Apparently, the Spanish Guitarist is a common character for the Day of the Dead, and in media set in Spain/Hispania in general. Soon, this character will be a Trope (if it's not already).
But yeah, this could be good. I wanted to see The Book Of The Dead, but I never got around to doing so.
It definitely helps that acoustic guitar is a sound heavily associated with the setting, both on it's own and as part of a musical ensemble (such as Mariachi).
The Book Of Life did a better job at the source material for Day of the dead. Although. I think Pixar can make this good, but at the same time they will get their history mistakes wrong about the holiday. Would it be ironic if this didn't win an oscar?
What would make that ironic?
I found this article amusing. Disney actually tried to trademark "Dia de los Muertos"?!

Yep, and it's as stupid as it sounds.
Interesting though how Pixar decided to hire one of its biggest critics. I wonder how much sway he'll get.
He is actually a Pixar fan, according to Cartoon Brew. His beef was with Disney lawyers trying to trademark the name of a holiday for a movie title. I mean, you don't see John Carpenter doing that for Halloween.

Speaking of Cartoon Brew, please do not read the article Amid wrote about the COCO announcement in general. Amid is being more stupid that usual, saying that because the director is not Mexican, he's not qualified to direct a movie about Day of the Dead. The article is currently the most commented on that site in the past 2 months.

So there is a thread for this movie. I'd say now is a good time to bump it since the teaser trailer just came out:
so it begins....but too honest it does look nice and throws in some at least original elements. but, can anyone explain how Miguel died?
MIAI guess the guitar put him in the afterlife through magic.
"We be we baby!".......oh.
MIAI dunno, the way the scene plays out, it doesn't seem like Miguel actually died, more like he was just transported into the land of the Dead. Had he actually died, he (and his dog for that matter) would have become a skeleton person, too, wouldn't he?
"Wonder if Lexie's gonna be free after his shift today..."Looks avoidable.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.People were comparing this film to The Book of Life before the trailer even came out,I've not seen book of life so I can't compare them, but I'm interested in the comparisons based off the trailer we now have
New theme music also a boxFor me it looks lovely, if a bit stereotypical. I hope its great!
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I'm actually incredibly excited for this. I showed this trailer to my father and he got really excited for it. Feels good to have some more representation for us Mexicans.
And yeah, I know, it does look a bit similar to The Book of Life (though I'd argue it seems to draw more from Ratatouille), but as much as I liked The Book of Life, it was incredibly flawed in many ways. This film actually has me excited and hopeful that Pixar's magic will work itself once more.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Trouble is that the The Book of Life came out first so everyone basically thinks they are copying an existing film,,it doesn't help Disney tried to copyright the festival's name
New theme music also a boxYeah, Disney trying to copyright El Dia de Los Muertos is stupid.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? Why did they even try to do that, anyway?
Oh God! Natural light!Hmm... I'm tempted to say that this is probably just a little too close to Book of Life for me but at the same time, there are so few movies based around the holiday that I'm going to let it slide.
This song needs more love.> Why did they even try to do that, anyway?
So they could exclusively market it the using the title.

The main character of The Book of Life plays a guitar
