So turns out the martial art Mai uses is actually Tai Chi, only way faster than what you'd usually see.
Also the fondling of herself to get different types of chi comes from Ancient Chinese Art of Wu Xing.
For what seems only as fanservice at first it's actually pretty well researched.
Nobody ever practices muay thai, Silat, or Eskrima. -grumbles grumbles-
I actually thought this series was going to have some cyberpunk elements, due to the heavy emphasis on human perception and aesthetics during the scene when the MC wakes up.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing. It seems fun and great and hilarious and gorgeous, and I like youkai stuff, but I really don't trust the combination of Kyo Ani and mixed-gender casts, something about that combo just isn't my jam...
That limbo party though, perfect. I'll definitely keep watching, for now.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot. That was way more fun than I expected. (Also, after experimentation, I found I was able to do a much less exaggerated version of the boob bounce, so... okay, fine, you win this one Kyo Ani.)
More than anything else a martial art must look good on screen to get animated.

I loved the whole Limbo sequence. And the justification that they are dancing Limbo since they are stuck in Limbo. Even the characters knew it was stupid and made no sense.
Boobs are amazing and versatile.
@Shlugo - Dude, all of those look absolutely spectacular, in addition to being deadly and practical. I didn't say it was a problem, though, since that this is a fantasy work and the history and philosophy behind the martial arts (In addition to Tai-chi, there was also bit of Baguazhang mixed in those moves, by the way) just blend in better. It's just more of personal peeve, really.
Man, magical Chinese martial arts, stupid fanservice, annoying fairy-ish sidekick, yokai (oh come on, they are but in the name), girls wearing bloomers...this anime is so 90s-early 2000s. I'm not saying it's a problem, I'm just saying that I remember a lot of this kind of manga coming out during those periods. Of course, none of them ever got Kyo Ani treatment, so they didn't get to be as vibrant.
Also, what's with Kyo Ani and its fixation with this specific kind of panties, that blue and white stripped one? I remember four incidences where a girl's panties get brought up in Kyo Ani works (K-On, CLANNAD, Amagi, and this one) and ALL of them are mentioned to be that specific design. I just find it to be odd.

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing. No, little girl panties are something completely different and a hell of a lot more creepy.
I don't know why it is like that but it's like Zettai Ryouiki.

I honestly don't see the connection between that design and innocence.
Also, I remember one of my female acquaintaces/anime watcher wondering about that design. She asked, "Why would any girl wear that panties? That looks ugly as fuck." To which I replied "How the hell am I supposed to know?"
Shrug, all I know is it is a serious thing so much so you can buy T-Shirts
on the subject and Memes like this

Panties with funny shapes or characters I can totally understand, but that? I don't know, regardless of what its purpose is, I've always thought that it was unsexy AND ugly.
Oh well, that's just me. -shrugs-
Anyhow, back on topic, has anyone here thought of Kirby during Reina's first scene?
That Vacuum Mouth was certainly surprising. very interesting look too.

I know how they look, and since I watched Strongest disciple Kenichi, I have a pretty good idea of how they look animated. None of them have the smooth flow they were going for with Mai. Though seeing a high school girl going all "Apapapapapapa!" on her enemies would've been pretty cool.
I love 90s anime style so seeing a modern take on them along with Kyo Ani treatment is great.
At least it was not animal print panties, the epitome of embarrassing panties.

After watching the first episode, one word I'd use to describe this - fun. Right from the start the episode was brimming with energy -the characters, the dialog, the action, all of it was full of energy and very entertaining. The basic set up - super powered teenagers dealing with mysterious creatures - is a well known one but they are definitely putting their own twist on it having lots of fun with it. I mean a Limbo competition? is crazy, but somehow still makes sense in context. Also, after the first episode I like every single character, which doesn't happen all that often.
The anime looks amazing, the character designs are great, the animation is Kyo Ani at it's best and the movement was just incredible. They are going full throttle with this.
I have a good feeling about this one. Don't disappoint me Kyo Ani!
