Edit reasons should be as concise as is necessary to get the point of the edit across.
EDIT: Hang on...I think I may have misinterpreted the OP. Still, I can't see a need for an edit reason that's longer than 250 characters. That's almost double the length of a Twitter post, and no edit should require that much justification. If it does, post it on the discussion page and make that clear in the edit reason.

Inspired by a small conundrum I had today. What about a generous character limit for edit reasons, like 400-500 characters or so? That should be enough to explain the reasoning behind an edit without people writing college essays and such.
