Statistically it's ridiculous that there would only be one family with the surname "Skywalker" in a galaxy with tens of trillions of beings. Of course, in movie logic it's virtually guaranteed that anyone with that surname will be related, because of Conservation of Detail.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Maybe they f*cked up one day.
Like, they raised him as Luke Lars until he was a teenager and then, one day, they told him he was adopted. Luke wanted to know about his father and the name, "Anakin Skywalker" was out of Owen's mouth before he knew better. After that it was too late, because Luke started calling himself Luke Skywalker as a teenage rebellion thing and coming up with fantastic ideas of who his father must have been, and nobody involved could figure out how to make him shut up about it without revealing that he's supposed to be in hiding.

So many awesome story ideas that went unexplored in canon.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm picturing Obi-Wan giving Owen the Gibbs Slap while Li'l Luke is running around in the background testing the name "Skywalker" on his lips.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. That is unlikely given that Owen wouldn't give Obi-Wan the time of day, figuring him (correctly, as it turned out) to be a bad influence on Luke. Of course, it's possible that the argument over concealing Luke's identity caused them to be estranged...

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I figure they were begrudgingly in on the concealment but that Owen didn't think too highly of Ben because, while he didn't know much about what went on, he knew that Ben and some other Jedi took Anakin off to become a Jedi and then some shit happened and now Luke needs to be hidden from him.
"I need you to conceal this child from the consequences of spending too much time in my company," is a hard conversation to have without immediately biasing the other party against you.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub....In hindsight, Beru's "he has too much of his father in him" is a bit weird given she only met Anakin once, and Luke hadn't slaughtered a few dozen sandpeople.
Or why they took in Luke when they barely knew Anakin.
I don't know how long Owen and Beru knew Shmi though. Less than ten years, but besides that. I guess she left a good impression?

Something about you making NCIS references makes me giggle.
Chalk it up to another one of those "Lucas wasn't thinking enough about the OT when writing the PT" things.

My various fanfics.I'm sure they had a long talk with Obi-Wan about Anakin's life story.
"Hide this baby," isn't something you agree to without a long list of questions.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I want to know how many of you here think "hero losing hand" will occur in the next movie.
I say Rey gets to keep her hand. Instead, her lungs get damaged by blaster fire forcing her wear a respiratory mask.
Ren would be so jealous and everyone else might shit their pants.

Silliness. A scar or two might work, though. The big drama with Luke in the OT was, "Will he fall like his father?" which seems not to be an issue for Rey — there doesn't seem to be a hook for her to be tempted by the Dark Side. Maybe we'll get that in the second film.
That's a bit specific.
The three-act trilogy structure generally dictates that
- The hero achieves a small victory that does not entirely overthrow the villain, but would be a satisfying conclusion if the trilogy ended here.
- The villains come out swinging and the hero faces his darkest hour.
- The hero pulls a miraculous comeback and saves the day despite the odds.
The Empire striking back is generally what saves the second installment from feeling like a delaying action until the third can close out the series. In works that avert it, the second film often winds up feeling like nothing's really happening.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.It is always amusing to observe the LOTR trilogy swaps the arcs around (Fellowship of the Ring ends with the Fellowship broken, Boromir and Gandalf dead and Saruman and Sauron standing unmatched, it's only in The Two Towers they manage to flip the tables with the downfall of Isengard).
"All you Fascists bound to lose."![]()
Yeah, generally the middle story is when evil appears ascendant, and the heroes end in defeat or on the run, but not completely out. The final story is when the heroes return with newfound power and/or resolve and emerge triumphant.
LOTR messed with a lot of the standard narrative formulas, deliberately, but Tolkien was writing a larger story from the getgo. Further, it wasn't written as a trilogy; rather, it was broken up by fiat by the publisher since they couldn't bind a novel that was large enough to contain the whole thing.
If you look carefully, LOTR is technically broken out into six major arcs.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm not sure Shmi knew any stories about her amazing Jedi son. Attack of the Clones seems to suggest that Anakin hasn't been back to see her since Phantom Menace.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Also, it doesn't seem like she was in much of a position to learn or tell tales for a good portion of that time.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"- ANAKIN: Master Yoda, I'm worried about my mom back home. It's been three years since I left and I've never seen her once. Can I have leave to go check on her?
- YODA: Train yourself to let go of that which you fear to lose.
- ANAKIN: That's your answer for everything!
- YODA: To the Dark Side, attachments lead.
- ANAKIN: Yeah? Well, I'm gonna remember that when I have a wife and kids and you're living alone in a swamp!
- YODA: And which will be the happier and more stable, I wonder?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I doubt Vader's true name was well known. The Emperor framed all the Jedi as criminals and it probably would have complicated things to go "All the Jedi are evil except for that Skywalker guy who's a pretty cool dude and now always wearing the black armor" instead.
He probably just said Anakin had an honorable death and claimed Vader was just this other guy.
Hence why nobody really made the connection with Luke. Nobody in the Empire knew enough to put two and two together except Vader and Palpatine and Luke never stood out enough for any lower ranking Imperial to ever need to point him out to them.
Which is probably why Owen kept coming up with reasons for Luke not to go the Academy and to keep him on the farm.
Because if Luke went to the Academy he'd likely do amazing, and word might get high enough that then Vader or the Emperor would notice.
well I saw the movie, I enjoy quite a bit, Finn is favorite chararter of it by being so clumsy, Ray is good but sometimes I feel she is a little bit OP at times, while Kylo is good but...anti-climatic at the end, on the other hand is refreshing to see a villian who is not twice as powerfull as main lead so for the sake of drama, so I hope Kylo get a boost.
Also maybe is just me but I feel chewbaca and droid are more chararter and not funny non-human sidekick, that was pretty cool in my opinon, I expect Ray and Finn become his friend after the lost of Solo, as for Luke.....well, he is not longer the hero, let see where his chararterization comes around.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"

I mean.
We know Shmi was a slave when Anakin was born. And that they were owned by Gardulla the Hurt before she lost them both to Watto in a bet.
And. Like, that's it. That's the earliest detail we know about the Skywalker family and where they come from.
Even the old EU didn't ever go earlier than that.
Was Shmi born a slave? Was she even born on Tatooine?
