So Split took #1, and M. Night proves he can be a good director if he sticks to Urban Fantasy and more psychological stuff. Big sprawling epics are so not for him, but more intimate stuff like this is.

[up] Not only that, but it made back its $10 million budget (all of which supposedly came from Night's own pocket) four times over in its first week.

Rogue One is now the second-biggest film of 2016, surpassing Finding Dory and only $120 million behind Civil War.

So...what do you think will be the highest grossing movie of 2017? On my list are naturally Star Wars 8, Got G and Spider-man.

Wonder Woman and Justice League get a big maybe because I am not sure of feed up the audience already is with the DCEU and considering the bad word of mouth....if they are good after all, they could surprise everyone, but all in all...yeah, perhaps to 10, but I doubt they reach top 5.

Of the animated movies, Despicable Me 3 is naturally poised to make a lot of money. Otherwise it remains to be seen, animation is kind of unpredictable.

And finally I make a really bold prediction and say that Beauty and the Beast might break records left and right. Nobody really seems to pay that much attention to the movie, but the Disney Live Action adaptations have done all very well so far, and that is practically their crown jewel.

I have to think Star Wars VIII. It likely won't make as much as The Force Awakens (ESB and ROTJ made less than A New Home, and Clones and Sith made less than Phantom Menace), but if it's even decent it will be somewhere between TFA and Rogue One, and the superhero movies for 2017 are mostly smaller ones rather than big team-ups like BVS and Civil War. Star Wars will easily have over a billion, and Marvel's only pased a billion worldwide with the big team-up and Iron Man 3 (and the latter was coming off the mega-hit of Avengers).

Justice League is big and could do well internationally, but I don't know how long DC can keep disappointing people and getting large viewership. To beat Star Wars, it would need to do a lot better than BVS, and it's hard to see how it could avoid being disjointed and overcrowded given the volume of new characters.

Domestically, Star Wars will easily be the top movie. Worldwide, it's the strong favourite.

Don't forget The Fate of the Furious. Furious 7 had the best foreign gross since Avatar (it even beat TFA & Jurassic World overseas).

[up] Marvel doesn't have any big teamups this year, but they have a sequel to an acclaimed $773 million film & the first MCU film with their most famous hero in a starring role.

[up][up] True, but Got G was the surprise hit of the MCU...it made more than ANY of the other "first outings". And everyone loves Baby Groot. It also helps that you can watch Got G without ever seeing anything else, so you have less of a continuity lock-out. So far, every Marvel movie has made more than the previous one of the franchise with the exception of Age of Ultron, but then, Avengers made crazy numbers. If Got G Vol 2 makes more, too, which is very likely, it is for sure in the top ten of the year.

And Spider-man: Homecoming has Marvel's most popular comic character and Marvel's most popular MCU character. It might not reach the highs domestically, but international, I am betting on it.

Yes, GOTG 2 and Spiderman won't be beating Star Wars for first place, but they're definitely both likely to be in the top 10.

The odds do not suggest the sequel to an acclaimed $773 million film will earn more than the sequel to an acclaimed $2 billion film in one of the most popular franchises of all time. For context, TFA made about $500 million more than Avengers.

My guesses for the top 10 (in no particular order) are Star Wars, Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Pirates, Transformers, The Fate of the Furious, Despicable Me 3, Justice League, Wonder Woman & either Beauty & the Beast, Planet of the Apes or Logan.

Here is my prediction of what movies will be in the top 10 worldwide of 2017 (in no particular order):

1. Logan

2. Beauty and the Beast

3. The Fate of the Furious

4. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

5. Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales

6. Transformers: The Last Night

7. Despicable Me 3

8. Spider-Man: Homecoming

9. Justice League

10. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

[up] Guess we both kinda had the same mind set

I'm not going to try to predict all the top 10. Of the top 10 for 2016, 3 were surprise hits: Zootopia, Secret Lives of Pets, Deadpool. And there were plenty of other big movies predicted for the top 10 that flopped utterly and were forgotten (Alice Through The Looking Glass, anybody?). So 2017 is sure to have some surprises as well.

But I wouldn't bet on the live action Beauty and the Beast doing well. Yes the animated one is one of Disney's all-time most popular movies, and that's why I wouldn't bet on it. You don't remake perfection.

I also suspect that Pirates is at or beyond the end of its lifespan. Disney, you've got loads of other popular franchises - put the cursed coins back and let your zombie pirate franchise die.

I think the only chance to beat Star Wars is Justice League, and that depends not only on the audience reception of JL, but if Wonder Woman renews faith in the DCEU to lead in to it.

Star Wars has only one thing that might make it equal VII's numbers and that is delivering on Luke Skywalker. But now that Star Wars is a regular thing the yearly hype will settle into more consistent numbers, so maybe a little more than Rogue One but not the 2 billion VII pulled. The same goes for Logan and Spider-Man, as well as the other MCU movies.

Basically, audiences who want to see a movie will already turn up opening weekend, but it's the movies that are not surefire hits already tend to be the surprise successes with long legs.

I doubt Justice League will beat Star Wars because of DC's recent track record with BVS and Suicide Squadnote  + Star Wars is a more popular property. I guess JS could end up being more profitable due to Hollywood Accounting, but I think Star Wars has the upper hand here for raw gross.

I'm saying that JL is something of a wild card here, every other movie has a more predictable box office take. IF Wonder Woman does well, it's a positive sign for JL.

I doubt that Logan will make the list. For starters, it is r-rated...yes that worked out for Deadpool, but that was also a funny movie which had a great story attached to it. Logan is the third Wolverine movie and none of the previous ones are particularly popular, to put it lightly. The movie will most likely end up in the usual X-men ballpark, which is far away from being a top ten blockbuster.

Both previous Wolverine movies were very lucrative (just not Top 10 Lucrative) and none of them had the sheer level of hype this one has going for it.

Logan is a wild card just like Deadpool before. It's following the same tactics: Highly strong marketing campaign (those trailers hit the internet like a wild fire), R-Rated goodness, (Possible) strong word of mouth.

[up][up][up] How is Justice League a wild card? Bv S already had Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman crossing over, and didn't even make to the top 5 of 2016.

Wonder Woman would have to truly outperform every expectation to affect Justice League all that much. JL is built on goodwill from Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman, both films featuring their hottest properties (Batman and Superman plus a slice of Wonder Woman), and both films had disappointing box office returns. Batman V Superman and SS only soured DC's critical reputation even further, so people are even less willing to give their movies a chance now.

Like I said, unless Wonder Woman is GOTG-level success, I see JL performing around the same margin or slightly below Batman V. Superman.

Deadpool was a surprise hit because it had a brilliant marketing campaign which went viral and reached men and woman alike. I doubt that Logan will have the same pull. Those who are the most excited about it seem to be more or less into the X-men franchise anyway.
