It does seem to air only on Sundays.

Speaking of which, I saw "#SuperWho?" recently. Probably the episode I thought was the weakest so far, a lot of it due to how it interpreted Superman.

Yeah that interpretation irked me a bit too. I was also mildly annoyed at how Kara lacks any of her science smarts just so that they could do the joke of where Karen says a sciency thing and Kara's like, whaaaaaa?

I liked the next episode quite a bit, even if it didn't make that much sense for literally all the girls except for Diana to be laughing at the meanspirited videos. I wouldn't have expected Karen to laugh, for one. But I dig this iteration of Livewire. Her being a You Tuber who posts embarrassing videos is a pretty good modern high school take on her usual shock jock role.

[up] Eh. I don’t know. Batman being a jerk to other characters wouldn’t be out of character. Sure he will have a heart of gold deep inside, but still a jerk nonetheless.

And like everybody else, yeah I do not like the whole Smug Super approach with Superman either. I mean such characterization work if the series is a full on parody series (like Teen Titans Go) or if there is some kind of red kryptonite effecting him to have him be such a tool (like in Batman The Brave and The Bold). The one defining character trait with Superman is that he is a boy scout and an overall nice guy; and while he does have his moments of cockiness, its not to the point where he is a self absorbed glory hound.

Yeah I take back my previous comment regarding Hal’s portrayal being character assassination; at least there is some truth to him being a cassanova wannabe.

Also now I am really missing how Superman and Supergirl relationship was portrayed in Justice League Action. Especially with the episode Keeping Up With the Kryptonians.

@Death Apprentice

I know right? A motherfucking alien teenager who grew up on a planet with science so advance that it wouldn’t be out of place with Earth tech in the 30th Century and have two scientist parents which means, given the whole designer baby approach with Kryptonian culture, Kara herself is destined for science . . . yet couldn’t grasp Earth’s chemistry in this show (which would be easy for her).

[up](x4) I'm not well-versed in modern Supergirl or Krypton, but doesn't Krypton have an education system that's more advanced than anything on Earth? Even if Kara was a terrible student, shouldn't she be smarter than everyone else in her school? Or maybe that's just pre-Crisis Krypton.

[up] That logic still applies here and even more show with the whole post Crisis retcon that Krypton’s society is all about designer babies where Kryptoninas are predetermined as either being soldiers, public officials, scientists, artists, etc.

And as mention in my previous comment, she has two parents who are scientists (I think her mother is a scientist though IIRC she is more of a public official); so there is a good chance that she will end up being a science kid herself.

So they are forcing Kara more into the dumb muscle/idiot hero character then.

Cause yeah logically she shouldn't be reacting to science talk like its another language.

She's headstrong & tempermental but that shouldn't mean she's a dumbass.

That really stinks. Even if Kara is characterized very differently in this iteration, it would have added a nice layer for her to still be very good at science due to growing up on Krypton. (Also I think in the comics at least, she was the youngest member of the Science Guild. So she was a genius even by Kryptonian standards.) I really didn't need her to be Dumb Muscle... oh well. I find it really disappointing cuz even Babs, who also has a personality change into someone really hyperactive, gets to retain her general comics self smarts, and it makes her character pretty interesting, IMO? So why can't Kara retain her smarts? Even the CW show acknowledged her smarts by having flashback teenage Kara point out that she learned calculus when she was 4.

I kinda thought it was a bit of an overreaction when someone on this forum, can't remember who, mentioned that all the guys were characterized as pretty incompetent or jerks, but... yeah, after the introduction of Superman in this iteration, that is what's happening, isn't it? That's honestly kind of insulting, IMO. It implies that the female heroes can't seem competent without the male heroes being various levels of incompetent, which isn't cool.

Oh dear imagine if Aquaman & Mera showed up.

They might portray their relationship as being on the rocks & that the blame for it primarily goes to Arthur.

It be even worse if Arthur is made to be against Atlantis/Land relations while Mera is all for it which is generally a complete reversal of the characters beliefs.

Faust's thing is boxing characters into a specific archetype. You see it in Milky Way and the Galaxy and Friendship is Magic. I think it makes for funny characters and dynamics, but it has its detriments as well. Kara can be a jock but not a sciency jock.

I feel like Kara is less a jock and more a... IDK, cool bad girl or something. But yeah, that really is Faust's thing, I suppose. She does manage to make even the most tired archetypes interesting, but her characters never do break out of them.

Yeah, I wasn't pleased with Superman episode. At this point I will settle for charismatic male super villain, like maybe Riddler or Rogues. I do wonder how heroines outside of the SHG team will be portrayed.

Also, what was up with statement that Kara is actually older than Clark if it wasn't for stasis? Was it taken from comics? Was it to make Superman feel younger without really de-aging him? Was it done to make Supergirl look better? I just don't know where are they going with this.

Livewire episode was much better. Although I think Livewire wouldn't lose so many fans if her idea of embarrassing Wonder Woman didn't involve frying her alive.

On the side note, Teen Titans Go lately announced that they will get sixth member for the summer and eventually it turned to be Bumblebee. She got a slight redesign, most notably she's purely technological now, with little arm cannons forming on her arms and shooting stingers. Seeing how Karen was more prominent in previous cartoon that Zatanna and Jessica, I wonder if there is some attempt to make her a Breakout Character.

Yep, it's definitely taken from the comics. I think that's been a thing in the comics for a while now. Also didn't Smallville use that take on her character, too? I know CW Supergirl definitely does.

[up][up][up] Kara is older than Clark as of the 1980s at latest. She was a preteen or teenager when he was a baby. That's a standard part of her character.

Well, the more you learn.

I noticed that someone listed on YMMV page girls being Unintentionally Unsympathetic in the last episode since they were at first laughing at the videos, making their humiliation feel deserved. I found this interesting because this episode has very similar plot to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S2 E23 "Ponyville Confidential" which is disliked from similar reasons - though at very least SHG tried to stop Livewire before they were humiliated so I think their episode is better.

Random question, if this show was called Marvel Super Hero Girls, who do you think should form the main team of heroes and villains?

I'm gonna be super unbiased and list my 6 favorite super heroines. So. Kamala Khan, Cindy Moon, Laura Kinney, America Chavez, Doreen Green, and Carol Danvers. (I'll think of a more serious, actually balanced in terms of powers, and also with a Badass Normal probably, team later.)

Dunno what supervillains I'd want. There's.... not really any coming to mind.

Let me think:

  • Black Cat
  • Silver Sable
  • Olivia Octavius (Doc Ock from Into the Spider-Verse)
  • Beetle (from Superior Foes of Spider-Man)
  • Yelena Belova? (Not sure if she's usually a bad guy. Probably is.)

I mean, these are Marvel girl villains I could think of at the top of my head, so...tongue

As for my picks for a hypothetical Marvel Super Hero Girls...I'm stumped. There's a lot of good ones that it's pretty hard to stick with five.

[up]x2: That's a pretty well-rounded team, Deaths Apprentice! For a Badass Normal, Kate Bishop would fit the team well as a future addition. A part of me would also appreciate Moon Girl showing up (maybe she's the Spike equivalent here).

[up]I know, right? Heck, you could do the premise using the X-Men characters alone. Stop looking at my username!

As for villains, Targetmaster Joe already made a good selection of choices (I admittedly almost forgot about Oliva Octavius as a possible pick). Perhaps I can throw in some names:

  • Enchantress (There's a college-aged version of Amora in Academy, but the comics also featured a Legacy Character named Sylvie Lushton, who was a normal Oklahoman teen before being empowered by Loki. Unlike her inspiration, she's actually good if a tad naive. I wonder if a Composite Character, with the similar hook of Loki or the original Amora empowering her, could work?)
  • Galina Nemirovsky (The 13th Crimson Dynamo in the comics, and could be the Genius Bruiser of the group.)
  • Screwball (Something about Squirrel Girl's fanatic, fourth-wall-breaking, and fun-loving nature reminded me of this possibly villainous Youtuber-gone-wrong counterpart. Especially if you're familiar with her comic-accurate depiction in Spider-Man (PS4).)
  • Minn-Erva/Minerva (The closest Evil Counterpart to Apprentice's line-up towards Carol Danvers herself, as a rivaling ace, and maybe an issue to Kamala Khan as a result.)
  • Titania (Honestly, she's a classic brute in Marvel's repertoire, so I thought she deserves a mention. Maybe she hangs around with some version of the Absorbing Man?)

That being said, the current Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors series seems to be the direct counterpart already. However, unlike the DC Super Hero Girls, its premise seems more traditional and the team line-up inverses the Two Girls to a Team idea.

[up] Thanks! And also, geez, how'd I forget about Kate Bishop?! Yeah, she'd be a great addition to the team! (Also Moon Girl being the Spike equivalent is a great idea. Plus then you get a Team Pet in Devil Dinosaur.)

And yeah, you both are right, there are a lot of good superheroines to choose from. (Which is definitely the opposite of a problem, if you ask me. grin)

Marvel Rising does seem to be Marvel's equivalent to DCSHG in that it's largely aimed at girls, but it is much less of a High School AU than DCSHG and more of a traditional superhero show, with some Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World thrown in.

For such hypothetical Marvel Super Hero Girls, obviously I would of went with something more in lines to the most mainstream characters.

  • Wasp: Who is obviously going to be the group’s Rarity given her fashionista and heiress background.
  • Storm: Who of course the group’s Applejack knowing how both tend to be the reasonable member of their respective team.
  • Captain Marvel: Who is going to be the archtypical Rainbow Dash since she is often portrayed as the tomboy who always charges into action.
  • Invisible Woman: Pretty much the group's Fluttershy by default. Damn that whole personality power theory for the Fantastic Four.
  • Jean Grey: Definitely the Twilight Sparkle of this team. I mean she is very Twilight like from being the model student at Xavier Institute (with Cyclops coming in second) to literally being the most powerful character after unlocking the Phoenix powers.
  • Scarlet Witch: Well guess she’s the Pinkie Pie of the group, which is fitting as she has always been sort of a wild card in both personality and literal powers.

If this show were Marvel Super Hero Girls here is who I would have picked:

Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel) as the Batgirl/superhero fangirl/audience surrogate/de facto main character of the group

America Chavez as the Rainbow Dash/Supergirl of the group

Gwen Stacey (Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider) who I guess could be the Rarity/Zatanna of the group.

Riri Williams (Ironheart) as the Twilight Sparkle of the group

Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) as the Pinkie Pie of the group

Daisy Johnson (Quake) as the Wonder Woman/leader of the group with the whole Amazons being replaced with members of S.H.I.E.L.D
