have been made now are drastic, what's being discussed for 2.0 will make your head look like something out of Scanners."
- preemptively panics*
I will say, I just noticed something that had me giggling
The front page says:
Merriam-Webster actually says
: a word, phrase, or image used in a new and different way in order to create an artistic effect
Full Definition of trope
1
a : a word or expression used in a figurative sense : figure of speech
b : a common or overused theme or device : cliché <the usual horror movie tropes>
2 : a phrase or verse added as an embellishment or interpolation to the sung parts of the Mass in the Middle Ages
So basically whoever wrote the front page did not actually look up their own source.
That's what those are? I thought it was to move items up or down... Tooltips would be helpful. Thx for the info.

Think they're referring to this.

Edit: I'm too slow at this.
Well they're not wrong. It clearly did define trope as a figure of speech.
It also defined it as some other things. But it did define it as a figure of speech.

I'm getting used to it, but I'm still gonna bail!
Not sure I see the logic behind that, seems like time wasted, but to each their own.
In the end I feel like, at least from a reader's perspective, the website is functionally the same and Night Vision fixes the blinding light white-on-white-on-white issue so I can't see myself quitting the only website that does what it does.
I mean, there's "All the Tropes" but like... I think that one died didn't it?
Though that does make me sort of morbidly curious.
