Ara Haan (Library) - Embracing the Dark Side

Ara stared at the woman in front of her as she told her story, and then at Tairee when she shared information about the demon that had apparently possessed her. And for some time, she genuinely did not know how to react. She was somewhat familiar with the situation in some ways, and she did feel sympathy for the poor fighter, but it was difficult to relate to such a hostile person. In the end, however, she understood.

She understood how it felt to be good at one thing and one thing alone. She understood how difficult it was to have one's mind being clouded by the influence of others note . And she understood to what extent demons could taint a person's mind and body.

In the end she laid her spear back on the table and, in a particularly bold move, embraced the woman in a firm hug, and whispered the two words that she thought best reflected her thoughts.

"I understand."

Ben glanced up. "Yeah, Cannonbolt is one of my aliens. Big and round and hits with the force of a giant cannonball," he explained to Thomas. He looked over at Eve. "I dunno what kinda force it has exactly, but he's like 9 feet tall and armor plated, and really heavy. The problem with this idea is I'd only get one shot and they can't carry me while I'm Cannonbolt cause he's like half a ton. I have to hit my target once I drop. If I miss, I'm dead. If the watch gives me the wrong alien I could be dead. And I have to be high enough up to build up enough speed or I won't be able to crack the armor."

He sighed, looking unsure of himself. "There's so many things going against me with this plan. But I gotta do something. And none of my other aliens could even put a dent in that thing," he explained. "I can't just... sit here and watch it casually kill my friends...."

Library

Kelsey's explosive outburst caught Jack so off-guard, he found himself taking an involuntary step back; Eyes wide in surprise and shock. He didn't really have any thoughts on it, beyond just taking in everything the woman had yelled. Then came the instinctive revulsion. This woman had killed people, for the sake of some god? A part of him was regretting helping her, if that's the kind of person she was. But, another part of him took note of her reaction, her self-condemnation, and her tears. But then, it was easy to feel bad after everything was already said and done.

Jack snorted and went to reply to the woman, when Tairee cut it off with a sigh. He turned to look at her, a fairly unamused look on his face. Ever since he'd gotten dragged into this city, he'd had to deal with countless he'd have been more than happy to never know could exist. He brought a hand up and rubbed the bridge of his nose, groaning at the influx of information. "Yeah, I've heard a bit about them. Even had a run-in with them earlier. They shot me, which was new. I also think I died, which I never expected to happen a second time; But here I am." Jack suddenly stood bolt upright. "The fight!"

He spun around to look at Rex. "You were there! What happened after I died?! The kids, were they ok?"

He turned back to Tairee as something else came to mind. "Wait, that group is run by a demon? And there are gods involved? I-" Jack's face screwed up in what was probably an amusing way, and he almost growled. Suddenly, he threw his head back and shouted. "What is wrong with this place!"

Taking a moment to calm down, he finally slumped forward and looked at Tairee with a blank expression. Noticing the books, he slid them towards him. Glancing down at the pictures on the covers, his brows furrowed slightly. Dryly, he said, "How charming."

When Tairee finally started explaining what had happened to Kelsey, a complicated expression spread across the spirit's face. That something like that existed, that could get into your head and twist it that cruelly, honestly scared him. He thought back on the damage someone like Pitch, who could only do some much with is power, could do. Had done before they'd managed to stop him. A world of nothing but fear. And then he thought of what Pitch could have done, if he had had the power that Tairee now described. He shuddered involuntarily, and he glanced over at the woman that had suffered under this demon's power. He felt physically ill just imagining it. No wonder she was acting the way she was. Just felt regretful and ashamed. Sure, he hadn't known but he'd still hit on something big. He'd have to try and make up for it, it's what a Guardian would do.

Jack's mood dropped even further when Tairee moved on to the next part of her explanation, a part that the Rex kid seemed really smug in bringing up for whatever reason. So, this demon had been free to wander the city, and had been going around using its powers to get inside of people's minds and twist them into doing horrible things; Including children. The temperature around Jack dropped for a short time, before slowly rising back to normal. He could barely even muster the energy to be angry at the time, it was just depressing instead. At least the little girl was safe now. The demon was lucky it was 'incapacitated' as Tairee had put it, or it would have had the pleasure of meeting him sometime soon.

He sighed, looked at the librarian and spoke dryly. "You know Tairee, every time I think your boss couldn't make me hate him even more, he somehow keeps managing to do so. So, the demon messed with people's heads and made them do terrible things. Could you, I don't know, could you fix it?" He pointed at her hands. "You have your special librarian magic or whatever it is, it couldn't be difficult for you to do."

Ocean => Platform - Calling in a plan

"I think we can work with that" she said over the radio as the pair reached the platform and she got onto more solid footing and turned to Sophie. "Yeah, I figured it would try attacking the turrets, which is why I was planning to be the one firing at it. Though even if we aimed for the joints or for the damage Miss Tariee already did, it might take more than one..."

Curly shook her head and adjusted her radio to channel 10 for a moment as she looked for an opening into the tunnels and headed below the surface "Curly Brace to the City Knights, That's what Ben called the group, right? Well I think I've got a way to finish this thing off. The militia told me about some turret structures not far under the surface. We might need someone to lure it near by since I don't know what the range on these things and they're stationary. I don't know what anyone else can really do though, any ideas?"

Ben jumped a little when he walkie talkie went off in his pocket. He pulled it out, listening to Curly's explanation of the turrets underwater. He winced. There was no way he'd be able to lure the creature over to the turrets. It was so much faster than him.

"This is Ben Tennyson of the City Knights," Ben said into the walkie talkie. "I'm concerned about this idea. That thing's gonna outspeed anyone down there to lure him and if he gets back underwater there's no way any of us are gonna be able to get him. No, I have an idea of my own," he told her.

He then explained to Curly all about Cannonbolt, and the plan he had made a minute or so earlier.

Library - Litlle Miss Exposition

After hearing from Zelda about what happened inside the library, Caro replied, "Well, thank goodness you managed it then. That must have been pretty scary. This place had gotten totally wrecked ... " She suddenly frowned as she focused on another rather worrying part of what the other girl had said, then adding, "Everything? That's rather unfortunate. But at least most of it can probably be relatively easily replaced, right. Unless ... Wait, don't tell that includes the harp too!?" It that had happened, it would rather upsetting for Zelda and that couldn't be replaced. Specially considering that, according to what the other girl herself had told her long ago, that harp wasn't technically hers ...

Sans then said that he had managed to sleep through the entire ordeal. At this point, that was much of a surprise anymore. He also asked her to explain what had happened and what they were dealing with it.

"Sure thing, Sans. Well, the boss of today's challenge is a huge stone construct. Despite its huge size, its also unbelievably fast and can fly. And as expected of something built of so much stone, its really tough. We hardly managed to deal any significant damage before it got here. Lune, Fried and I managed to hit a previously weakened spot and turned that into a more significant damage section, but given that thing's size, even that wasn't much. Then it reached this place and rammed into it. It would probably have dealt more damage, but suddenly, one of its arms completely shattered. That ended causing a huge shockwave and a really loud noise that likely temporally deafened everyone in the surrounding area. That was probably when you ended up waking up ... "

She then turned to look through one of the nearby huge windows, while continuing, "After that, the boss flew away and escaped. I don't we have much time left. This time around, we may not manage to beat the challenge ... " It was at this point that notice something else outside. Off in the distance, the sky was really dark, almost black. It couldn't be that much late yet, specially since the section of the sky closer to them was much more brighter, which only left one other explanation ... "Oh no, is it really gonna rain? If that happens, then I'll have to stay out of the rest of the fight. Fried can't handle that much water, so I can't go outside again while there is a chance that could harm him and don't want to leave him behind either. Not to mention that on a day like this, I really need his help in other fight effectively .... "

Library - club of inaction

Lots of new information was flying around the library while Sans was with Caro and Zelda. More discussion about that girl, Mary, plus the screaming woman who willingly worked under the demon just looking for purpose in life... It was a real mess.

The day challenge was some sort of giant rock creature it looked like and from the sounds of it, Sans wouldn't be able to help with it even if he wanted to. Luckily (?) it looked like a storm was about to start around the city, making so that Caro would have to sit out of it too instead of putting herself in more danger fighting that thing. For better or for worse, Sans was relieved either way.

"i think we still have plenty of time," he said, looking out at the dark sky outside, "y'see, after you and cole went to bed last night i stayed up for a while working on our cellphones and i'm pretty sure i went past midnight and nothing had changed. if i were to take a guess, i think the days now will last until the dawn of the next one."

He then took a look at his cellphone to look at the time, it certainly was getting late but if they had until around 6 AM to deal with this problem, it was still a lot of time. The boss probably decided to give them harder challenges to make up for all extra time they got. He definitely didn't hold back considering the damage caused to the library either.

"we just had a rocky start, the latest challenges haven't been too bad, so i guess we took this one for granite," he joked to lighten the mood a little bit, but he then shrugged "unfortunately, that thing sounds like it's the same as the ones we fought in the tunnels, which means my powers are useless against it so even if i wanted to i can't do a thing to help. i guess we're both sitting this one out now."

Seiga, The Library, Gotta Go
Seiga was sharing much of her thought processes with Viola now. This wasn't exactly the first time someone was angry at her for using a child as a jiangshi, but she wasn't going to lie to this librarian's face and act all "Ohh, poor Yoshika, I wish I was there to help her, oh my lack of humanity." She didn't even blink when she suggested her skull be crushed a while back, even if there were ways to fix her that she could've provided (like a simple sewing needle), so who was she to talk?

Besides, if one thing was true, it was that Yoshika probably enjoyed this death.

Seiga clasped her hands and bowed to her, not deigning her sarcasm with a response, and said, "There is such a spell, but I'll wait on asking for that, along with the rest of my materials lost in this attack, until later. If Yoshika somehow finds her way up here, ask her to stay put and tell her I'll arrive shortly."

She leisurely walked away from her desk with a quiet "Come, Viola," and headed out towards the pier. When they reached there, Seiga's arms cried in relief as the first boat they saw was a simple wooden craft with an outboard. She was worried she'd have to paddle across the entire city!

Pulling on the ignition cord, she looked to Viola and said, "Well, we have some amount less than 10 kilometers of underwater tunnels to check, in each direction, all to find one person out of thousands, and by my estimation a little more than 12 hours to do it." The engine sputtered to life with a puff of smoke, and she added, "This is probably the most futile and pointless thing I've ever done. Let's make the best of it, shall we?"

Yoshika, The Convention, GOTTA GO
Dang, it was even nicer than she expected! Looking at it with a drawn out "Wooow...", she was stopped in her desire to leave for just a moment. Seiga was totally gonna like it.

The rarely exercised skeptic portion of her brain wondered why, if Seiga supposedly liked the symbol of her religion so much, she hadn't painted it on herself, but that was easily answered: she didn't have anything to paint with!

With that in mind, she turned around and bowed to Joseph with a hurried, "Thanks, it looks neat, nowIgottagoseeyouagain!" as she ran away and out the door, waving as she did.

The Library — That's not how I remember it

Tairee explained exactly what had happened while Rex was absent and not so subtly pointed out that the heroes could use the help she had provided to finish off the rock lobster.

"Of course. That was the idea from the beginning"

At this point Kelsey's outburst made everyone in the library aware of her problems. Being the one that had helped cure her, Rex felt the need to explain her that the things she had done while under the demon's influence weren't her fault. At least not all of them.

"Could you calm down?! I know being possessed feels horrible but you can't just get yourself killed on purpose to make up for it. If you want to help, fine, but..." And the spear-woman chose that moment to hug Kelsey and tell she understood her "Uh... yeah, sure. Whatever"

Tairee explained the backstory of the Ruckus and how it had affected the city in the last few days or so. Jack commented that he had met the group before and the fight that had occured that day suddenly sprang to his mind. Now he wanted to know if any of the many kids on the team (Kind of worrying how young most of the group was, what kind of psycho would enjoy a story like that?) were hurt after his unceremonious departure. You really chose the best topic to talk about, Jack.

"You were the only one that died. We... we took care of the Ruckus" Rex's facial expression sombered somewhat when he remembered the cult's submarine sinking and the gunshots of the people inside that chose to kill themselves rather than drown.

Trying to change the subject, Rex went over Tairee's story. Everything was true but he felt she had purposefully not told the whole story. Specially not about what had happened to Cole. He felt the need to make sure Jack knew what sort of person that blonde girl was.

"Way to gloss over the facts. Mary killed Cole and made him turn into some sort of monstrous version of himself. She also killed Rachel before the Ruckus was even formed. You tell me if an apology is enough to make up for that"

The Library - Past Risings Again

John only remembered being stabbed for real this time with barbed tentacles before exploding into blue. Well, that's another to chalk up the 'i got stabbed' tally, the first being Jack Noir stabbing him.

He woke up at the library. There was seemingly a rather large crowd nearby where he was currently. Where were his two hammers?

John checks his Strife Deck. Oh good, they're there. Sighing with relief, he finally proceeded to stand up and introduce himself properly. To everybody.

"hey guys!" John waved with enthusiasm at everybody. "i'm back. what's our plan?"

With the misunderstanding cleared up, Seiga walked away from Lucas. Now that the conversation was over, Lucas walked over to where Ben was and heard his plan. Lucas contemplated the plan Ben had come up with. While it seemed risky, if Cannonbolt was as powerful as Ben said he was then it might work. But Lucas wouldn't be able to help transport him, as he couldn't fly. There was one thing he could do, though. Lucas walked into Ben's field of vision and spoke up "If... If you can f-find someone to c-carry you... I c-could make it easier for you to hurt it."

Lucas had already used a fair bit of buffs and such and therefore wouldn't be able to provide much more than a few Offense Ups before he was drained.

Platform => Upper tunnels (?) -getting a drop on the boss

"Yeah, I get that. Frankly fighting this thing at all is practically suicide. I think we might be able to reach above the water, but I won't know until I get to one and try it."

Curly paused and listened to the plan. She wasn't really sure how that would work, but she wasn't familiar with these alien abilities either.

"Alright... If that alien can do anything to a mountain it might might do something if you can get enough height and not get noticed. Those clouds might help, if you can avoid getting hit by lightning."

There was another pause as she made her wayou into the tunnels underwater in search of a turret structure.

"Tell you what, I doubt Sophie and I can do anything to help your plan. So I'm gonna go in the tunnels looking for a turret we can see that monster from. I can wait for you to do your thing and then start shooting if that doesn't finish it off. If you have anyone that can't do damage directly or help with your plan maybe they can find one too? If we can all attack athe roughly the same time maybe we can overwhelm it or at least confuse it long enough to do some damage and get away to regroup"

Of course, this was assuming the turrets could even scratch it. Had they been around yesterday and she hadn't noticed? Somehow she thought the militia would have more information if they had been around on a previous day. But she hadn't really asked Sophie what her plans were either. "Well Sophie, I don't expect you to stick around and wait for that thing to attack once it realizes what is shooting it. What do you want to do once we get there?"

Walking along beside Curly, Sophie looked up at the taller blonde. "I can go look for another nearby turret." "Like you said, more shots being fired at it could confuse it."

Viola I Library I A Pointless Expedition

I made a simple bow towards Miss Tairee before following after Seiga once she asked after me, going towards the dock. Upon there, she immediately gets custody of a single boat and started to tell me on what our odds actually are when it comes to finding her servant within the network of caves underneath us.

"When you put it that way, I'm starting to have second thoughts on this whole affair," I admitted my thoughts to her. "But I'll go out of my way and trust your judgement on this. I do need some fresh air after being all cooped up in the library all day long," That, and I'm curious to see what the City looks like on a day unlike yesterday.

Though, I do have to wonder...

"But can't you simply fly us both to the tunnels? Wouldn't that be more convenient?"

"Even my harp," Zelda said with a frown, "As saddening as it might be, I decided it wasn't worth saving when I had someone else to look out for." She shrugged. "I believe anyone from Skyloft would have felt the same. Besides, compared to some things I've done before this losing a harp isn't horrible."

After that, she just listened to Caro's explanation, although with how explosive some of the other discussions flying around the library were she couldn't help but look over at them occasionally. Given that the Lord of Change was being talked about, she had an idea of what exactly the subject of discussion was.

As far as her own conversation went, the important things were that the great beast was indeed the thing they were tasked with defeating today, they had more time to take it down even though taking it down was going to be one of the most difficult things they had to do, and that Sans and Caro couldn't do much to help due to circumstances.

"I suppose we could try coming up with a plan and then relaying it to the people who are fighting it," she suggested, "The real question is if we'll be able to get through to them while they're fighting it, given just how strong it is."

Yoshika, Upper Tunnels, The Wrong Person To Run In To
Of course, who would our protagonist run through the tunnels to meet, but Saki! Or Sony, or whatever her name was. Meeting her in this case implies "almost running over", as it probably usually does.

Yoshika came to a halt at Sophie's feet, skidding to a stop and falling on the ground when she saw the closest thing to an archenemy she had in this City. Since there was a complete lack of backup from her friend, she was strongly convinced that this floor might be her death bed. Yes, Sophie totally agreed to not hurt her on two separate occasions, but she was a tricky one. Sophie might renege on her promise, just to let out some pent up anger from being almost beaten by the poor jiangshi she mercilessly attacked.

Because she needed to get to Seiga in one piece, she held her hands up and said "H-Hey, it's you! I'm, uh, not here to take revenge, I was just walking through here, and, uh..."

She stopped, broke eye contact with her and mumbled "Don't kill me, please."

Seiga, On A Boat, Spot Chex
"Honestly, it is mostly just to get away from that library, yes," she admitted to Viola. "I don't want to be here when that thing comes back, or in general. There's still stuff to see in this place. And the boat? I could carry you, you seem light enough, but I'm not sure my arms could take us all the way to-" she stopped, as she looked to the side and saw one of those platforms in an easily reachable distance.

Huh, she must've not been looking too hard.

She shrugged, honestly surprised, and turned off the motor. Levitating off the floor of the boat, she flew up behind her, and said, "Of course I can fly you. Tell me, have you ever done this before? If you're not used to it, it really is a one of a kind experience."

Kelsey was rather startled when Ara suddenly hugged her, going completely still for a moment with her arms out slightly and her eyes wide, still nearly tearing up. After a moment though, she glanced down and started trying to push Ara away. "Wh-what are you doing? Stop it! I don't deserve- you shouldn't be-" Kelsey stammered, sounding like all out crying was surely imminent.

Meanwhile, Miss Tairee suddenly blurred for a moment, then was completely dry and back to normal, including a completely opaque shirt. She then looked to Jack as he went through the motions of responding to her previous explanation. "Oh believe me Jack, I ask myself about what's wrong with this place a lot too. And as I've tried to explain to Ben, it's not lack of capability that stays my hand" Miss Tairee said, and leaned back in her chair. "Imagine if you knew, that if you used your little spell that hits someone with a snowflake to make them happy, that the Man On The Moon would then crash the moon into the earth and kill everyone, starting with the very person you helped... It's not the best metaphor- certainly an exaggeration for one- but I trust that it gets the point across?" the librarian asked him in return, somewhat metaphorically.

It seemed like she was about to continue, but then Rex spoke up and it got her attention; and quickly, got her anger as well. "Oh really Rex? That's how yer' gonna be?!" Miss Tairee scoffed, her Southern Belle slipping back in as she stood up and slammed her hands on the desk. "The grown woman who joined Ruckus of her own choice and killed lotsa' people? Ah naw, she shouldn't be wantin' to punish herself; she was just possessed, it ain't her fault! But the little girl who didn't know any better and killed three people? Oh she's gotta be condemned to jail, because one of 'em was yer' friend" the librarian ranted at him sarcastically.

"And y'all call me biased!" Miss Tairee yelled in frustration, throwing her arms up in the air.

Meanwhile, since Ben seemed to be busy figuring out the details of his plan, Thomas turned his attention to Plague Knight. "Do you still have more of those trinkets? I could toss them again like before, but we'd have to get somewhere we can see the monster first" Thomas said to the knight. But then he looked worried and thoughtful as he added, "Although, given what it did before, I don't know if we could expect to survive a second go... I- I know it's for the good of everyone else and all, and we'd just come back, but still, I'm not terribly excited at the prospect of a suicide mission."

Then Thomas glanced over at John. "Uh... Hello? We were talking about getting Ben above the beast to drop one of his... 'Aliens'? Onto it that might hurt it" Thomas explained. "... Who are you?" the young wizard then asked John.

For a moment Nails looked worried, reminiscent of the scared expression he'd had while Phil and he- well, mostly Phil- were having their standoff against Cole and his friends earlier. But then he took a deep breath and raised his head up, steeling himself. "Don't worry about me. If I wasn't willing to get into danger, I wouldn't be with the militia. If he hurts me, I'll deal with it; and even if he kills me, you can pull that vanishing trick and get away, can't you? Just relax, and tell me about who he is. How I can spot him, and if he's armed, or has any special powers, that kind of stuff" Nails said to Cole.

The Ruckus member out on the boardwalk obviously didn't have the Ruckus symbol on him, as he was currently incognito; he was wearing a pretty plain t-shirt and jeans, and had a mostly shaved head. He had no weapons as he'd just died in the submarine not long ago, and didn't have any special powers to speak of either. Currently he was calmly walking towards the docks of the boardwalk, carefully glancing around to see if he'd spot anyone he knew, and was planning to get on one of the boats to search elsewhere on the surface.

Well, it seemed like Ben was all for an offense boost. He wanted to know how long it would last though. Well Lucas could give an approximate answer "I think... it lasts for long enough. Even if it d-doesn't, if I stack up 4 boosts at once you should at least have 3 left when you reach it. The bigger p-problem is if your transformation would r-remove the boost.".

If he applied the boosts immediately before Ben left, it would definitely have at least 3 remaining.

Underwater tunnels - Sudden stranger

"Sounds like a plan" Curly told Sophie, giving the girl a small smile as she hadn't quite expected her to potentially make herself a target after pointing out that the monster would likely come for them once they started firing. "Got it Ben, switching back to the militia channel in case they have more info, will call when I'm ready"

With that she internally switched channels while they walked until Curly spotted one of those doors hatches with the circular levers and went to open it to check for a turret control. But before she had time to look around much there was someone else suddenly talking to Sophie dressed strangely and with a paper stuck to her head for some reason. "Uh... What?"

Cole studied Nails for a moment, tilting his head to one side, then nodded a little, tilting his head back the other way. "...no weapons, no powers. He's looking for...for his friends, or a boat...to be able to search further. Still trying..."

He grimaced a little, before standing up. "...I can hide us both. If you walk with me and stay quiet, I can make you hard to see with me, and...we can walk right to him. We have to move quickly, I can't...hold it for more than a few moments, but...I can do it. Then I will be there and I can protect you if he tries to hurt you more."

Viola I Lbrary (Docks) I Onwards!

"I haven't physically flew myself, but... I guess you can say that I'm aware of how liberating it feels like, to have your own consciousness drift along the air, unrestricted. Obviously, this isn't the same thing, so I'm already looking forward to it,"

"So I'll entrust myself to you for this, Seiga. And I'll certainly appreciate it if you can get neither of us wet or drowned along the way," I answered her, half-jokingly at the latter.
