The Soviets thought like that the last time, though. Didn't work out well.

China seems far more stable than the Soviet Union ever was, though.

I was speaking in terms of military approach. Otherwise the ship the CCP built runs smoothly.

Im surprise by that stability or how they seen to take the hit of nearly creating a pandemic by their sheer incompetence.

Granted, maybe that is just what the CPP what us to think.

China is having a headache over Xinjiang emigre activists in Kazakhstan, mostly. Before international media started widespread coverage of the crisis, a lot of the early work was done by the Kazakh human rights group Atajurt, which documented refugee testimonies and advocated for their legal residency inside the country. The Chinese government has pressured its Kazakh counterpart to suppress their activism over the past few years, and some high-profile Xinjiang emigres (oralman) inside the country have been on the receiving end of pretty sus knife attacks recently.

Somewhat relatedly, the CCP is worried about the IS-K threat, which is mostly based in Afghanistan but also branching into neighbouring countries. The 2016 bomb attack on the Chinese embassy in Bishkek was linked to an Uyghur IS-K operative and might've been part of a broader strategy to draw recruits from among Muslims living in Chinese territories. IS-K have also attacked Chinese Belt and Road projects in Pakistan. And seeing how neighbouring Central Asian dictatorships like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have been keen to use the IS-K threat to justify their security regimes, it's only natural for China to partner up with them on surveillance tech.

I rather doubt the PLA is going to do much in Afghanistan beyond setting up quiet border posts, though. Russia and Iran have been willing to cut deals with the Taliban as a hedge against IS-K and other transnational militant groups, and I've got the feeling that China would do the same.

I'm cross-posting these news from the Latin American thread.

In an unexpected turn of events, it has been revealed that the current scandal of vaccines being used first by politicians here in Peru rather than the population that should be getting them first was caused by the insistance of Chinese company Sinopharm to sell their vaccine here.

Sinopharm urged politicians, incluiding ex-president Martin Vizcarra to use a cargo of 2000 vaccines first as a way to "inspire confidence in the population" for their vaccine if they wanted to sell the rest to us.

Any opinions? Also, apologies because the news are in Spanish.

For once it kinda show a huge deal of values dissonance on the chinise by their excuse of testing the politicans and elites in a way to "inspired trust" seen to be in their idea of a top-down resolution of a problem.

At this rate, it wouldn't be a mad idea for China's neighbours to develop their own nuclear programs, nukes seem to be the only thing that keeps China on check.

I'm no South Eastern Asian person, but if I had a titan at my doorstep that seems to be getting more unhinged with every passing year and no one seems to be putting it in its place, then I think I would start thinking about improving my security.

China seems far more stable than the Soviet Union ever was, though.

The only way China could win in Afghanistan would be by either carpet-bombing or nuking the entire country and commit mass genocide, something that would doom the Chinese anyway by turning them into full Nazis.

It only looks stable because the CCP works very hard to crack down on dissent and to pretend that everything is hunky dory.

Keep in mind the USSR looked stable and strong for a while, until they couldn't keep up the act anymore and the whole thing fell apart.

Sure, but the way to do that isn’t a nuclear program. Nuclear programs are expensive, illegal and prone to getting you invaded.

Also it’s unnecessary. If a nuclear deterrent is what a country is after then it can be achieved by a close alliance with (and possibly even the forward deployment of nukes from) a nuclear armed rival of China.

Think how much of Europe feared Soviet invasion as thus NATO and US bases/nukes in Europe were spawned from that fear.

A Pacific mutual defence treaty is much easier to implement than a nuclear program.

And while this does come with the tradeoff of partnering up with a bigger fish with all that entails...it beats being eaten by the CCP fish.

The US has actually already has mutual defence treaties with Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, they’re just of the “we both acknowledge that someone attacking one would be dangerous for the other” style rather than the “an attack on one is an attack on both” NATO style that is actually very rare (I’m not actually aware of another full on “attack on one is an attack on all” treaty).

SEATO was actually a thing once upon a time, it was however not as tight as NATO and only 2 out of the 8 members were actually Southeast Asian countries.

China's already delivered Sinovac vaccines to Manila. Philippines is the last SEA country to get the needed vaccines. Astra is expected next.
