According to the older entries in the Super Mario Bros. franchise, Mario and Luigi are ordinary guys from Brooklyn who were transported to the Mushroom Kingdom.note  Although we humans have done some very impressive things (The creation of This Very Wiki deserves a mention), it's unlikely that a normal guy could do the things that Mario does - jump several times his own height, defeat all sorts of monsters - you get the idea. Plus, there's the fact that he's referred to as "Super" Mario. That got me thinking - what if he actually has a source of power?

One possibility is that the Mushroom Kingdom itself contains some sort of magic that gives Mario his powers. But then, does everyone have it? The Toads probably have it, as some of them join Mario in his adventures in recent games. But what about Peach? If she has the magic too, why does she get kidnapped so often?

Another theory is that the power comes from a physical object that Mario carries. If I remember correctly, in Super Mario 64 DS, when Mario loses his hat, he can't activate the blocks that give him powerups. In Luigi's Mansion, some of Mario's things: his hat, his glove, etc - have been scattered around the mansion. If one or more of those objects was his source of power, that would explain how the Boos were able to get him - they took away his power, rendering him helpless. However, this theory doesn't explain how he got kidnapped in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. And, again, does everyone else have items like this? And, if Luigi too has items that give him power, why didn't the Boos take them away from him?

What do you think?

Will somebody PLEASE cue that boid?

It comes from his 'stache, of course.

I really don't know.

You say I am loved, when I don’t feel a thing. You say I am strong, when I think I am weak. You say I am held, when I am falling short.

[up] ACTUALLY, that was always my theory, since in 'Superstar Saga', Stache is a legit RPG Stat that can be leveled.

But this is a pretty interesting take on it as well. I think this theory has some weight to it.
