I am utterly fine with this merge. I think the reason no one mentioned it was because Hometown Hero is such a stub that no one realised it existed.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickA tiny problem I'd have though is that Homegrown Hero, unlike it's pendent, does not restrict itself to Hero characters (or protagonists, for that matter), but also includes any character that serves the same purpose (Audience Surrogate via nationality). So there's one minor discrepancy which could cause problems.
Yes, merge.
I think hero, protagonist, or viewpoint character are synonymous as far as this trope is concerned. The important part is that it's a main character the native audience can identify with in a foreign setting, the way I understand the trope.
Check out my fanfiction!Okay. Redirecting Hometown Hero to Homegrown Hero on the grounds of one being easier to incorporate into the other.
The former's content is saved elsewhere until further notice.

Hello, fellow Tropers.
Today, I have successfully finished YKTTW-ing the trope Home Grown Hero, and have somehow only now noticed that I've completely overlooked the existence of a nearly identical trope, under the (uncannily similar) name Hometown Hero (for one thing, it was never once brought up in the YKTTW discussion).
That said, the problem is that Hometown Hero is very much a stub of a trope; Home Grown Hero is much more fleshed out and detailed, sporting (among other things) several times the number of examples Hometown Hero does.
Seeing how both tropes are brand-new and orphaned respectively, both have hardly garnered any wicks until now.
Because of that, I'm wondering if it is possible to merge these tropes without further ado...
