Meanwhile...

Eastern District

The directions that Vondal had received took him into the Eastern District, but were frustratingly vague concerning the exact directions to the "Dirty Duergar". There was a surprising dearth of passers-by for a Sunday morning, and the few he did encounter shot him scathing, dirty looks before hurrying away.

The wait was interminable, but Vondal's aimless wandering was finally interrupted by the sound of fighting - and it came from the open square to the south.

Ander looked awkwardly from side to side. "Um... sorry Bert"

Beat

"Sleep" he said as he pointed his palm at Bert.

Ander casts sleep on Bert.

For when my turn comes as I think Bert going to sleep won't modify my actions too much

Adelaide stays in place, standing her ground as she continues her engagement with Tony, glad to see the battle going well for her side. This man was clearly a superior fighter to his cohorts... and even if she could deftly avoid his first blow, he managed to land a second one on her... that coupled with his sheer resilience to withstand her two blows was more than enough for the soldier woman to respect the man before her.

Still, for all the more reason she ought to beat him... minding not the closer range, she simply adapted her grip on her glaive as she held onto her footing and once again swung her glaive by the opposite side... spinning in place to once again hit the man with the back of the staff.

Mechanics: Stay in place. Attack Tony with glaive for 1d20+5 to hit and 1d10+3 damage, then bonus action to strike the back end of the glaive for 1d20+5 to hit and 1d4+3 to hit, slashing and bludgeoning damage respectively. As a warrior in melee, I can choose to make my strikes deal nonlethal damage which I am doing currently. Additionally, due to Great Weapon Fighting Style, 1 and 2 in damage dice are rerolled once for both attacks.

COMBAT POST - OOC

Anders casts sleep: 5d8 HP of targets affected in a 20-foot radius around the target (Bert) = 23 HP.
The following targets are now unconscious:

  • Bert (6 HP remaining)
  • Adelaide (8 HP remaining)
  • Anders (9 HP)

(Daren, being a half-elf, is immune to magical sleep effects.)

Tony moves up to Daren and uses Multiattack.

  • First Attack Roll: 1d20+4 = 1+4 (Automatic miss!)
  • Second Attack Roll: 13
  • Daren's AC is 13-1 on account of the hangover = 12... which is a hit.
  • Damage: 1d8+2 = 10. Daren is now dying.

Daren's Death Saving Throw: 1d20 = 2. Strike One.

COMBAT POST - IC

Ander's sleep spell goes off, hitting Bert... and catching both himself and Adelaide in the crossfire. All three sink slowly to the ground, caught in a magical stupor.

Tony stared for a moment, shrugged, and ran over to Daren, swinging his mace wildly. The first blow missed its mark, finding only open air, but just as Daren prepared to dodge the second blow, his drink-addled reflexes failed him. He stumbled face-first into Tony's mace and crumpled into a bloody heap.

Eastern District

Miron casts sleep on Tony. 5d8 worth of HP = 27 - Tony falls asleep.

Miron brought his hand to his face, wincing at the impact, but his other hand remained free as he flipped his middle finger at Tony.

"Mama said, 'knock you out'!"

The gangster roared and held his mace high, ready to render Miron even shorter than he already was, and ran... and faltered... and stumbled over his own feet as he fell asleep in mid-charge.

"'Corpse-fondler'? I'll show you 'corpse-fondler', you sonuvabitch-" the gnome remarked, dusting his hands off - and realised that at least one of their number was now dying.

"CLERIC!"

After hearing a call for a cleric, Vondal cautiously turned a corner, seeing a few familiar faces - and a certain familiar face in the ground. He grumbled at his luck. The last thing he needed was the other patrons from the inn turning up dead, especially at a place he was at, since that pesky Dragonborn officer would likely make things more of a hassle.

"It must be divine intervention that led me to meet you lot here," Vondal said to the others as he stepped closer to the fallen male. "Care to inform me of your exploits while I tend to him? Or at least explain why these other fine gentlemen are now sprawled all over the road?"

Medicine roll: 1d20+5 = 13, beats Stabilisation DC of 10. Daren will live... for now. He remains unconscious, though.

Vondal's ministrations were enough to keep Daren from death's door - just barely.

In the meantime, Miron gave Vondal one of those looks as he walked over to Adelaide, shaking her awake, and then gave Ander a slap upside the head to rouse him.

"We were at the office when the bounty was raised, looking for the two girls from the inn yesterday. Ran into Drunk Al, a crazy old fool, who Daren thought would lead us to them, too. Then this trio of punks who were up to no good started causing trouble in the neighborhood. Tried to bluff our way through but they just didn't scare... and that's why everybody's lying down over there."

He coughed. "In a perfect world, I'd be claiming due compensation from those losers, but the lady over there seems to have beat me to it."

The woman in question was a statuesque beauty - taller than Adelaide or Ander, even. The bright blue gown that descended to her ankles was a stark contrast against her red-tinged skin, and the tip of what could only have been a tail peeked out from under its hem. A pair of nub-like horns protruded from her forehead.

There was no question that this was a tiefling, and said tiefling was currently crouched over the prostrate form of Ernie, one hand on the fallen gangster's wrist and another at his neck.

"I'm afraid I have some bad news," Vondal said as he stood up again. "This one's going to live, and no doubt talk our ears off as soon as he wakes up."

He marched over to to where the tiefling was trying to resuscitate the other man. "Excuse me, miss," he said, clearing his throat. "I happen to be an acolyte of Serena - the Lady of Pain, Mistress of Beauty, and Bride of Grooming, amongst other things. If you'd be so kind as to step aside so I can attempt to revive your... foster brother?" he asked hopefully.

"S'fine, I got this covered. Trained healer," the tiefling mumbled distractedly, her hands manipulating the fallen ruffian's head and torso in a series of complicated - and painful-looking - manoeuvres. "'Sides, Ernie ain't my brother - he ain't nothing but a hound dog, and he ain't no friend of mine."

She gave Ernie's head one final wrench, setting it back into position to the sickening sound of grinding bones, and set him back onto the ground just as the other two Bulettes woke up. "Now, these two are friends of his, on the other hand - and friends take their half-dead friends home to sleep it off, don't they, boys?"

Tony began rising groggily to his feet in protest, slurring, "No wayyy... They start-"

"Started nothin'!" She rose to her full height, towering over the gangsters. "They finished it, so be glad you've still got your nuts and that Ernie doesn't need a coffin! Now get going!"

For one tense moment, the Bulettes stared resentfully at the horned interloper, their eyes threatening violence - but the tiefling glared them down, and they departed with their now-stable friend in a fit of grumbling.

"Now that that lil' unpleasantness is over..." She turned to the party, her face still a mask of severity. "I should leave y'all to explain things to the Cracked Tooth Gang when they get here... but I can't just hang a worshipper of the Lady out to dry, and I imagine your friend here could use more than a little patching up. My place..."

She pursed her lips, unsure of herself for a fleeting moment. "Well, it's not really 'my place', and it's a little... unorthodox, but it's safe and it's available. Anyway, you can follow me, or you can stick around. Your call."

"Thank you madame, you're far too kind," Vondal said. He grabbed Daren's right arm, placing the armpit on top of his shoulder for leverage, and made a face implying that one of the other party members ought to hoist him by the left. "You seem like a woman who has her ear on the heartbeat of this city," he added. "I've come to this part of town in search of a Mistress Hanira, do you perchance know her?"

If someone helps him drag Daren then start following her if she started moving. If no one helps, then strength check to drag him along.

The tiefling looked over them from head to toe with a keen eye, her face betraying a hint of amusement - no doubt, from seeing the party's sorry state. "No sense in wasting time, then - let's go! Move first, ask questions later!"

She turned away, beckoning them down the winding street that led out of the square.

"...Right, here we are." After many, many twists and turns down dark alleys, the tiefling finally stepped out into the open street, beelining for the gaudily-decorated building across the road.

The house was fairly large by Golimar standards, nearly twice the size of the House of Loaves and Fowl. The signboard in front of it, a placard featuring the likeness of a gray dwarf doing something distinctly unsavoury with a drow and a mind flayer, proclaimed the availability of all manner of carnal delights for the appropriate fee. And when the tiefling flung the oaken double doors open, the gaudy murals within turned out to be even more risqué, their colours clashing with the couches that lined the walls, lined in black satin sheets.

As far as brothels went, this was, no doubt, a house of critically-ill repute.

The tiefling walked up to the counter and a bored-looking halfling waved her in casually, not even raising an eyebrow at the sight of the peculiar crew that came in her wake.

"What're y'all waitin' for?"

Daren was really snorting at this point. Something seemed to disturb his sleep, because he started to mumble again:

"...A...octopus and...the most adventuring girl I'll ever see?"

His head tilted to one side, what probably left his companions wondering wether he was really asleep, and if yes, what the hell was he dreaming of.

"Lady have mercy, even when he's out cold he won't shut up," Vondal observed with a grin and a slight chuckle. "Let's set him down for now," he indicated to Ander a nearby couch that they should try to move him to.

"Well now, friend, I am Vondal Battlebeard, seventy-third of my line from Melvira Battlebeard herself, and acolyte of the Lady of Pain, and I come seeking Mistress Hanira," he said to the halfling. "This kind woman was helpful enough to lead me and my..." he paused for a split-second, not really sure how to describe his working relationship. "...complete strangers who I met at the inn last night and I happened to run across them getting assaulted by a roving gang."

The Dirty Duergar

"Ask 'er yerself." The halfling hoisted her thumb in the direction the horned woman. "Hey, Hani! Do your customers usually look like that before you've gone to work on them?"

If the tiefling could've flushed an even deeper shade of red than she already was, she would've. "Dammit, Maggie, you know I ain't that kinda girl!" She turned to the party - more specifically, to Vondal - and her voice took on a more formal inflection. "Apologies for the deception, honoured brother. I am Hanira, daughter of a line not worth mentioning, fellow servant of the Queen of Suffering, and - well, uh, this is awkward."

Her formal demeanour cracked as she waved her hands frantically, trying to change the subject. "Look, let's get your friend to my quarters first, okay? Something tells me this is going to be a long day."

Hanira's quarters were just as gaudily-decorated as the rest of the brothel, but it was her choice of furniture that seemed more than a little suspect - the stocks, wall-mounted manacles and torture rack looked like they'd been purchased second-hand from the City Guard, and looked more than a little incongruous alongside the rest of the bedroom furniture. At least there was a regular bed for Daren, and a table and chairs for the rest of the adventurers.

"Right. Now that we've got a little privacy... Beauty is the Lady's domain, after all, and your friend here looks like he's been beaten with the Staff of Ugly." The tiefling laid a hand on Daren's mangled face and chanted slowly, knitting bone, sinew and flesh back together - and when she was done, she took a step back and admired her handiwork.

Hanira casts cure wounds at Level 1 on Daren, who regains 1d8+2 hp = 9 hp.

"There we are, good as new," she proclaimed, and dusted her hands off. "Now, since I've stuck my neck out for y'all, you could at least tell me - what in the hells was going on out there?"

"By the steady feet of Brandobaris..." Daren shook his head, getting up slowly. He was visibly confused and his sight was blurred. He was uncionscious and it kind of felt like he was waking up from another hangover.

He had only seen trough the dim light the vague form of a red demonic being, torture devices all over and a blur where Vondal were with his large chainmail armor, and people sitting all around him watching him. "Shit, I'm in hells, ain't I?..."

"Oops. Sorry? Where...who..." he looked around him until he sees Ander as the tiefling shifts her body to hear him speak. His face is then set. "Ander. We had that fight won, man! I-how many times did I warn you about the Sleep spell, huh? By the gods, mate! I spent only my early years with elves, I thought you'd know better about fey and it's effects than I do!"

He looked now active, jumping to his feet.

"Did we win? You guys got any loot or any identifying trinket of the bullettes? Where's Al? Man, we'd know what happened to Ned for sure!"

Adelaide for her part was facing a wall and... hitting her forehead softly against it every few second, one fist put against the innocent wall as she reflected her life choices that led her to a place such as the dirty duegar, after falling asleep in the middle of a fight by a friendly spellcaster while her companion in arms had lied about them being responsible about the very crime they meant to solve... all during her vacations as a reward for good service "The Gods must have cursed me for coming to this place... Daren... just... shush... listen for once and you'll get the gist of what is happening...."

With a deep breath and one last little hit against the wall, Adelaide turns to their host "Thanks again for the help... yes, we're trying to investigate a murder... we were looking for two gang members... female an elf and a dwarf just to ask them if they saw anything suspicious about the night of the crime..."

The Dirty Duergar
Vondal was distracted for a few moments, taking a chance to look at and appreciate the equipment on the walls. He regained his composure by the time Adelaide finished speaking.

"What went on out there, I have no idea beyond what they've said. I wasn't there for it. As for myself, though I have the same goal, the Lady guided me elsewhere. She led me north in order to seek more information on a few select subjects," he started. "There, I encountered Brother Da'nass of the Dead Trio, who was kind enough to discuss matters for a bit before directing me here. After conferring with him, and thinking more about the events that have transpired, it seems as if things are pointing to a grim conclusion."

He cleared his throat. "Barring happenstance and coincidence, that mysterious man at the inn last night is most likely responsible for the late Barrowman's beheading. And at the heart of matters is the Cult of the White Hand and the Skull of Neruok, or at least an object that they are convinced is the skull."
