Well, the latest chapter sure is a punch in the gut.
I learned about this after Linkara was roped into covering the first volume for one of his goofy paid reviews.
I don't get it.
So, the whole point of this story is about the mysterious world of eating shit found in the dungeon...but there's a guidebook about what dungeon-shit is edible? So they're not the first people experimenting with this, with the risks and uncertainty involved, they're just some guys making faces at their fried basilisk bladder despite the book saying it's perfectly safe and tasty?
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984
You're missing the point. It's not a story of a dungeon culinary guidebook at all (there isn't any, the asides are just a way for the author to show what's been eaten in a way familiar to people, which is like an entry in a cookbook) — it's a story of a bunch of broke adventurers forced to eat dungeon fauna if that's what it'll take to make it down and rescue one of their friends.
And I think it's implied that Senshi is the only one with real experience, ahem, foraging for "ingredients".

Yeah, Senshi seems like he's kind of a weirdo, honestly. He apparently lives down in the Dungeon to the point where he has a bunch of base camps set up, routinely goes through the first few levels on his own to buy spices so he can eat more monsters, etc.
The characters are a little archetypal so far, but it's fun, and surprisingly clever (who would think to make the snake the real head of the basilisk, or living armor a kind of mollusc?).
It's been fun.Yeah, the main reason I like this series is how interestingly the author reinvents or rationalizes how traditional RPG monsters work and how a traditional multilevel underground dungeon functions in a more grounded reality. Mimics as a sort of trapdoor spider/hermit crab? That's brilliant.

Hm, so how far is the scanlation currently? I'm nearing the end of volume 4 ( Red Dragon 6), but I'm reading in Japanese.
...speaking of, I cannot be the only one who ships Marcille and Pharin, can I? Can I?
It's been fun.Completely caught up. Next chapter in October.
Also, no, you're most definitely not alone.
They're just... very cute. And even with the amount of blushing that people do in this manga whenever anything happens, it seems like they do it a lot looking at each other.
Also that exchange about sleeping together in the inn they borrowed after defeating the dragon.
It's been fun.And then on to Red Dragon 7.
Well.
That didn't last very long, did it.
It's been fun.Ehh... I interpret Marcille and Farlyn as very close BF Fs. I know my sisters often shared beds with their girlfriends when they had a sleepover.
I think there is too much pressure nowadays to make everything eros instead of passionate philo.
Well, while I think it works (and is adorable) either way, until we get a dungeon crawling manga with a textual romantic LGBT couple I'll have to make do with hints and wishful thinking.
Unrelatedly, these past few chapters have been fantastic for use of the meal introducing subtitles for jokes. From Pharin and Worg Skeletons, contents: 1 person's worth of human bones to Senshi's dragon ham subtitles rolling along with the ham itself, I've been doing a lot of chuckling.
It's been fun.Okay then, wow. Can someone explain to me why Cabroux (Kaburu, whatever his name is) has such a vengeance hard-on for Laios and Pharin? He just assumes they're black market masterminds or something?
Also, I want Pharin back... poor summer child, we barely knew ye!
It's been fun.He has a negative way of looking at people. He thinks Laius and Farlyn giving gold to an injured comrade is just a front for funding the black market, instead of them just being good guys who are fooled into it.
Recent chapters made gim reconsider, though.
Fair, fair. I'll need to track down the scanlations once I'm done with the physical volume 5, since finding manga here outside of the published volumes is hard.
That said, Kabru and his team are... not very observant, are they.
It's been fun.Scans for volume 5 extra is out. In which Laius discovers his childhood is a lie.
Kabru is a mix of naive, incredibly cynical, and almost megalomaniacally self-centered. He believes Laius and Farlyn are bad people, because there are no such thing as good people, except for himself of course (though he might not even think that, maybe he thinks everyone is bad but he'll just look out for number one). Any and every action they do is viewed through a lens of what possible evil motivations or intent there might be behind it. He's very Black-and-White Morality, saying that all dungeons and all monsters must be wiped out, despite the fact that dungeons and monsters play some ecological role in this magical world.
His view on Laius and Farlyn may have been slightly improved, or at least clarified, after he actually met Laius and spoke with him, but he still looks down on them anyway, because he believes that he's the only one who is worthy of controlling, then destroying, the dungeon.
In other news, I really like the Eastern party, especially the oni girl. She's adorable.
I've read up to published volume 5 (when they meet Shuro's party and Kabru), so I'll need to keep reading when I can.
I also want more Farin (for more Farin and Marcelle cuteness).
It's been fun.I don't think Kabru is that bad, quite opposite actually. It's pretty obvious he has much more experience fighting humans then monsters, which does give his cynicism some credibility, maybe even lot.
Plus he actually quickly corrected himself very quickly after meeting Laius and his person, and even helped him out with Sureu while pushing all right button, which all show how well he understand human nature.
He always expects worst from people, yet he is observant enough figure when they are not that bad.
I find it interesting that (if I recall right) Shuro's party comments among themselves that their boss's name is actually Tojiro or so on, it's just that Laios and his party can't or don't pronounce it correctly.
It's been fun.Yeah, I like how it's basically reverse Engrish.
Newly (translated) chapter!
Well, that was a narrowly-avoided TPK there, and only because Laius was forced to get serious. But man, 8 killed... It's a good thing there are casters on the other parties. Poor Marcille though, I guess no one will trust her now with Resurrection because of what she did.
Kabru does bring a valid point though. If the dungeon works on a "You killed it, you own it" way of working, what WILL happen if Laius finally conquers the dungeon?
Turn it into a gourmet restaurant, with very fresh ingredients. Or a zoo. Or a visitor-friendly natural reserve.
He will open a huge restaurant in the dungeon with Senshi as the head chef, and the entire dungeon as a farm supplying ingredients.

Give the God Eater game thread some love!So we return to the usual episodic comedy format. Damn, this chapter is hilarious. Lol at Western art Marcille and retarded Laius.
Yeah, Laius will really need to show how observant he is of his party members.
How'd Laius become Laois? ._.
