Outside the library, wait, what

Cole tilted his head a little at the request, frowning a little, glancing back at the library, then back at the man, looking as though it took him a long second to process the request, before speaking...somewhat carefully. "Miss Tairee is right inside. She can answer any questions you have about the city. ...unless there is...some reason you...can't go in?"

Just outside the library, this can only end really badly or really well

The man was silent for a moment, eyes just a little surprised looking, but then he closed his eyes and let out a little chuckle. "I like you, kid. So how about some honesty, hm?" the man said, then shifted over, actually sitting on the ground, more to Cole's side than in front of him now. "Oh, but it's gonna have to be our little secret, just you and me" the man added, motioning a finger to Cole and then himself.

Universe Buffet — This will be on the test

Rex looked visibly surprised after hearing Makoto's barrage of questions, so much so that he took a few seconds to answer her. She was actually interested in the nature of his abilities. For all his usual boasting and claims of how cool he was, Rex never really expected anyone to care about the specifics of his powers beyond seeing them as something they could take advantage of. Even Providence was guilty of that sometimes.

"Uh, it's more like I have an idea and a blueprint in my head but I'm still trying to figure out how to put all the pieces together. You know, making sure the math checks out, seeing that nothing overheats, that I can actually wield it... that kind of stuff"

She also wanted to know about his current arsenal and there was very little to report in that regard. She had seen most of it in action, and hopefully that wouldn't be disappointing.

"Mhmm, I think you saw most of it in that episode. But that showed things from a while ago, now I can also build a pair of nunchucks and a giant tentacle"

"I'm not always the best at keeping secrets," Cole said, keeping his eyes on the man, though he didn't really move away, either. "If you want to hurt people, that isn't a good secret to keep from anyone."

Still, he stayed, just letting out a soft sigh. "I want to help people though...if it will help, I want to do that."

Above the city

As he flew over the city, Stinkfly carried Rean in his arms, using some of his eyes to look around as he flew. As soon as Rean pointed out the buffet, Stinkfly directed a few of his eyes in the direction he pointed.

"Hey, I think you're right!" Stinkfly told him, starting to move quicker in that direction. However, he noticed movement out of the corner of one of his eyes, and he looked down, seeing Hercules and Garrett below. It seemed like they were approaching the buffet as well.

He stopped moving forward, however, when he saw a familiar face on the streets below. It was the plant lady who had been evading him all this time! Without wasting a moment, Stinkfly turned so he was facing the plant woman from above and fired a volley of sticky goo out of his eyes in her direction from above. Hopefully it would gum her up before she did anything dangerous. Then he could capture her.

Universe Buffet- The One Person That Loves Tests

“Oh, so it’s more of… something you have to completely visualize before creating, and it has to be something that would function if built by normal means.” Despite his nanites being something beyond robotics in her time, it seemed like they still had to follow the rules of mechanical physics. It was a hard contrast to her Persona, where spells and abilities were instinctual and completely unscientific. She didn’t have to think about how to set off an energy blast, or heal a wound, or understand every part of her bike. All of that was like breathing. Even when she trained, new spells were learned as if she’d just forgotten them until then. There wasn't creativity or studying involved, and so hearing how Rex did have to plan and understand what he was doing fascinated her.

“That sounds complicated for someone to handle all in their head without some kind of cheat sheet. I-I meant that I think it’s really cool, by the way. That you can do whatever you can think of.” Maybe the nanites could remember for him after a build was completed, like a computer executing a programmed task. Makoto sat back a little more in her chair and closed her eyes, rubbing her chin by habit as she thought.

“I guess that a tentacle is a little more versatile than a more traditional crane or grappling hook machine. And a nunchuck is not a weapon I’d imagine you using, but if it works…” She looked up at Rex again. “Have you ever thought about a drill configuration, or a kind of repeating long range weapon? Like an automatic gun or cannon.”

Above the Prison

Lucario stiffened almost imperceptibly at the militiaman's words. With the speed of someone totally used to this, Riley immediately pulled out Lucario's pokeball and returned him. Since Salamence would obviously have to struggle to carry all three of them at once anyway, it seemed to be the smartest move.

"Alright, flying ship," he muttered, partially to himself. After returning Absol as well, he took a seat on Salamence and repeated the request. The two were soon up in the air, looking around for the aforementioned ship. Once that was located, it was a simple matter of just flying straight at it until they reached it.

Universe Buffet — Wasn't expecting feedback

"Something like that, yeah"

Makoto admired that Rex could keep track of all the information about his weapons in his head and he didn't exactly know how to react to that. Should he brush it off and pretend it wasn't a big deal? Or just play it up and boast about his accomplishments? The first felt like a fake reaction, and the gloating option was a bit pointless since Makoto was already fascinated anyway.

"Oh, thanks. I'm used to it by now" he said, not sounding all that convinced. "And I g-guess it is pretty cool"

She kept commenting on his choice of weapons, surprised to see that Rex used nunchucks—that seemed like a jab at his lack of precision but, then again, they were glorified flails more than anything else, so trying to correct her would just prove her point. She even had some ideas of her own and seemed one step away from sketching up some concepts.

"Well, I can make my fists turn really fast and dig with them, that's sort of a drill. And I already have a cannon, but it's not like a gun. I don't think I could make my own ammo"

Universe Buffet

Makoto wasn't really used to seeing Rex so… modest about his own abilities. Was the topic weird for him? Or maybe it just wasn't something he discussed much with other people.

“So you can use your builds for more than one explicit purpose, I didn't know that. A drill would be a bit redundant then… And I could see why bullets would be hard to create, since firing them would cause a loss of nanites unless they returned to you after. I should probably leave the brainstorming to you,” she said, reining herself in. The only machines she had any real knowledge of were motorcycles. “Engineering isn't exactly a strong suit of mine, but I'll… keep training myself until I'm stronger, I guess.” That was honestly all she could do in an attempt to gain another spell. And maybe read more books on combat tactics.

Burnt ruins -> buffet

Against all odds, it seemed they were actually going somewhere. Ben, Rean and Louie flew away, leaving Garrett and Hercules to go on foot. "Well, let's waste no more time," Garrett said to his companion. "If we hurry, we may arrive shortly after them."

He turned around—and there was buffet, right in front of them. "...I almost expected that would happen. Spares us a walk, at least."

As it turned out, they'd be spared a city-wide search as well, because it was at this point that the plant-lady showed up—still bearing a grudge towards Garrett, it seemed. The ominously smoking apparatus at her side did not make the situation look any better.

Thankfully, it was at this point that Ben intervened. Making use of the distraction, Garrett fired off a gas arrow towards the plantwoman.

Yuna Yuki (Library) - Volunteer

Well... that was quite the problem Veela had. A tale of war, love and death, as romantic as it was tragic, not unlike many stories Yuna had never actually heard before. Of course, she was not really good at love advice and the like, but she did more or less get the gist of the story itself. Furthermore, Veela herself had drawn the attention of someone who seemed to know the man Veela was after. It didn't sound like she'd heard everything, however.

"I think it's really cute too!" the middle schooler agreed with the militia woman. "But things are a bit complicated between them, so..." but suddenly, she had a flash of inspiration. "Oh hey Veela! Maybe she can help us figure something out!"

Just outside the library

The man stared at Cole for a moment. "So, you're a little church boy?" the man asked a bit rhetorically, and incredulous. Then, he shook his head. "I wasn't planning on hurting anyone here. Not unless they try to hurt me or my friends. Got a few former 'business associates' back home on my list, but trust me kid, they deserve it" he went on, glancing out at the street like this was some perfectly normal, casual conversation.

Outside the buffet, well that was (not) easy

With Ben shifted some distance away, there was a delay before he actually got close enough for his attack. In the meantime, the floran advanced menacingly; or at least as menacingly as she could. "Iss time you pay for trying to ruin fun..." the floran continued, pumping the bellows slightly and causing a short stream of fire to shoot onto the cobbled street in front of her; a display of ability rather than a full on attack, as it didn't reach Garrett or Hercules. It was then that Stinkfly's goo splashed onto her from behind, suddenly sticking up one of her arms and her legs, much to her surprise and annoyance. Garrett's quick arrow after that hit right on target, but from either differences in air intake or just personal stubbornness, it wasn't knocking her out right away. "WHAAAT!? NO! NAAAAOOOO!!!" she screamed, trying to struggle out of the substance, and also turning and pump the bellows for a stream of fire towards Ben, but it was fruitless.

"Heh, looks like you're done for. Score one for the City Knights! Wasn't even a challenge!" Louie said, after hopping out of Swishee's bill when she came close to the ground. After a moment, Swishee turned around, flapping her wings faster and honking repeatedly. Louie looked at Swishee, then towards where she was looking, "what is-"

Something blurred through the air, then there was a sickening slinch of metal punching through flesh, followed by a thump as Swishee hit the cobbled street. A long spear materialized into the visible spectrum, sticking right through Swishee's head. In a stretching out moment, Louie glanced back at the pelipper, eyes going as wide as possible, until the pokemon disappeared with a blur, leaving just the spear on the ground. "S-Swishee?" Louie barely whispered, suddenly having a hard time catching his breath.

From the direction Swishee had been facing came a threatening, clicking growl.

Into the skies, with Riley

Going up into the sky, Riley had to look around for a bit, but sure enough, there seemed to be a ship flying around. The Thunder Child had transformed into a trireme for the day, and was currently flying above the edge of the city, almost a kilometer away from Riley's current position.

There wasn't much else flying above the city, but the skies weren't entirely unoccupied either, including what seemed to be a figure in blue armor and blue wings coming out the back who was gliding around some distance away. And a couple of things descending down into a street out of view near the dome of the buffet, too far away for Riley to clearly distinguish.

Inside the library

Veela looked up, almost hopeful, but more confused. "She could help? How?" Veela asked in return.

"Uh, yeah? How?" Rachel asked, on a similar level of confusion.

Above the City

It was strange, Riley thought, for the skies to be so clear of life. No matter where he was back in Sinnoh, there were usually at least a few flying-type Pokemon in the air. At least that made finding the airship easier. He didn't even really need a description, since there wasn't anything to confuse it with.

He instructed Salamence to fly closer to the Thunder Child. It didn't take them long to get to it, since there wasn't anything blocking them. Once they made it, Riley didn't hesitate to land on the deck of the ship, stepping off of Salamence once he had the chance.

"Well, at least this wasn't a complicated first step or anything," he muttered to himself, looking around for someone who seemed to be in charge.

I say that aloud too sometimes, just: "man, no life."

"I've...never really been to the Chantry before..." Cole looked down at his hands for a moment, then back at the man, frowning somewhat. "...if you don't want to hurt anyone, why do you need me to go into the library for you? Miss Tairee doesn't stop people as long as they aren't hurting anyone."

Universe Buffet — Your turn

"Well, if you are still interested, I've been thinking about building an energy shield. Because apparently everyone and their mother has one and I feel I'm falling behind" Given Reinhardt, the aliens that had attacked the city, and even the little shield pen-shaped generators, it was good time as any for an upgrade "It wouldn't be too hard either, Providence has a bunch of shield generators so I know how I could make it work. But I bet I could build something a little sleeker"

Makoto's comment about her own abilities did raise a few questions. Namely, that if she was so surprised to see that Rex had to take into account real life physics and other boring topics to end up with a cool end product, what did she do to get her bike? It was part of her mind so maybe focusing on her own emotions was related to summoning it but it still was curious to see how introspection translated to "cool bike". And for that matter, its design couldn't be random, right? She had mentioned something about liking bikers and the brand of rebellion they represented, which had made her Persona a motorbike to begin with. But aside from that, Rex knew nothing related to its actual construction—ignoring that whole deal with the devil.

"Actually, how does it work for you? You don't have to remember how your bike works?"

Aboard the Thunder Child

There were a number of figures up on deck when Riley landed. More notable was a man in full armor, nearly identical in make to Caboose's, only mostly green. He had a slung bow, and a large hammer, resting the head on the deck and holding the end of the handle. Most of the people in the ship had that similar anxiety as the rest of the city, though a little different; like a trainer and team waiting to start a battle that they knew was going to be very difficult. The man in armor however, was completely calm, and stared at Riley with his armored mask betraying no emotion beneath. Some boy of around 15 or was sitting at one side of the deck, staring at Riley and the salamence, eyebrows lowered in thought and slight recognition.

There was also of course, lieutenant Wells, still wearing the Roman legion legate uniform, who approached from the front end of the deck. His own aura was not calm, but was set and determined, like a sailor staring down an intense storm. "So you're the one interested in joining" Wells said, stopping no more than a couple paces away from Riley. "I'm lieutenant Wells. Come, and tell me about yourself" the lieutenant added in an authoritative tone, holding a hand forward for a shake.

Just outside the library

"Never been to church? Well I didn't fancy it much either, until I found out how people would... Actually you probably wouldn't care to hear about that I gather" the man said, glancing back to Cole now. "In a way, boy, if I went in there I would actually hurt quite a few people. You see, all of a sudden, some old friends of mine tracked me down for some new, grand adventure" the man started to explain, gesturing an arm out at the city in a wide, sweeping motion.

"Difference between this time and our previous adventure though was that I wasn't given a choice. I was hand picked, along with my friends, to be brought here by that god or whatever that made this place" the man went on, pointing his arm at the sky and vaguely waving his fingers. "And for that simple task, a big load of people back home who had been dead, were brought back to life! But, it also came with a little caveat, see, my friends and I are not allowed to go into this fancy library" he continued, pointing his arm to the library, "not for another... Three days? Something about nobody being able to be harmed."

"So that's why I need someone else to do it for me, which is where you come in, boy" the man concluded, gently poking a finger to Cole's arm.

Thunder Child

The prevailing emotions on the Thunder Child were much more pleasant for Riley to be around. As a trainer, he enjoyed the tenseness that came before a battle, even though he understood that everyone there was worried, and for more important reasons than a fun battle. Still, it was somewhat comforting compared to the fear down below.

Even if Wells hadn't introduced himself, the aura Riley was getting was enough to convince him that he was the leader. Before speaking, he pulled out Salamence's pokeball and returned him. He had a feeling being the only one with a dragon at his command would be awkward.

With that, he stepped closer to accept the handshake and introduced himself. "My name is Riley, I'm a Pokemon trainer and aura user. I haven't been here long, but I want to do something about the strong feeling of fear and anxiety people here have."

Universe Buffet- The Mask That You Use To Face Hardship In Life

“Oh, a shield! Right, that'd be really useful. We don't have energy shields like that where I come from,” Makoto said. She did remember how effective the ones she'd seen here were though. She wasn't prepared for Rex to turn the same questions on her, and she had to stop and think about it.

“How does it work for me…? I, um, don't have to think about my Persona’s actual shape much. I don't really “build” Anat like you build your machines. When I connected with and summoned her for the first time, she was already a bike, and I don't have to think about how she needs to look or function when I call on her. I mean… I do know how motorcycles work, my sister used to ride one frequently and she taught me how to do maintenance on them, but that had nothing to do with my Persona. If I designed her at all, it wasn't consciously. It's like how I didn't pick my outfit on purpose either. That just sort of happened.” Most Persona didn't change unless they evolved, but even then, Anat could revert to a mobile form easily.

“She wasn't able to switch to a more humanoid configuration until recently though. I'd just decided what I was going to do with my life after feeling like I didn't have any direction for the longest time. I guess that kind of revelation made her stronger somehow. A better Persona.”

Two Wants To Help, feat. Yuna

The militia woman seemed insistent on cutting into the conversation. Still, the situation seemed pretty clear-cut to me. It was unknown whether this Fastanook would abandon his loyalties to his side and neither was known about Veela's allegiance. Worse, apparently him going back would not be enough; apparently he would be taken away by some "Crimson Order"...

...Yuna seemed to believe that this Rachel could help us solve this problem, somehow. "I don't... believe that to be possible." I offered my word on the matter. "If anything, we would have to turn to Miss Tairee or-" Oh, right! "...though we would appreciate if you could summon Fastanook here, so we can see what can be done."

"Wait, your sister the lawyer" Rex said, sounding like he had repeated what he knew just to make sure it was correct. "She rides bikes. Somehow that sounds a lot more unbelievable than your Persona"

Jokes aside, Anat's form wasn't something Makoto had consciously designed. Even her clothes seemed to be randomly chosen as part of the deal. That was a little odd but even more so was how her Persona "upgraded" itself. Apparently, Makoto had found a purpose in life very recently and that had the side effect of making her bike be able to shapeshift into a mini-mecha.

"So she becomes stronger after a breakthrough? That sounds familiar. I mean, it's nice that things are going well for you. You are doing a good job with the Phantom Thieves"

With Ben now flying away with Rean in tow and Louie in the beak of Swishee it was only Hercules and Garrett left to walk to the buffet. “Right, stay alert.” Hercules said to Garnett before they left. It turned out thanks to the city shifting they were just outside the buffet.

“Why couldn’t you send me to my destination yesterday?” Hercules muttered to himself he was a bit irritated by the fact that the city was only NOW sending him to where he wanted to be as opposed to yesterday when he tried to get to the Library to warn Thomas and Louie only to have him end up at the grocery store instead. But thankfully it was a long walk anyway so he couldn’t stay irritated for long. By a stroke of luck, Herc and Garrett had managed to find the very culprit they were looking for first. The Plant Lady was there and had emerged from an alleyway and was now bearing down on the two.

When the Plant Lady recognized Garnett, Hercules then turned him and quickly said: “You know her?” and apparently according to her, they had unfinished business with each other. She had what looked like a pair of bellows and was threatening both with it.

Fortunately before the situation got dire, Ben as Stinkfly managed to subdue her by using the goo from his eyes to incapacitate her and while she was distracted, Garrett then shot out a gas arrow in her direction and she was struggling thanks to the gooey substance she was incased in.

“Atta boy, Ben!” Hercules called out to his friend after he did this it seemed the plant lady was dealt with the time being but with Swishee speared down from an unsuspecting attack from above. The worst was yet to come for Herc and the others.

Stinkfly stayed high in the air, trying to dodge the floran's fiery attacks, all the while holding on tightly to Rean to keep him safe. Some of his eyes turned towards Louie's Pelipper, noticing it honking before being stabbed and falling dead. Stinkfly gasped and tightened his grip on Rean, worried that he might drop the young man. Instead, his wings buzzed louder and he pointed his eyes in the direction that the spear came from.

"Okay, Huntbug, that does it!" Stinkfly shouted, shooting a large volley of sticky goo in the direction of where the spear came from, spraying in a wide area in that direction in case the predator tried to dodge.

Aboard the Thunder Child

"Unless you can stop a god who likes to change things up on a whim, I don't think you'll have much luck with that. Many people around here still remember the days like the ones where we got invaded by alien forces, or swarms of undead monsters. Most of them are just worried that another day like that could happen at any time" Wells said, shaking his head slightly. "You seem sincere about your desire to help, that's good. What sort of combat experience do you have?" the lieutenant asked.

"Pokemon, you said?" Thomas then said, walking up from where he was standing. "Wells, sir, I know of Pokemon. One of the City Knights is a pokemon trainer as well. They command their pokemon to fight for them, against other trainers in fairly sportsman like duels, from my understanding" the young wizard explained, then looked to Riley and added, "but he didn't say anything about 'aura', so I'm not sure what that's about?"

"Hmm, I see. I'm afraid you'll find little sportsmanship in the people we'll be fighting, if any. What about yourself; do you have any experience actually fighting on your own?" Wells responded, looking to Riley again after giving Thomas a nod.

The man turned his head a bit slowly to stare at Cole with a blank look for a few moments. "... Did you not listen to what I just told you? "As fake as it might sound, she did have a life before she went to law school," Makoto said. "It was only a few years ago too. She sold her bike though, since she didn't ride it much anymore. I think she thought it might give her a bad image at work..." As sad as that reasoning might have sounded, Makoto didn't doubt that someone would have used the motorcycle against Sae to hold her back in her career. It felt so odd for someone to be directly praising her for work that was supposed to be anonymous, but she took it anyway.

"Thanks. I... I guess it's going well. Okay, right now it isn't but a couple of months ago it was, and hopefully we'll solve our problem soon. And part of what i want to do in life is a way to ensure that the Phantom Thieves won't be necessary to have in our society for it to be fair. I want to be a Police Commissioner, so I can make sure the system isn't corrupt anymore. I want the officers to be more like my father was, trying to do the right thing even if it's not the easiest path. Even if it means bending rules that hurt people. I want them to be what I thought they were when I was a child."
