I get out of bed, dress myself for a bit, and then check in with the Commander or his adjutant — assuming it's not me who is on adjutant duty, of course. The Commander likes to rotate us — After that, I fall in with the logistics, exploration, or patrol teams. Any of those usually takes the better part of the day. We get back to the base by evening, go through debrief, then it's free time until bed.
You know, just the other day my team passed through a refugee camp. One of the refugees, a lady who looked like she hasn't eaten in weeks, came up to me and shoved a toddler to my arms. I struggled a bit, trying not to hurt her or the boy, but she just kept insisting. The kid himself was bawling his eyes out, screaming that he wants to be with her. Eventually, he kicked me off and leapt back to his parents, so we used the chance to escape.
Do you what we did back then was... bad? I mean, we can't bring a human kid along with us, not in the same way we pick up stray animals. But it feels wrong to just leave the kid to his fate like that. Maybe there's something else we could have done?

There was that time when we were at... Greenwood? I think that was what the place was called. Anyway, I was always reasonably good at impersonation. So, it was the academy. Alwan was a few months ahead of me, Greta hadn't left yet. Either way, there was one servant mind there. Technically I wasn't supposed to be in that room, but either way, I was in the good books of most of the teachers there, worst case I end up on incinerator duty. So anyway, I impersonated the headmaster... Their name evades me. Either way, I did a good enough impersonation to get the servant mind to lock the next person who entered in the room, and I never got caught for it because the Servant mind thought I was the headmaster. So anyway, um... Was it Hodge? Might have been him. Anyway, they were locked in the room for days, living off the nutrient goop they feed the Servant minds before someone found them. Great fun. And we never talked of it again, the teachers made sure of that.
Wait, that was you who locked him in there? I would say I'd lost all respect for you, but he did turn out to be evil, so he deserved it. I don't know how to feel about that.
