So yeah, the remakes showed up at this year's E3. What do you say about it?

Also, what do you say about the remaster following the "Spyro is special since he's a purple dragon" rule? The shown sealed dragons so far have new designs, which could lead to the other purple dragons in Spyro 1 changed into different colors.

Are they really following that "rule?" I actually wouldn't have a major problem with it if they did. I'd just find it kind of odd, since in TLoS it was plot-relevant, but there's not really any reason to stick to it in the classic continuity, since it has nothing to do with that storyline.

It wouldn't be hugely relevant to the plots unless we get some major expansions for Spyro as a character, but it could be alluded to (brief comments on it, no other purple dragons) as a way to make it easier for Skylanders jump-ins to adjust.

I mean, in Spyro 1 some dragons do refer to Spyro as having some sort of destiny or something along those lines.

It might just be a case of Early-Installment Weirdness or an Aborted Arc considering that's all but dropped in the next two games but clearly, it was intended that Spyro had something special about him from the start. It's something I'm curious will be picked up in a possible sequel game.

In general, I'm more so curious what's gonna happen after the Reignited Trilogy than the remake itself. The trilogy is likely going to sell well on pure nostalgia alone but nostalgia can only get a series so far, as evident by the sheer number of people who want to tear anything Kanto related to shreds in the Pokémon fanbase in recent years because of the sheer amount of Gen I pandering recent gens have had.

I'm really curious as to how they're gonna approach the aether based elephant in the room. Like, I know it's a very touchy subject in the fanbase (a fact that you can tell from the very first WMG on the Reignited Trilogy page devolving into a massive Edit War; of which I made a Trope Repair Shop thread for, btw) which is partially why it intrigues me so much.

That side of the fanbase is still very dedicated and active; to the point that during the Skylander days, pretty much all major fan groups I found were primarily Legend Spyro focused. Several of them are still fairly active and are mostly indifferent to the Reignited Trilogy so it's clear there's still a part of the fanbase that can be tapped into. In fact, Toys for Bob are apparently aware of this considering how Cynder is still a relatively important character in most supplementary material.

I could see them adding Cynder to the classic series. Initially I thought she'd be an alt playable character like Coco was in the N. Sane trilogy but logically it'd make more sense for her to be added in a possible sequel. Chances are she would likely end up just being a Distaff Counterpart of Spyro less they try to also adapt Malefor into the classic series, which honestly might be an improvement to some.

Either way, I doubt they can ignore that side of the fan base forever. All it would do is cause some serious unrest in the fanbase, like some other franchises I could mention.

personally, as a fan of the original trilogy, and deeply hated the legend of spyro games, I want it, and its dark and brooding but away from the remakes.

in my perfect world, the remakes ignite making more games like them, and not the LOTR ripoffs with hack and slash gameplay that was Legend of Spyro.

(I'm usually not this negative to games I know other people like/aren't for me, but I want more of this spyro, and legend of spyro and Skylanders had, up til now, done more than kill the franchise it. warp it into something unrecognizable to why i liked it)

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?

I feel that Legend of Spyro was very much a byproduct of its time. The mid-2000s gamers had a very much 'fuck 3D platformers' mindset after the PS1/N64 era. Not to mention that everything was trying to be Darker and Edgier for the sake of avoiding being declared 'kiddie'.

There were many problems with Legend of Spyro I will admit. I'm not denying that; I'm much more of a Classic fan myself. However, I won't ignore it also still has a very active and passionate fanbase, one that's feeling rather alienated by the unfortunate bad blood that's been stirred up because of the Reignited Trilogy bringing back a lot of the old guard into the fanbase.

Personally, I feel there are some elements from the Legends trilogy that could work for the Classic trilogy. The major problem LoS has is that it forgot to give lighter moments/Hope Spots so it doesn't feel like a drag to play through. A problem which the classic series doesn't have.

Having Malefor but having him be mocked/called out on his poor plans by Spyro, having Spyro convince his army to leave him/show them that not all dragons are evil, flatout have Spyro call Cynder out on her self-pitying... There's a lot of ways they could go to 'fix' LoS problems without it feeling out of place for the Classic series.

Interestingly, A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy come off as prototypes for what was done with the Legends games. From the villains (Red coming off as Malefor with Cynder's backstory, The Sorcerer looking like he'd play the role Malefor did in Legends), Hunter coming from a village, changed details against older games. It really does make you wonder if AHT to SL was considered to be the first attempt to reboot the franchise or at least take in a new direction.

Yeah. A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy did kind of feel like proto-LoS in many ways. It was pretty clear that they kind of wanted to do something else with the franchise; even though, despite some faults, I feel like A Hero's Tail was pretty decent for a post-Insomniac game.

I think that's been the franchises biggest problem from day 1. It's never really had a dev team that's been passionate about it. Even the creators, Insomniac, made it pretty clear they wanted to move on even as early as the second game with how it had signs of trying to find alternate gameplay styles for its missions and mini-games.note  For me, it's a major reason why Insomniac will the series real 'dad'. They may have created it, but they never truly cared for it.

Even the LoS devs, despite Jared Pullens recent comments making it clear they had way more planned with that trilogy than originally intended and were quite passionate about it, only seemed passionate about it because they basically rewrote and retooled things to fit their own world so much that the only real things they had in common were a purple dragon named Spyro.

This is why I'm kind of hoping that, despite hijacking the series with Skylanders for several years, Toys for Bob is actually interested in continuing the classic Spyro series for reasons outside of dollar signs. Apparently, they actually have been listening to fans and responding to common criticisms about the remake so farnote  so here's hoping.

Part of the issue I think is that Spyro's style of game (collect-a-platformer) really hit its greatest reach in the late 1990s to early 2000s. By the time A Hero's Tail came out it was apparently old news, hence that game doing more to move away from the Insomniac Formula than ones before it. What with the move away from the portal system, new more serious villain, more of an attempt to worldbuild.

It's possible that if the remaster succeeds we might just get another reboot continuing where Year of the Dragon left off. For ease's sake I assume it'd build on the bit in Yot D's epilogue where Gnasty Gnorc and Ripto team-up (getting us what Enter the Dragonfly was meant to be).

That'd be interesting. I've never played Enter the Dragonfly (although I've heard things about it), but I would still love to see what it could have been.

It's still mildly hilarious/stupid that there's demos for levels that aren't even in the game.

If everyone were normal, the world would be a dull place. Like reality television.

Can I just take a moment to geek out about Gnasty Gnorc's redesign?

Right Here

Not only does he look fearsome and ugly (THAT DOES IT!), but there's just a lot of stuff that's been taken from the old design and given new detail.

Shoulder and helmet spikes are bigger and sharper, his club actually looks like a club and not Styrofoam, and his neck has these three scars that could only have come from an adult dragon, given him not only a bit of credence to his reputation as someone who'd need to be banished, but also making Spyro's defeat of him feel like that much more of accomplishment.

Adult dragon: leaves three small scratches on Gnasty's neck

Spyro: kills Gnasty with a single burst of flame breath

He doesn't die though. He crystallizes the dragon again in the complete ending and partner ups with Ripto.

Hmm, he definitely looks better in that image than on the cover. But I definitely need to see more of him in motion.

If nothing else, its an improvement over the polygonal look.

The Spyro games were some of, if not the very first video games I ever had. While I kind of lost touch with anything after the first three games, the third one was always my favorite. It's also the first game I ever got 100% on without cheating

The Spyro team really wants us to look forward to San Diego Comic Con this year...

(Apparently one of those guys is Stewart Copeland, who was the music guy for the original Spyro trilogy. Hmmmm.)
