And at the end of the Direct, the actual character reveal: Elliana, the Aerial Artillery. She's a steampunk mech-riding snek that rounds out the "air" characters, with powerful tools that can overheat her mech if used too much.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaUnfitting, you say? Need I remind you he is canonically a fish?
Anyways, they broke down his playstyle on the livestream afterwards: he's an install character who can taunt to open a shop UI, letting him either buy a new Neutral Special or buy an armor that changes his properties as a character.
Outside of that the idea is that's he's a balanced somewhat-easy-to-use character who can adapt to any situation... though he struggles with recovering and escaping combos.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaThat was a joke.
We don't know what he looks like under his helmet. But whatever. It was nice seeing more art from Elranno of the rest of the cast during the reveal at least.
The fish headed dude the statue attachment is based on is also another character entirely
that shows up as a cameo in armor outposts.

I'm surprised that they introduced a human character into ROA. I'm not surprised they went for another guest and even less surprised that it's Shovel Knight, who's basically become the Spider-Man/Wolverine of indie games by now. Like, I love the guy, and the game he hails from, but he shows up in so many other projects that I wouldn't be surprised if he's more well-known for being a crossover fiend instead of coming from an acclaimed indie title.
My only beef with him is that he's not an animal character (unless they bring up the fish thing), but I also had to warm up to Clairen after she showed up, so it's probably just me. Despite that, his gameplay looks real sweet though, and at least he's fully playable in a Smash-like game (though I still love him as an Assist Trophy in Smash Ultimate). Once I get a better computer I need to get back into this game.
Speaking of Smash-likes and Shovel Knight, Brawlout (which I don't play and I don't think has a thread) had a new trailer
that made fun of/referenced Shovel Knight's constant appearances... by having a shovel raised up on screen as 8-bit music starts playing, before revealing that the shovel-wielder is the main character from Dead Cells.

Not gonna lie, Clairen kind of sold this game for me. Her design's great and she took the gameplay of a dude I never cared about from Smash and gave it that extra bit of flare to make it interesting - her tipper mechanic is amazing.
I wish we would of got somebody like Dust or Hollow Knight instead of the indie community's bicycle playable, especially since he's (probably) a human who doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast.
Incidenally, If you press Taunt + Special + Parry
all at once as Shovel Knight in this game....
Hey it's been a year.
Another April Fools Direct that is also 100% true in everything it says.
An update on 3D Rivals (featuring shields and grabs)
Creatures of Aether going to steam this summer
Tales of Aether comic coming out later this year
Rivals getting rollback netcode
and prolly the most hype thing,
4 WORKSHOP CHARACTERS ARE BEING CANONIZED AND OFFICIALLY IMPLIMENTED BY THE END OF THE YEAR
A huge necro-post, but I just want to say that Rivals of Aether 2 is releasing tomorrow on 9 AM PST. There was a demo that happened during Steamfest last week and many content creators from the Super Smash Bros scene decided to give this game a go. Here's the release trailer:
I had a really great time playing the demo. I felt a sense of familiarity with the free flow combo gameplay while still experiencing new mechanics within the game (shield, grabs, and ledges are introduced in Rivals 2). I haven't been this excited since Ultimate's release date!
On a side note, I just played against a former friend I haven't interacted with 4 years ago. Luckily we still recognized each other and exchanged some pleasantries about the game.
You have a good heart. Don't lose it.

we need a second part to story mode pronto
i mean, what we have right now is wholly incomplete and honestly really poor but that's besides the point
But a story mode featuring Absa, Etalus, Ranno, Clarien, and... Ori? would be lit.
