I seeeeee.

I sort of really want an open-world exploration game set in the Land of the Dead. I would dive into the Aztec-looking temples. Man that place looks amazing.

I'm extra disturbed by the skeletons having skeleton lips that cover their skeleton teeth.

Also, the following entry from Coco is incorrect

  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: After Miguel returns to the living, he decides to ignore the "no music" rule and performs "Remember Me" for Mamá Coco to make her remember Héctor.

By this point he already has the blessing of his dead family with explicitly "No conditions". There is no rule against music by the time he sings to Mama Coco.

His living family still prohibits music at that point. Maybe that's what it's referring to.

His living family is still upholding the rule but his father stops Elena before she can prevent him from singing Remember Me to Coco, because he can tell it's an urgent matter to Miguel.

I have noticed the most popular Coco fics by a very large margin are 'something bad happens to Héctor'.

Hasn't he suffered enough? XD

Does anyone know an old movie known as Ghost? I immediately think of that after The Reveal that Ernesto killed Hector, his own best friend, for selfish reasons involving greed. Also, the latter trying to attack him when he found out the truth is also noticeable. This matches the relationship of Sam Wheat and Carl Bruner. Is that a good Counterpart Comparison?

It's kind of funny how, overall, Ernesto is probably Disney / Pixar's most successful villain.

He had, what, nearly ninety years of fame, luxury and complete success? - even in the afterlife, where he lived practically like a king with not even a hint of discovery, let alone punishment. Even Palpatine only kept his power for thirty years or so, up to fifty-ish if you count the time he was chancellor.

Yeah, and would have still kept his reputation, if Miguel didn't come into the land of the dead.

Ernesto was my favorite villain of 2017. Though admittedly a lot of that was the unintentional topicality of the your-idol-could-be-a-monster plot.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

Yeah, animation takes a long time, but it was by coincidence it came out during the Me Too movement, which made the surprise villain twist rather accepted rather than criticized.

The "celebrity villain". Disney had a recent storm of "Surprise" villains, like Hans from Frozen, King Candy Turbo from Wreck-it Ralph, etc. Ernesto would have been the latest in an ever growing queue, but the Me Too movement revealed a bunch of sexual predators among Hollywood celebs, which made Ernesto's surprise villainy more acceptable (as a storytelling element) by making it more "realistic".

Also, PIXAR themselves got wrapped up in the Me Too! movement.

Ernesto's villainy also stands out as being very realistic in a movie (and a company, really) that thrives on the fantastical.

The crime he committed, the reasons he did it, and the success he sought after are all things that happen every day - especially during that time period. He's not even an example of exaggerated but realistic villainy, like Frollo, yet the aftereffects of his greed still have massive, dramatic effects - even if only for one family - all the same.

Even though he has a body count of one, the impact his actions have on his former friend and his family is really big. In a way, you could say he cursed the family with the false knowledge of Hector abandoning his family. And what he is willing to do in order to keep it covered up, is also quite disturbing since it's a deconstruction of the moral of following your heart. Ernesto is essentially a Disney main character if he had no morals about how he was going to get here he was.

The Land of the Dead would be a great Kingdom Hearts world, no?

Oh yeah, definitely. Probably too late to include it in Kingdom Hearts III at this point, though.

Beautiful world to explore, maybe needing a lot more tact before they include it though.

I'd rather not see the firestorm that happens if we get Sora dressed up with sugar skulls and other cultural costume elements.
