And now he was looking at the ship. Makoto could tell by Joker's body language that this was no longer a form of entertainment to him. This was getting personal. And who knew what kind of firepower he had available to him today?
"Rex might survive by waiting him out, but I'm worried about people caught in the crossfire now," she said, taking Cole's hand. "The Militia showing their force like this is making him way less predictable. At least Rex was distracting him from running off to cause trouble." Two appeared, evidently safe today. Makoto wasn't sure what had happened to her the day before, since they were separated before the arcade battle had concluded. "Oh, hey. We're, um....waiting things out." She went back to looking out the window, watching as the airship readied its weapons. It was powerful, but also a massive target. Joker knew exactly how to get to places where he shouldn't be and sabotage things. She glanced at Ben trying to activate his watch to help and sighed.
"Look, that's my responsibility out there. If it escalates beyond what Rex can handle then I will deal with it. He's after me anyway." The less people got entangled in this conflict, the better.

"Right." Herc agreed when Caboose suggested that they should share the information with everyone else. "But we may need to careful on how we do this. There'll be clones of our friends all around us." He then added cautiously "Though I'm not sure it'll be ALL our friends though. If it's anything like the previous day, it'll just be the one copy meaning it could be just about anyone who will be coming after us."
Speaking of the devil, Two was at the front of the Library at the window with Cole and Makoto and Ben had returned with Louie now in tow. "Come on Caboose." Herc said beckoning the Sim Trooper to follow him again to walk over to where the others were.
Outside the library — Cockfight
Ren was glad Rex couldn't just summon a pair of metal wings, and was excited to see just how much he could do. Rex was naturally happy to show off. Within reason, of course. There was no way he would show his full deck unless it was absolutely necessary. Ok so maybe he wanted to drag out the fight just a little.
Speaking of, the militia ship turned away from the action so Rex gave them a thumbs up. They still had their guns ready, which was a little distracting but he could work with that. Hopefully Ren and more importantly, his persona would still be on board with the gentlemen's duel.
"Something like that, we work together. But now they are not going to shoot. So you can't use them as an excuse not to fight me" Rex said, sounding slightly more smug than usual. "Anyway, where were we? Oh right, it's my turn!"
He snapped his fingers as he "remembered" what they were there to do. And just as quickly his hand turned into the giant cannon that was basically his go-to move before getting in range. He loaded it, leaving a hole in the ground, and chucked a human-sized ball of earth in Ren's direction.
"You can cry uncle whenever you are ready, dude"
Outside the Library
Huh, they weren't shooting at him yet. Strange... Joker focused on Rex again. So he had the power to tell them what to do? How unexpected.
"An excuse? No, I just didn't want to have to dismantle you and your friends up there." Rex's arm created a giant metal bazooka of sorts, and then fired a chunk of pavement at him. Joker tilted his head and stayed exactly where he was. As soon as the projectile was about to strike him, it slammed into his Tetrakarn shield instead. The magic field shattered, but the earth bullet was reflected back in Rex's direction at the same speed it was fired. "It's my turn now! Eiagon." While Rex was hopefully distracted with that, Ren snapped his fingers to match him. Arsene laughed and launched a concentrated twisted black and red fireball at Rex, cursed energy that would continue to "eat away" at the target for a few seconds after it touched them.

Cole glanced over his shoulder at Ben, then back out the window. "Ben, it's going to be all right. I think Rex can win this fight without us...but we are right here and we can help if he does need us. But if he doesn't, then we should rest. There are more people like this that could become threats." He looked at Two a moment, glancing between her and Makoto, then just turned back, keeping hold of Makoto's hand and squeezing it as reassuringly as he could.
The Miss Tairee copy looked at Ben, seeming to be in thought for a bit, then glanced over to her holographic screen and tapped a few buttons. "... Yes, there is a way" the Miss Tairee copy said, a bit mathimatically.
"Huh? Well then what is it?!" Louie insisted, standing up.
"A voice activated pass code from the omnitrix's creator" the Miss Tairee copy answered.
"Oh. Well, shoot" Louie muttered, disheartened.
Nimbus let out a chirp, and flew himself against the side of Louie's bag of holding.
"Huh? What's up, Nimbus? What are you..." Louie trailed off as it clicked with him. "Wait a minute, you can make like, anything out of thin air! So how about a recording of the guy saying the pass code?" the trainer requested.
The Miss Tairee copy looked to the holographic screen again for a moment, let out a little sigh, then pressed a few buttons. "Very well" the Miss Tairee copy muttered a bit distantly, and there was a blur nearby Ben and Louie as a simple little audio playing device appeared.
Meanwhile over at the side of the lobby, Fastanook glanced over at Makoto with a somewhat incredulous expression, and muttered, "your responsibility?" The gremlin then shook his head. "Look now; if Rex wants to put himself in danger, that's one thing, but if other people are going to get hurt, then we're going to get involved" Fastanook reminded the Phantom Thief.
"Yes, my responsibility. He wants me dead first. There was no one else in his way to get hurt until you guys parked a gunship over his head," Makoto said to Fastanook. He could wear a badge all he wanted but at the end of the day, the Militia were not the police and she was not a civilian. She refused to think that way anymore. She still held onto Cole's hand, but it was clear that she was getting angrier. If they wanted to "handle" a thread, she thought they might at least ask for advice before pulling out their biggest guns. There was a giant library of knowledge to abuse, after all.
"The more you point that thing at him, the more likely he's going to want to ruin it just to piss you off, or maybe lead you on a chase around the City as he murders anyone he can get his hands on." She turned back in time to watch Joker reflect Rex's slam cannon ammo. That was a dangerous spell and she hadn't even realized that he possessed it until now.
"Sometimes the solution to a problem isn't to try and turn it into a smear on the pavement the second it shows up."
Ben glanced back at his watch, then off to the side as a small audio device appeared beside him. He snatched it quickly, looking it over, before putting it next to the Omnitrix and pressing the button.
At once a sharp, raspy voice spoke out from the speaker of the device:
"Access Master Control!" it exclaimed. The Omnitrix reacted immediately, turning green and beeping loudly, seeming to shift through Ben's alien arsenal on its own, before humming softly and returning seemingly to normal, ready for action.
"And so that turned off the cooldown? Cool, thanks!" Ben told her, putting the device inside his bag of holding. He then looked between Cole and Makoto, both of whom were insisting Ben not get involved, because Rex could handle it by himself and it was Makoto's responsibility. Ben furrowed his brow.
"I'm with Fastanook on this one," Ben insisted. "A hero doesn't let innocent people get hurt. These evil clones are gonna attack people who didn't do anything wrong. And the longer we leave them alone to fulfill peoples' responsibility, the longer they stay around to keep hurting people who can't protect themselves!"
Ben frowned deeper, readying the Omnitrix.
"He's gonna murder people no matter what we do. Are we gonna keep letting him do it by just standing there and watching Rex fight and maybe lose? Or are we gonna stop him right here and right now, to protect everyone in the City?" Ben asked.
"Ben, the door is right there," Cole pointed out, turning a bit to look at him. "It would take only an instant to get out there and join the fight if Rex were in true danger, but for now, he has it under control." He grimaced slightly. "Honestly, Rex can take care of himself, and Makoto is here to watch him and she is powerful enough to take care of him as well. It would truly be a more prudent use of your time...and the militia's, for that matter...to be in the rest of the city, helping people who aren't able to fight back against the...the copies, like these two can."
He winced slightly. "Besides, Ben...you have someone out there as well, since everyone does. And apparently, it will be someone you care about. Maybe you should...try to find them, instead."
Herc walked over to where Ben was, he was going to tell him about what he and Caboose had just learnt but he was in the middle of a conversation with Makoto and Cole and that conversation happened to be about Joker, he didn't catch every single bit of the conversation he had with them but he just about heard that if he didn't attack now, innocent people wouldn't be spared. Cole was clearly not having any of this and was insisting that he find the copy that would be going after him.
"Cole, I think I will handle this." Hercules said to the toddler child, nodding towards Ben indicating that he would explain the day's theme much better to him. He then turned to the latter walking a bit away from him and then gestured him to come over to where he was. "Come over here, Ben."
Once Ben had come over to him, Herc then asked in a low: "I take it that's supposed to be one of the copies that we are meant to be facing today?" He then pointed to the window where the battle with Rex and Joker was to illustrate his point. "I think we are going to be dealing with just one of our friends today. It's not a case of how many we face, I think it's more of a case of which of our friends do we have a close bond with and who will come after us."
"Oooooor we can just tell everyone about this without being careful!" Caboose responded to Hercules, not seeing the value in being careful. He had almost been fried to death yesterday, there was no way today could be worse! "Yeah, Two's right there! Let's just tell her."
Following the mythical hero to where Two was gathered with several others, the sim trooper greeted the intoner happily. "Hey Two! I completely lost you yesterday, huh?" he said sheepishly. "Well, today I found you! And I also found Cent!" He gestured to where her disciple was lurking. "Oh yeah, and he might want to kill you, I don't know."
Peering in through the windows all over the library, Washington could easily pick out Caboose. While he was unsure why the blue team member was wearing red, there was no mistaking that armor and helmet... after all, Wash was the one who made that helmet for him. Good times.
Still, even if he found him, that library was bad news for his mission. Couldn't attack Caboose in there, after all. And he didn't like his odds in a straight up fight, either. Rather than enter and let his presence be noticed, the former freelancer elected to fall back. He'd watch the library carefully. Once his teammate was outside, he could try to go in for a sneaky kill.
What litle colour there was returned to Rick's face as "I guess I owe you one," he said to his grandson, shooting the most cursory of nods at Miss Tairee by way of thanks. "So, what's - I mean n-now that..."
"We're fighting our friends, Rick." said Morty, looking around at the impromptu war councils that were springin up around them. "Or, like, loved ones? I dunno... Rick? Rick?"
Rick had pushed his way past a few strangers, who gave him dirty looks, and plopped down in a chair not far from Hercules and Ben. "Sorry, I've been delirious passed out from pain this entire morning, can-can someone with some actual combat experience fill me in?"
From his expression and body language, especially folding his arms, it was clear that Fastanook wasn't swayed by what Makoto and Cole said. However, the gremlin looked more confused than angered, with his ears down to either side. "Are you intentionally misunderstanding me?" Fastanook asked towards Makoto, in an actually kind of serious tone. "Because, what you seem to think we're doing, and what we're actually doing, are two very different things" the gremlin explained.
"The Thunder Child isn't going to go chasing after him, because her orders are to stay here. Because the library is the most likely place for scared civilians running away from hostiles to go, so it's the place that's most important to keep safe; to make sure that those people don't just get killed right outside the doors before they could get inside" Fastanook elaborated further.
Louie had followed Ben over, and had his face screwed up in thought. "Wait, I'm confused; as long as nobody else is getting hurt, then what's wrong with Rex fighting that guy alone?" Louie asked.
"Yes, as long as nobody else is getting hurt. I already said that part clearly, which is why I'm wondering why she took what I said as so different than what I actually said" Fastanook answered Louie, pointing his thumb at Makoto. "And as for you, kid" the gremlin continued, turning his attention to Cole and saying, "we do have people out in the city trying to help others. The ship can only be in one place at a time, so why not have it be in the most important place?"
Then someone else poked Makoto in the back of her leg to get her attention. Veela stood there, ears going back in a more outright aggressive expression. "And if it is your responsibility, then why is that guy taking care of it?" Veela pointed out in a sarcastic sort of tone, pointing out the windows at Rex.
"Veela, come on, it doesn't help us to be outright rude here" Fastanook muttered, trying to get the other gremlin to see reason.
People kept wanting to force their way into her problems. She could understand the logic Fastanook was using well enough. Civilians that qanted to hide here would need a clear path to the library, and yet it still didn't sit well with Makoto. There were too many people watching a conflict that she was uncomfortable enough having to deal with in public. Watching Joker fight Rex wasn't easy, and she certainly didn't need any more comments about it. She gave Veela an almost blank stare in response to her sarcasm, trying to cover up how defensive the entire situation made her. It didn't work that well. She wanted to either punch something or hide out somewhere until it was all taken care of. Harmless blue flames covered her for a second as her outfit changed to her leather and metal costume, he iron mask settling over her face.
"...Because he offered to do it for me," she said, careful with the way she spoke. It was impossible to keep the tinge of anger out of her voice though. She let go of Cole's hand and headed back to the couch, her jaw tight. She couldn't think straight right now.
Outside the library — Let's hope nobody saw that
So Ren also had a shield of his own. And not just that, but it somehow reflected Rex's projectile back at him. Rex jumped out of the way, "gracefully" letting the chunk of pavement smash against whatever was on its way. He looked back at the crowd watching from inside the library and tried to give a reassuring smile—which across as more nervous than anything else. Makoto seemed very worried about this whole thing and couldn't keep watching. Maybe he should have asked her to give her some tips beforehand. Oh well, it's not like improvisation was a skill he lacked and winning without previous knowledge of his enemy would make him look a lot cooler.
But just because Rex was feeling embarrassed that didn't mean he was out of trouble just yet. He built his smack hands to brace for the fireball coming his way. he expected just a bit of heat for a few seconds before definitely catching Ren unprepared with a counterattack of his own but this was starting to really hurt. Like, more than regular fire anyway. Something highly acidic was probably closer to was he was feeling.
"Ow ow ow! What is this even made of?!"

Gon was able to speak to Mo-gyeong right away after she arrived. But when he started to ask questions regarding her daughter or if she got away from the hired assassins sent by Ventura Holdings, she started to give half-truths or mention that she can’t remember.
While the assassin can understand that her daughter’s death scares her, the man wondered how she was able to get away considering that she mainly worked in finances...
“Better ask her...” Gon murmured.
"Curse-based magic," Joker explained, taking note of Rex's mechanical hands. A strong physical attacker, then. "It tends to linger. Don't tell me it's too much for you?" The magic flames faded away a few seconds later. Arsene summoned another red and black ember and tossed the Eiagon at Rex's feet. "You going to stay way over there or come a little closer?"

Veela reflexively leaped backwards and her fur standing up a bit as Makoto was suddenly engulfed in flames. Once it was clear that Makoto was just leaving though, Veela just watched, her fur slowly un-poofing. "She couldn't have hurt you in here anyway" Fastanook said to the other gremlin.
"I-I know that! She just, startled me! That's all!" Veela insisted in a defensive, slightly embarrassed tone.
Ben got pulled a little bit away from the other group as Cole and Hercules tried to address him and talk some sense into him. When Cole and Hercules pointed out that Ben would have a close friend he would have to deal with, Ben froze.
He stood there silently for a moment, an uneasy expression on his face. He stayed silent for an almost uncomfortable amount of time.
He then stood up more straight, seeming to compose himself, looking out the window towards the fight.
"All right, let's go take care of this dork," Ben said, seemingly ignoring everything either of them said, also speaking unusually quickly and sounding too much like he was trying to gloss something over. "Who's with me? We ready to be heroes and fight bad guys?" Ben asked, readying his Omnitrix.
Cole let out a slightly exasperated sigh, watching as everyone else seemed like they were already on the verge of having nervous breakdowns over everything. "Sometimes I miss being able to see into people, and sometimes I don't," he said a bit flatly, before wandering after Makoto.
"It's going to be okay, Makoto," he said, a bit more gently. "This will be over soon enough, we'll all be going home. And...you and Rex have...something worked out, don't you? Or at least, he talked of there being something that would involve you in the future, a couple days ago...?"
Makoto glanced back at Ben trying to rally more people into fighting Joker, and then went back to taking slow breaths. There wasn't a point in arguing about this, she knew she was just being protective over a person that wasn't even real. But he sounded and acted real, and there were all just going to put him down because she was too spineless to do it herself. She should have just gotten it over with, like ripping a bandage off. Her fists were clenched tightly when Cole reached her again, and she tried to organize herself to at least sound coherent to him.
"Y-yeah, soon..." Oh, so he knew about the deal? Or maybe he didn't know the details of it. She hesitated before continuing on. "I took up a challenge. I didn't want us to never see each other again, but the deal I was offered needed Rex to forget everything about me. And everything we did together here." It wasn't fair, after all the other times his life was forced to restart. "I...argued with them so that I would forget instead. I wanted to sacrifice something for him for once."
"Oh." Cole blinked a few times, clearly that wasn't exactly the answer he was expecting to hear back. He tilted his head, squinting slightly as though trying to suss out some sort of answer for that. Finally though, he just shrugged slightly. "That might be for the best anyway. There is a lot about this place that would be nice to forget, and Rex is...Rex. He doesn't seem capable of being anything but Rex. If you liked him here, you'll like him again if you meet him later, even if you don't remember this."
"He sounds kind of scared, doesn't he?" Caboose remarked casually, referring to Ben's reaction to the theme of the day. Not that he could tell why, but he just had the general feeling that that was what the kid felt right now. "I wonder why?"
No sooner did Herc tell Ben about this new development he suddenly had a change in his tone and mannerisms and was hurriedly going at his Omintrix and quite frankly he was acting a little strange even by his standards. Hercules quickly noticed this and then gently put both hands on his shoulders and had turn back around to face him. "Ben are you feeling alright? You are acting...odd. Do you need to sit down? Can I get you anything from Miss Tairee?" Herc then asked his friend.
He knew Ben wouldn't act like this so something was clearly up with him and Herc was pretty much put off guard by this. What was he so worried about?
Hercules turned Ben towards him and asked if he was okay and if he needed anything. Ben ducked out of Hercules' grip and turned back towards the fight, readying the Omnitrix.
"Nope! Don't need anything! Just gonna fight evil like always, save the day and all that. Yup. Cause that's what heroes do. Now c'mon, let's go," Ben insisted, still bluntly and quickly, going through his watch.
"Now which one of these is gonna help the most? Maybe Stinkfly? Maybe Heatblast? Or Diamondhead?" he asked, thinking out loud more loudly than he would normally. Almost like he was trying to tune something out.
