Empowered goes webcomic

The not-quite fetish comic by Adam Warren is now available online, in a similar way as Atomic Robo. One page of the old stuff a day, though I'm not sure what will happen once it catches up. Maybe it will go like Robo and switch to a pure webcomic.

For those who don't know, this comic is about the superhero Empowered, a girl with severe body image issues—not helped by the fact that the suit that empowers her is skin-tight and won't function with anything under or over it. Oh, and it rips like tissue paper. She spends most of her time getting trussed up by supervillains. But she does have her flashes of competence, and she never stops, no matter what happens to her.

First page. We're currently at volume 1, page 143 (out of 9 volumes), so it's gonna take a while to catch up.

Sweet, I really like this series. Hope it'll catch up soon so that we can get some progress with the story. I wanna see the resolution of the Willy Pete storyline.

^_^ I suspect this is what the Girl Genius people went through, and the PS238 people are still going through, knowing where the story is going, but not having it all unlocked yet.

Neat! I've always wanted to read this comic but I'm always broke, and pirating it would just seem wrong.

Getting more backstory on Thug Boy. And Ninjette has officially become Emp's friend after her semi-failed kidnapping last chapter.

Ooh, awesome. I've read some of early parts of the comic, but never got around to getting it all.

I borrowed the first six trades from a friend. Looking forward to reading this all... when I'm not at work.

I never cared for the black and white, but what little I've read of Empowered comics was great.

I always liked the fact that Warren's characters actually had eyebrows, not just penciled lines. I dunno why, thick eyebrows on a girl are kinda hot. Like Ninjette.

And now we start the chapter that gives us our first glimpse at Willy Pete, a fun and friendly villain who just wants to make people happy.

Sistah Spooky's backstory begins. It's especially important in demonstrating why she hates Empowered for no good reason.

Well, no good reason, but her bad reason is kinda understandable. I mean, just because Emp happens to look like all the vapid blonde Alpha Bitch girls at her old school, though really she has no moral high ground there since she does the exact thing they did and sells her soul to a demon for good looks. Just happens to get magic out of the deal due to a contractual screw-up which will come back and bite her in the ass HUGELY later.

Sexy side effects of Emp's suit. While it's a joke here, it becomes a plot point later. The suit is intelligent, and ThugBoy wonders if it gave Emp an increased libido just so that she'd get something unambiguously good out of the whole deal.

Oh wow, this is great. I've wanted to read this for a long time (pretty much since I started using this wiki) but none of my library's had it and as with n341100 I've had other things to spend my money on.

The long winter is over, and I think this is the first time we've seen the Caged Demonwolf's voyeurism show. It's also a hint towards Ninjette using a jitsu that turns sexual frustration into fighting prowess.

Dang, if this is how far the webcomic is, it's gonna take a while to catch up with the print releases.

Yep. He's not updating on weekends, which is slowing it down. I don't know why he's doing it like this. Atomic Robo released an entire issue every day until they were caught up.

Anyway, update. Obviously Emp is a heartless slut for daring to sleep with her own boyfriend.

First time we see Cindablokk's power. Also hints about his origin.

All caught up and the notes are fascinating. I've never appreciated how much thought artists put into little details like speech bubble tails and which way characters are facing.

I think the update speed works for now because it's still faster than most webcomic readers are used to. But there will be a point (very vague spoiler) where we get 100+ pages of the same extended fight scene . . . that sounds awful at 1 page a day. It was tiresome even in the dead-tree edition, where you can skim :(

So, I've been reading this online on the basis of everybody saying "oh, it's more than just porny bondage cheesecake, if you keep reading it's actually good!". And I've gotta say, are we at the part where it becomes more than bondage cheesecake yet? Because so far it's mostly just that, and if anything it's getting worse.

I'm still reading at the moment because it's a relatively low time investment, but I'm starting to suspect bondage cheesecake with a few cute character dynamics actually IS all this is...

It's been a while for me, but the site entry notes that the drama really starts in Volume 4 and Empowered starts to really come into her own in Volume 5. Prior to that, it's gags with hints of something more serious.

I forget where, but Adam Warren recently expressed enjoyment at how the comments section seemed to be divided into two groups: Long-time readers experiencing it all over again, and new readers finding out how awesome this comic is for the first time.

A very interesting exercise in first- and secondhand discovery.
