Well, shit. So I'm bored tonight and I finally bothered to watch a full episode, solely on your glowing recommendation Alli and... I'm really rather disappointed.

... you should've pushed harder. That was fantastic, and there's only like, six episodes on Hulu. Damn, I wish I got into this earlier.

You can still download the first four episodes free on iTunes and the last five episodes are up on Hulu. If you want to pay, iTunes and Amazon have the entire season up. And eventually, the first season should make it's way to Netflix.

In other news, Season 2 begins October 21st.

Oh and here is Rachel Bloom on Lip Sync Battle going up against Michael Shannon.

Yes, but that would involve.... iTunes.

But seriously. That was excellent. The writing, cast, acting, jokes. Even the musicals, which I thought would bug me were hilarious.

If you haven't seen some of Rachel Bloom's previous music videos, you should watch them, too. Starting with this one:

That's the other thing. I had seen "You Can Touch My Boobies" and didn't realize it was the same person.

And holy crap her boobs.

So as I'm watching the show from the beginning... is Josh's stint in NYC ever explained? Everything I've seen makes it seem really odd he'd move there and apparently try to make it. Just doesn't jive.

But there's still a couple episodes I haven't seen, so yeah. Might be touched upon.

Marc Webb is back directly the first episode of season two. Which is pretty awesome — the only reason they got Webb to direct the pilot was because it was done by Showtime, but it appears Webb really loves the show. Which is great, because the direction of the pilot was outstanding.

So I've been trying to get into the show after really loving some of its musical numbers I saw on You Tube. However, I'm a few episodes in, and it seems like it's really making heavy use of Cringe Comedy, which I . . . am not a fan of. Does that change as the show goes on, or is this just not for me?

It changes as it goes along. The tropes page says that it changes after episode 8, once they knew they would get a full season, but I'd say that it actually changes around episode 7 ("I'm So Happy That Josh's So Happy!") which actually ends with Rebecca acknowledging that she has mental problems and needs therapy.

There's still a lot of Cringe Comedy aspects (like a pole dance in episode 9), but they become lesser as episodes goes on. And it's less about seeing how much humiliation Rebecca can take and more about "Holy crap, she's really not a mentally stable person." Which actually culminates in an episode where she figures out that she's the villain in the story and resolves to change.

Yeah, the Cringe Comedy gets... less, but it's still there. I agree, it is painful (I have had to actually stop episodes in order to just walk away in pain.

So... anyone have any thoughts on what they should have called this show? Because seriously, I've tried to get almost all of my friends to watch it and very few get past the name.

... fewer still get past the trailer, but yeah.

Seriously, I wish this had been titled something else, but I'm just not sure what.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is what the show is about though. It's like the name Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It tells you exactly what the show is about — some people will be put off by the name, but that doesn't mean you change the name.

The problem, according to Rachel Bloom, was that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was originally going to air on Showtime, so when people heard the name, they would think it was ironic and deconstructing the concept, which it is. The fact that it's on the CW, however, means that what would have been seen as deconstructive now is seen as playing it straight. Which it doesn't.

Well... you kind of do. The name (along with the marketing) really does hurt the show. And I'm legitimately worried it will get cancelled, because on top of being niche, it has a name that is going to put off... actually probably most of the people who would like that niche.

But there's no other name that could fit it, really. What would you call the show? Rebecca? West Covina? The Show That Is A Dark Romantic Comedy Musical About a Mentally Unhinged Woman Who Travels Across the Country to Be Near Her Ex-Boyfriend?

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend legitimately describes the show. Again, some people will be turned off, but those are the people who judge shows without watching a single minute.

I'm trying to get some discussion going in a mostly dead topic. There's not a lot to talk about. Why not just spitball ideas, chat?

And you seem to be sorely underestimating the value of... having viewers. Most shows tend to think that's a good thing.

And honestly, marketing aside, I really never cared for the title (of either the show or the character) Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Bunch is crazy, but her craziness goes a lot deeper than her ex-ness. I think it sells her madness short. I also think that "ex-girlfriend" also... just never felt like the right term for her. Their fling was at such a young age it doesn't really seem... right. It's not inaccurate, it's just feels off.

But you are correct. She is crazy. She is an ex-girlfriend. But she's a lot of things.

[up] Right. But none of those fit well into a title.

You can discuss it all you like. I still think that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the best title for the show, even if it does put off some potential viewers.

Again: Joss Whedon said that when he named Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he knew the name would put off some people, but he didn't care. That name fit and so does this.

I mean a bunch of people were getting excited about it from "Getting Bi" and than you say the title and it just gets awkward, I don't know what else they would call it, could be fun thinking of alternative titles though.
