Into the warehouse

As Garrett approached the warehouse door, he chanced a look behind him. He saw that the office building had vanished, which was good news. Also, they had fresh company: Gon had appeared at some point, and a handful of armed men could be seen further away. Garrett scowled. For all he knew, these were copies out to attack them.

He turned back towards the entrance, in time to see Melanie get blinded by a flash bomb. "It'll wear off in a moment. Better hide, someone's coming." he said. "Freckles! Keep me updated where he is. Caboose, watch your back."

He ducked into the warehouse and quickly hid in a nearby patch of shadow. Once hidden, he nocked a moss arrow and began slowly moving around the boxes, towards where he supposed the other Garrett could have been standing. He also made sure to beware an attack from above.

With the Thunder Child

The portal opened opened, sending the piece of flaming wood through back at the figure on the distant rooftop. It smacked his back and basically just bounced off, seeming to have little if any effect on him. He did turn his attention towards the portal though, contemplating it for a moment, before throwing another roof chunk through it. The chunk of course came rocketing back out the friendly end of the portal, upwards into the air nearby Lewis' general location.

Meanwhile, the militia members worked hurriedly to get the rest of the civilians off the ship, and with the last of those, the asari hopped out. "That's all of them! Come on!" the asari yelled upwards, waving her arm.

Militia members hopped out of the broken side of the hull, one of them commenting as he came down, "we've got one more still on top deck, on the gun!"

The militia member on the cannon heard the calling, took a moment to fire one last shot directly towards the figure on the distant rooftop, then hopped off the seat and started running back towards the other side of the deck. He only briefly paused to look back after hearing the cannon projectile explode when it hit the distant figure; because it had impacted his fist, when he countered it by punching it out of the air. With a cringe of worry and fear, the militia member turned away and ran again, moving to the edge of the deck and jumping off towards the ground.

Judging by his wide eyed expression, he had slightly underestimated the distance to the street below.

In a warehouse

"Hide, right" Mel said with a nod, rounding the corner of the door and moving inside- promptly bumping right into a large box, because she couldn't see. "Ow" the Fangirl complained quietly, rubbing her nose.

The fake Garrett was still up on the second floor catwalk, using shadows to hide while preparing his bow and an arrow. When Caboose moved in with Freckles calling out the fake's location, the fake Garrett cursed and moved quickly, along the catwalk at first, then vaulting over the railing and onto the top one of the aisle of boxes; at the same time, he tossed his gas bomb at Caboose. It probably wouldn't work, but the faux thief didn't know that. Caboose hadn't landed any major hits, but he did get a shot through the fake Garrett's leg, making the copy hiss in pain as he managed to suppress screaming out.

In a street somewhere, with Rean

The streets were still mostly pretty barren, but after a nearby shift, Rean did hear sounds of a fight. Just around the corner of a building was a simple basketball court, in which were Silanea the lamia, Tuudol the wood elf, Del'Guk the two headed ogre, and a few other non-humans. Silanea was in the middle of a rough circle, and the rest were starting to charge at her, some with weapons and some without. With a scowl and a hiss, Silanea conjured an ethereal shield in front of one arm, letting the ogre run himself into it, while making a flying, ethereal blade with a motion of her other arm. With a single motion, she swept it through a few of her attackers, pausing then to counter lunge one of the others that had gotten past the blade, near tackling him down and wrapping her tail around him.

Silanea swung the shield about and smashed it into Tuudol's face, sending the blade back before Del'Guk could recover, to stab it through his chest and force him back. Then she made the blade fly back out at another angle, nearly slicing the ogre in two, and swept the blade through the rest of her attackers. Finally, she brought the blade back to herself, and stabbed it down through the head of the man who was struggling in her tail bind. The whole engagement had lasted maybe fifteen seconds, with only Del'Guk still on his feet, but he was staggering and would eventually fall dead just a bit later.

"Damned doppelgangers" Silanea muttered as she uncoiled her tail from the dead man, and hadn't seemed to notice Rean yet. None of their bodies were vanishing, which meant Silanea was right to call them so. (Though if Rean understood that nuance about the day was another matter.)

Warehouse

After hearing the fake Garrett jump down onto some boxes, and a moment later hearing him hiss in pain, the real Garrett could now tell more or less where the fake was.

However, he did not attempt to attack right away. Instead, he looked around to try and see if there was some way to get to the second floor catwalk while staying in the shadows.

thunder child

I tried kicking the return shot back the way it came, like playing ping pong in a Zelda game, commenting "Well that didn't work. Never mind, close it!"

For what it was worth, the boat was empty now, apart from the one guy who'd been at the one cannon. That guy, too, soon left in such a rush that he apparently forgot what gravity was. Not at all liking where that was going, I quickly made a mattress under him to break his fall.

Hearing the sound of the annoying guy that'd evaded its senses, Cascabel levitated one of the smaller boxes in the building and tossed it in that general direction.

The Thunder Child

Upgrade saw the militia empty the ship. It was just him with the flying wreckage. He focused on the building that the evil individual was tossing stuff from.

"All right, you! I'm right here, hit me with everything you've got!" he shouted. "That is, if you're not scared to see what gets thrown back your way!"

With that, Upgrade started using his upgrading powers to soup up the engine as much as it could go. He started moving what was left of the Thunder Child straight in the direction of the figure throwing roof chunks, speeding up faster and faster and faster.

When the Thunder Child started moving breakneck speeds, Upgrade released his grip from the ship, changing his shape to slow his descent, as he turned the broken half of the flying battleship into an enormous makeshift projectile, flying like a gargantuan missile towards the building the evil figure was standing on.

"A bullet has impacted the fake's leg. Their mobility has been negatively affected," Freckles reported to the group, before adding his location.

As the gun said this, Caboose looked down at the gas bomb. There was definitely gas in the air, and he definitely breathed some of it in before realizing and holding his breath, but it didn't seem to be having an effect. The sim trooper felt a bit more sluggish, but his freakishly strong constitution let him mostly shrug it off.

Before there was a chance for him to potentially inhale enough that he'd be out for the count, the soldier walked forward and away from the bomb. An implacable armored figure out for the thief's clone. He slammed some more ammo into Freckles and took aim. No line of sight, but he was willing to just keep the gunfire going as he looked for a way up.

For all he knew, he might manage to hit him through a solid surface. Not like he was counting on it, though.

In a warehouse

The conventional ways to get up were a couple of metal staircases, neither of which were totally hidden in shadow; however, Garrett could try scaling some of the aisles to get up on top of the stacks of crates, then vault over the railing of the catwalk.

Meanwhile, the fake was moving along the top of that box aisle quickly towards the far end of the warehouse; or as quickly as he could with his wounded leg, while the thrown box and rifle bullets peppered the side of the boxes behind him. He readied a noisemaker arrow and quickly fired it off to his left without really aiming, causing a racket of noise over on that side of the building.

Crashing the Thunder Child for fun and profit

The militia member hit the mattress, letting out a yell of pain, but all he had really suffered was a badly sprained ankle.

The figure on the distant roof looked back over towards the Thunder Child when the portal closed. Upon seeing that the ship was moving towards his location, he started ripping chunks off the church roof and throwing them anew, only pausing once it was more clear that the ship was on a crash course. Rather than try to get away though, he crossed his arms and braced himself.

The remaining half of the ship plowed into the front of the church, creating a thunderous noise as bricks and wood and bits of machinery were smashed into each other and scattered. A great billow of dust was thrown up, as the church collapsed in and the ship was destroyed utterly. Before it could even settle, there was a follow up blast of bright orange energy and fire, as the power distributor went off. The blast wasn't as devastating as Rick was predicting earlier, but it did blow maybe a fourth of the ensuing rubble pile, scattering chunks around again.

There was no clear sign of the assailant yet, living or dead. Whatever his condition, he was probably buried under the rubble at the moment.

Gon, following things.

Gon went to stay back and follow the fake Garrett when he was on the attack.

Are they? Gon wondered if the actual Garrett was prepping for an ambush.

The assassin to stay a bit behind until he saw the fake/actual Garrett get inside.

Better move.

Gon moved in fast and quiet, using the fight to cover his approach. He got prone and took a peek through the door to see how the fighting was.

Trying to stay quiet, Garrett started climbing the boxes, to get atop the box aisle where the fake Garrett was. He heard the noisemaker arrow, but obviously ignored it.

If he managed to climb to the top and still could hear the fake Garrett being atop the box aisle, he'd try and shoot a broadhead arrow at him.

the spot where the thunder child previously was

I floated slowly to the ground, dispelling the mattress once I'd ascertained that the guy was mostly fine and...watching Ben fling the remnants of the boat into the distance at the rubble-throwing guy, like this wasn't an act of mass destruction that'd have huge collateral damage. "So...you don't think there was anyone else in a 2-mile radius of that, do ya?"

For what it was worth, the guy was down...for now, at least. (I had a feeling they were someone very durable, to put it one way.) I glanced around, confirming that this was enough of a breather to get it out of my system, and promptly screamed "IF I HAVE TO SPEND THAT LONG IN MIDAIR AGAIN IT'LL BE TOO SOON!!"

For some reason that surely made sense in its head, Cascabel (after briefly flinching at the noise) decided the best course of action for it was to Screech in Clone Garrett's direction in some kind of noise war.

Upgrade, forming his body into a flat shape like that of a parachute, floated down to the ground and landed in a puddle on the concrete of the sidewalk. He reformed himself, moving towards the assembled group, transforming himself back into Ben.

"Took care of that creep. We shouldn't have to worry about him anymore," Ben said, looking down at his watch and moving to select Riptide. "Now let's get you patched up," said Ben. He transformed into the water elemental and focused his attention on the injured Militiaman, using his water powers to attempt to heal the man's wounds.

In a warehouse

The fake Garrett was coming up on a gap between the uppermost boxes on the aisle, which he was probably about to jump over, when he glanced back over his shoulder due to Cascabel screaming. That's when the real Garrett hit the fake with an arrow, going into his torso from the left side. With a grunt and gasp, the fake Garrett staggered, then tripped and fell between the two boxes, landing on the top part of the shelf directly.

It also took the fake completely out of sight for the moment, though Freckles could track that he was still alive, slowly moving one arm over to the arrow stuck in his side.

Near the wreckage site of the Thunder Child

The injured militia member let out a sigh of relief as his ankle was mended, then stood up and carefully experimented with putting weight on it. "Thanks Ben" the militia member muttered sincerely, and glanced around to take stock of the situation. Most of the other militia members were either trying to keep the civilians in order and calm, staring at the wrecked church down the street, or both.

The asari in particular was staring at it with some shock, then cringed a bit as she thought of something. "Jeez, well... The ship was basically done for anyway, and whoever that was definitely needed to be taken out" the asari said, the 'but' already audible in her tone. "Though... You should be a little more careful about collateral, Ben; if you did that kind of thing at home, and someone innocent was in there, they'd probably be dead, with no coming back to life like here" the alien went on, though her tone was not too harsh.

"But there's no changing what's already done" the asari added in a semi-dismissive tone, to acknowledge the pointlessness in continuing to berate the young hero. "Now it's time for our job; figuring out where to keep these people safe" the asari thought out loud, referring to herself and the other militia members.

"We can still ask for things at the library to help us out, but it's also the most obvious target" Thomas said, walking over from where he'd been with a somewhat exhausted look. "We could pick any building around here and just hide out where it's less conspicuous" the young wizard suggested.

"Rean!" Herc shouted as the grenade killed his friend, the Demi God's mind was just going: "What now?" He could see that Kelsey was going back inside the building to deal with the demonic Jackson. But it didn't concern him in the slightest so- "Oh right, he's going to be somewhere else in the city." Hercules then said face-palming because he just remembered how respawning worked in the city.

"Well I don't have any other options, plus the library's gonna be out of the question so I can't wait for Rean there either. Not that things will be better once I find him anyway." Herc then sighed in irritation and then went down the pathway hopefully shifting to where Rean was.

Riptide looked uncomfortable for a moment, then transformed back into Ben. Ben winced as the asari pointed out how Ben needed to be more careful or he could seriously hurt or kill someone innocent.

"I... yeah. You're right. That was dumb," Ben muttered. "I... I just... yeah..." he murmured, looking a little guilty. "I should be more careful..."

He sighed, putting his hands behind his head.

"Being a hero's tough... thinking on the fly like I'm used to only gets you so far..." he admitted. "Maybe I should've learned that before the City Knights tore itself apart."

Even though it was obviously not anything more than a diversion, the noisemaker arrow instantly grabbed Caboose's attention. He started paying attention exclusively to where it had come from, even diverting his aim to instead shoot towards the sounds.

Luckily, Freckles still had some brain cells. "The fake Garrett is still moving," the gun said loudly enough for the real deal to hear. "It is recommended to dispatch him immediately."

"And I will fight whatever is over there, when it shows itself!" Caboose added talking about the noisemaker.

thunder child wrecksite

I did the closest equivalent of panting for a few seconds, trying to get out the last little bits of terror I'd been repressing until now. Ground. Safety. Not flying. Good. Thank god. Yes.

...Right, I was a ghost again.

Well...if the deal was done, then surely that meant I could turn it off and on, so to speak? I may as well try it now, while there was nothing around. Hopefully it'd take less time than learning how to speak again. How hard could it be, it was literally a god-given power. I took the locket in one hand; it'd begun glowing gold again, apart from a small hairline fracture in the center. For a moment I ran my thumb over it, and then closed my eyes, trying to concentrate. Maybe if I pictured something like...

Like an overwhelming melody line receding into ambiance.

A blanket of pink flame emerged and then gently receded in a spiraling motion into the locket, leaving me standing there, an alive human. I opened my eyes, confirming what I'd already felt, and let the now seemingly-normal locket rest in place.

"Somewhere sturdy'd probably be good," I offered, glancing first at a tired Thomas and then what buildings stood around the crowd. "There'll be maybe a guy or two not stopped by it, I'm not confident that Debris Guy will stay down, but it might slow down others. Like...there." I pointed to a large house that looked like it'd be mostly concrete. "Think it's big enough?"

"I don't get it though..." I mumbled to myself, off-topic, looking at the air. "I'm not..."

Down the street from the Thunder Child wreckage

As Ben spoke, Thomas glanced over, with this expression on his face like he wanted to make some comment, but thought better of it. The asari however did make a comment. "I think it's possible to think on your feet and be careful at the same time" the asari told Ben, then she and other militia members looked to the large house that Lewis pointed out. "We've got a lot of people, and should be ready to take on more; you think they'll all fit in there?" the blue skinned alien responded, walking over towards the front side of the house.

"I'm going to check on Louie; maybe he'll wake up now" Thomas said, moving back to where he'd left the unconscious pokemon trainer.

Ben nodded solemnly at the asari.

"Yeah..." he murmured, looking at his feet for a moment before looking back up once Thomas said he was going to check on Louie.

"I'm coming too. I feel responsible for this. My team. Ah, geez, now I'm worried about the other knights. Rean, Hercules... I kinda ditched them back there..." he murmured, groaning a little and following Thomas to see how Louie was doing.

"Well I was asking you first, but. Hm..." I looked again between the crowd and the building. Sure it was a relatively big building, but it was also a big crowd with the potential to grow. "...I guess it might be hard to squeeze them in just the indoor space...maybe if you sat some in the outside yard, since it's largely walled off, and pray nothing comes from above, and someone's bound to grumble about why can't they be one of the folks inside. If y'all do get other people it'll get even more cramped, but I don't see anywhere both bigger and not precarious-looking, so." This would be easier if I could shit out a full-sized manor with minimal regard for physics here, but c'est la vie.

I glanced at Ben and Thomas going off to check one apparently still unconscious pokémon trainer, and then back at the militia alien. "...Sorry, could you excuse me?" I asked, before jogging off after them.

Outside a large manor

"Hey, Louie, you waking up yet?" Thomas said, patting his hand against Louie's head a couple times, to which the trainer slowly roused and glanced around, clearly in a confused and still somewhat dazed state.

"I-I'm up, uh... What happened?" Louie muttered, sitting up with some difficulty and looking around.

"We're safe- for the moment. Got rid of all the fakes around here; the ship got wrecked though" Thomas said, glancing down the street, only to see the wreckage had shifted away now. "We might have found a place to hide. Can you get up? Here, take another potion if you're feeling woozy" the young wizard added, getting another healing potion from his bag of holding.

"Hide? I... Wait, I gotta find the rest of my team" Louie insisted, starting to get up and looking a bit more focused. "Goldeneye, and Pecha, and Nimbus" the trainer elaborated as he got to his feet, then staggered, being caught by Thomas.

"Well you're going to need to be able to walk first" Thomas pointed out, shoving the healing potion into Louie's hands.

Meanwhile, the asari tested the gate at the front of the manor, rattling the lock briefly. "Hello?! Anyone in there?!" the asari called towards the house, then waited a few moments. She glanced at Lewis, then was about to start climbing over the gate, when the front door opened, and Lady Valentina stepped out.

"What brings you here? We've no interest in visitors" Lady Valentina said.

"Our ship just crashed, and we've got a bunch of people here trying to stay safe from the evil copies; we'd like to hide here" the asari explained.

"Evil copies?" Valentina asked simply.

"Uh... Yeah, there's like an evil copy of every person in the city today; haven't you noticed?" the asari replied.

"Copies of all of us? Well, I guess that would explain the fighting we've been hearing" Lady Valentina thought out loud, idly tapping her staff on the front step. "So you've checked everyone you have to ensure they are not themselves copies?" the sorceress asked, in a rhetorical fashion.

"... Not, as such, no" the asari hesitantly admitted.

"Then how are we supposed to trust you to come inside?" Lady Valentina asked more seriously.

"Well everyone in the city has a better chance if we work together; you're not just gonna leave all these people out here to fend for themselves, are you? I'm not asking you to even help protect them, just, let us in" the asari argued.

In a warehouse

Garrett had a bit of distance to cover first since his copy was actively fleeing, so he wasn't immediately on top of his fake; especially if he were creeping silently. In the time he was taking, the fake Garrett managed to pull the arrow out from his side, then get up and draw his dagger, getting ready to make a surprise attack on the real Garrett in retaliation.

However, Mel had recovered at this point, and was watching Garrett creeping along on top of the boxes; then she had a genre savvy epiphany. Moving over to one side of the warehouse, Mel spoke up, in a way where it sounded like she was trying to be quiet, "wait! If he's over there, why are you sneaking this way?!"

The fake Garrett turned his attention that way, thinking maybe that the real Garrett was actually going around to ambush from the side; that gave the real Garrett the opening to lean over the edge of the box and shoot down into his counterpart. The arrow went in at the top of the right shoulder, and went deep, the tip stabbing into the fake's heart. The fake Garrett let out a surprised, "gah!?" as he staggered, then fell back against the box on the other side of the gap, barely sitting up as he slumped there. "... Are you... Proud of yourself..? And your friends..?" the fake Garrett wheezed, looking up at the real Garrett. "You shouldn't..." the copy muttered weakly, shaking his head a little, then dying, and going limp.

"... Did it work?" Mel asked from the side, back to her normal tone.
