Castle Raleena, Stables

The source of all the noise was a bear - and two stablehands. Nid had little experience with bears, less with seemingly infuriated ones and even less with angry "supposedly tame" ones.

She watched it all unfold before her, the bear raging on and the hands struggling to keep it under control. It wasn't Nid's duty to meddle in their responsibilities, so she waited patiently for the two to notice her. One did, a feline? Claws and the eyes of a snake or possibly a cat's...

"Oh, hello. Sorry, we'll be able to help you in a minute," the girl said to her and immediately turned back towards her task. Not a minute passed and she spoke again to Nid telling her to go ahead and find a pen.

"Uh... right," Nid looked around the stable finding one not too far from the pen the bear was being held in. She looked back to see only Minna with her. "Re-" she cut herself off as she saw the warf heading off to help the stable hands. Nid smiled, hoping to see a show.

Mart suddenly drops to his knees and motions something on the ground while muttering some things about "Bullets, learn to aim, adjust weapon" If one would follow his motions and be familiar with his weapon, one would find out that he in fact plans to modify them to shoout out small objects with the pistons.

Frederick grinned as mart punched the target, and even moreso as dart powered his shots through (without even really aiming, to boot). "Very nice, very nice!" He added in as he drew the pen from earlier, and started drawing lightly in the air with it. Mart's a big guy (ironic for a dwarf) and his piston gauntlets would be great at tearing holes through people he could get his hands on. Dart's a strange one, but you cannot deny his pistol skills.

And then, the stranger showed up. Hooded, witch-capped, otherwise just sort of lurking kinda guy. His arm was kinda lumpy, but with how many different kinds of creatures there were around, he wasn't too worried. What DID catch his interest was the long revolver he used, and the confidence to aim and fire at the long range targets. This worked out well...

Dart, the quickdraw. Mart, the close range combatant. New stranger, the sniper. And good Ol' Frederick the medic.

Fredrick turned to the stranger and extended his left hand to shake. "Hell of a shot, at thirty meters." He said, turning his attention to Mart as he drew in the dirt. Fredrick held out his right hand to Mart, offering the pen to him.

Anabella grinned, scooping up the healing potion into three vials. What was left was ethereal ooze, magically-charged water that had little to no practical use. If allowed to mix with another potion the result could be volatile, however. She cracked her knuckles. "Now for some difficult ones. I need to clean out this cauldron, because the next one isn't going to be pretty. I'm gonna need some firepower. Flame draught, to be precise." She tipped her hat down smugly. "Pretty potent stuff, flame draught. You can throw it on the ground to create a sea of flames! Very touchy, and thus it needs more tender care."

After she had washed out the cauldron, she let the water come to a boil yet again, then prepared her next spell. This time, she wasn't taking any chances. If this screwed up, it could cause a disaster, and when she was brewing three potions' worth of flame draught, that could be a pretty big disaster. Using up three mana, she began to stir in the ingredients, her voice becoming more feverish with each verse that she spoke: "Salamander, ghost of flame, with this mixture, you I tame! Stir in brimstone, eye of eagle, mandrake root and hair of beagle! Let it simmer, churn and stew, add in pepper, gemstones blue! Stir and mix and mix and stir, smoke erupt and potion blur! Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble!"

Castle Raleena, outside

"Correct, but also false" Jove said, stopping just short of where the grass ended and the desert sand began outside of the castle. He turned to face Nathan. "If I turn a bundle of rocks into a rock golem, I'm not truly bringing the stones to life. It's more like conjuring an ethereal being and binding it to the rocks with the ability to manipulate them magically. Really the only difference between a rock golem and something like a water golem is what material you're binding it to" he explained to Nathan.

Jove then proceeded to start illustrating to Nathan the rituals for conjuring basic golems.

Castle Raleena, stables

"This bear is the pet of an orc; 'docile' ain't part of the job description" the boy stable hand said through grit teeth, trying to keep the pole steady.

"It's always cranky until he comes and wrestles with it" the girl added in, still helping with the pole. "If you wanna help, keep a grip on this" she muttered, without referring to what 'this' was. (Though it was obviously the pole.)

Castle Raleena, kitchens

"Are you supposed to be saying that like a crazy person?" Bachul asked, sounding a tad concerned but for the most part just confused by Anabella's chant. The craziness aside, the potion brewing was once again successful. The only problem now was waiting for the mixture to cool a little, as currently it was so hot that the cauldron was starting to faintly glow from the heat of the mixture inside; soon as it was safe to handle though, Anabella would have three flame draught potions.

Escom Ranch, combat range

"Hell of a shot, at thirty meters."

"Not good enough" the stranger muttered bitterly. He re-drew his revolver and tried again, achieving a similar result as the first time just down and right of the center. "Come on" he practically growled through his teeth, slowly letting off four more shots that were a bit closer to the center than the first two.

"Ugh" the stranger stated simply, lowering his gun and reloading it one shot at a time. One could see that his right hand was just like his left; whatever oddity was from somewhere on his forearm by the looks of it, but he kept his arm movements low enough that the cloak continued to cover his arm above his hand.

Count Escom, after watching the stranger shooting, turned his attention to Mart. "Was there something else you were going to show us, mister Steamfeather?" Count Escom asked him.

Nathan listened with as much attention as he could, watching the.

"I see...So, it's not so much of altering the object as conjuring something to animate it? Perfectly sensible."

He couldn't help but smile. Was never really the one for conjuring magic, but here he was, enjoying a lesson on golems.

Stables of Raleena

"The pole, right es?" Refran spoke, not really asking the question in a serious manner. The message got across. It was obvious, really, considering they were having a bit of trouble with it. The warf joined the fray, taking the spot where the grip could be held best without being in the way of the other two. He tried keeping the thing more steady and allowed the other two to steer. He's actually not quite sure how this helps, but it is what the two stablehands asked for...

"Not right now. I could theoretically propell little rocks, but only inaccurate. If I modify these two though," Mart points at his pistons. "I could put them inside and have a very short barrel. But that probably doesn't matter if I have comrades."

Anabella stopped to catch her breath, even Merlin freaked out at how feverish Anabella was getting casting her spell. "I'm so... sorry about that," Anabella gasped. "I need to focus on spells like that, it's too dangerous for me to lose focus." She crossed her arms, waiting for the cauldron to stop glowing red. "Well, I think that'll be good for me. Anyone who tries to mess with me will get a taste of this stuff. They won't know what hit them!" She shrugged. "I mean, they will, it's fire and all, but you know what I mean!"

After a bit, the volatile mixture had cooled down enough to be bottled. She quickly scooped up some flame draught into a bottle, immediately stopping it with a cork. She winced and hissed a bit in pain as the mixture flared up for a moment, then returned to being inert. "It needs to be stopped immediately, or it'll explode as soon as you scoop it up." She proceeded to do the same thing with the other two bottles of flame draught. "It'll stay inert until it's exposed to air again. So hopefully it should be safe to carry it around."

The bear continued to bat at the pole with the occasional growl, but with Refran helping as a third set of hands, the pole was not jumping with every hit the bear gave it. With the extra stability the stable hands were able to guide the pole over to a feeding trough and eventually deposit the hunk of meat into it. Once that was done, they finally retracted the pole, letting out sighs of relief.

"Whew, thanks man that really helped" the girl said, turning to Refran. "Did you still need help with that horse?" she asked, between catching her breath.

"Reminds me of orc blast crab roast. It's not considered done unless it explodes when you stab a fork in it" Bachul said, gazing off at the wall with a nostalgic, wistful expression. "The Countess doesn't care for orc foods, so I don't get to cook them anymore. It's a shame if you ask me, but it's a good job nonetheless" he continued, taking the time to turn the pot of chicken and dumplings.

Escom Ranch, combat range

"I've got some engineers on staff that could help you with that. It would not be free, but I could get you a discount" Count Escom offered to Mart, before glancing at Dart, though the stranger cut in before the Count could answer.

"Got other business to attend to" the stranger said, holstering his gun once again, "outlaws aren't going to sit around and wait kindly just because the Count's fighting for the throne."

"Indeed. I have the security of my district and reputation to keep. That is why he will be acting as reserve assistance; if it seems necessary, I will have him accompany you" the Count elaborated.

Ref's grip on the pole was a bit too tight, his hands now carrying a dull and faint pain with them... Nothing to worry about, though. First line of business was to let go of that pole and swing his arms behind his back. The girl's question came out and surprised nobody with what it was.

"It's not my horse, es. It's the horse of my companion, Nid, here es." Refran jerked his head towards the elf who hadn't moved since the entire bear feeding shenanigans. Rather convenient for the guy, all things considered. This way the effort wouldn't have been for nothing.

"By the way, es..." Refran had a smile come across his face. "Can I ask your name...s, or is that out of place, es?" The warf had a slight pause when he remembered there were two stable hands, and not just the girl- Wait, no, of course he knew both were there! It just, uh, slipped his mind. Refran took a few steps back, his smile quickly turning into a nervous grin when his rampaging thoughts took over. He is so bad at this...

Nid was a bit disappointed at the anticlimactic end, all of it ending too soon but that was all for the better, unfortunately.

She turned to Minna, making sure that reins were tied securely. Nid returned her attention towards Ref and the stable hands. The warf was unusually nervous and Nid wondered what made him so. She watched with utmost curiosity as Ref talked with the stable hand.

Escrom Firing Range

Frederick crosses his arms, watching the stranger fire, listening to Mart tinker, and hearing Dart be quite the colorful character. It was all quite jolly and fun, however the fancy-barreled stranger had a point. "So all this merryment is fun... but what shall our first objective be?" He asked, turning and stretching out slightly. "One idea would be to get the other counts to support our bid for the throne. Another would be to simply walk in and TAKE the throne, and see who dissents. Remove troublesome counts and put more favorable ones on their thrones."

Fredrick leaned back, watching the clouds lazily drift overhead. "We could just go for the other claimant: getting rid of other pretenders and ours is the only legitimate claim. Mind you, every count has a claim I feel... might be a good idea to forge some documents, give your blood a more royal birth..." Fredrick sighed as he kicked a stone around.

"Honestly, whatever your plan is, Sir Escrom. Me, Mart, Dart, and our newest friend here should be quite ready for whatever plans you have in store."

"Uh, okay?" the girl said with slight confusion. "I'm Celes. This is Derrick" she told Refran, motioning to the boy.

"I heard something about guests coming to help the Countess with something. That would be you guys then?" Derrick asked, moving over to a wall where some buckets of water were sitting. "Let's get your horse taken care of then" he continued, grabbing one of the buckets and hauling it over to Minna's pen.

"That's right, no time for chat. Got plenty to take care of here" Celes added apologetically and moved to start helping as well. The two stable hands went about taking care of the rest of the animals there, starting with Minna, and had to return to the servant's quarters when they were done.

Castle Raleena, kitchens

Any further comments by Bachul or response from Anabella was cut off as a human maid entered the kitchens. "Bachul, the Countess wants a good dinner for her visiting guests from Dorothan. 'Something impressive but not too gaudy' she said" the maid told the cook.

"Oh really now? I think I know just the thing" Bachul said, turning to Anabella. "Sorry miss Valentine, duty calls. If you require any more help here on another day, I'll be glad to assist you, time permitting" he told her, then quickly started grabbing various implements and ingredients from about the kitchen.

The maid looked to Anabella and gave a quick nod of her head. "Milady, the Countess has offered the use of the library to pass the time if you'd like, or I can show you to your room" the maid said to her, and would lead her where she chose.

Castle Raleena, outside

Meanwhile, a certain wizard and sage-in-training were still engulfed in the impromptu lesson outside.

"... And that's why you have to be careful about putting runes on golems" Jove said, finishing up his point about mixing different types of magic as the miniature rock golem he'd made for demonstrating thrashed around on the ground like someone having an epileptic fit. "Putting a rune of true sight on it might seem like a good idea at first; to let it see invisible things. But in practice when you try stuff like this the different magics are going to clash and make neither work right. It's like if you wanted to paint something blue and red, so you mix blue and red paint together and end up with purple" he continued, then looked over towards the castle, behind Nathan.

"Oh, hello Countess. I was showing your guest here some things about golem magic" Jove explained as the Countess walked up near Nathan.

"I see" Countess Raleena commented, looking at the spazzing golem with a raised eyebrow. "Cahnson I need to speak with you privately about the latest project I gave you" she told the wizard, then turned to Nathan and added, "I'm sorry to interrupt. We'll be having dinner later; until then you are welcome to read in the library if you'd like."

Jove gave her a nod then quickly dispelled the little golem. "We can pick this back up another time. Don't forget to keep trying new things" Jove told Nathan, then followed after the Countess.

Escom Ranch, combat range

"Suit yourself mister Steamfeather" Count Escom said to Mart, before looking at Frederick and slowly frowning more and more as the doctor continued. "I already explained my course of action to you, doctor. Do pay attention" the count told him sternly.

"As I already told you, I cannot simply have other members of the court killed. Explaining all the complexities of why would take a week; longer if you continue this trend of forgetting what I've already told you. So just trust me when I say that such a course of action would lead me to imprisonment or death. There is also no chance of me pretending that I have any more birthright for the throne as any other member of the court; the entire country knows damn well that there aren't any legitimate heirs to the throne, and no amount of forged documents will change that now. The only way for myself, or any other member of the court, to take the throne now is by overwhelming vote by the majority of the court. The only way to guarantee the throne for me is to force that majority to vote in my favor, which is where you come in" Count Escom explained at length.

"Count" the stranger then said, to get his attention.

"... Right right, you must have come to get your paycheck" Count Escom muttered after a pause. "That must be why you're even here at the ranch... Well gentlemen, I will be leaving you for now. You may continue to use the range if you wish, or return to the parlor or to the rooms you'll be staying in. Ask any of the staff if you desire a book to read or something else to pass the time with" he added to the Exlans, then headed back towards the manor with the stranger in tow.

Castle Raleena, the following day

After a small feast of a dinner, a good night's rest, and a simple breakfast, the Dorothans were led to the main dining hall, where the Countess was waiting with a map of Seliin spread on the table. "It begins today" Countess Raleena told them, and pointed to a spot near the center of the map. "It's come to our attention that Count Escom has been scouting out the silver mine in Count Rakosh's district. I think he will make a move to control the mine; the mine is by far the largest source of income for Rakosh's district, so in controlling the mine Escom could force Rakosh to support his claim for the throne. So it will be up to you to go there today, and ensure that does not happen" she informed them.

"Any questions?"

Escom Manor, the following day

After a good dinner, a nice sleep, and some breakfast, the Exlans were again gathered in the parlor where they'd first met the Count. "I have the first specific assignment for you gentlemen today" Count Escom told them, rolling a map of Seliin out on the special coffee table. "This district here" he started, pointing to one near the center, "is Count Rakosh's. Count Rakosh's district currently thrives off a silver mine. If I control that mine, Rakosh will have no choice but to support me, lest I cut off access to the mine. I have chosen this as your first target, as Count Rakosh has recently run into problems with his guards stationed there, and they quit out of frustration, meaning the mine is currently vulnerable. So you will go there to 'protect' the mine."

Count Escom paused for a moment to look at the butler Roger, who had entered the room and handed the Count a slip of paper. Escom gave Roger a thanks and glanced over the paper quickly, then looked back at the Exlans. "Now, Countess Raleena is no fool, and with Dorothan magic on her side I would not be surprised if she manages to anticipate this move. So I think you should still be expecting 'company' regardless" Count Escom explained to them.

"But I trust that you will be able to handle it?" Count Escom asked them, looking at each of them questioningly.

Nathan bowed as the countess and the wizard departed.

"Farewell then. Thank you for the lesson. I will not forget it."

With that, he made his way over to the library.

Golem magic is certainly interesting. Ironic in that I never liked studying it all that much before.

The next day.

Nathan stretched his newly awoken limbs, waiting until the Countess finished her briefing. He stayed quiet for the moment, patient and willing to let the others speak first.

Refran's heart sank when Celes needed to get back to working, rendering him unable to get to know her better... Unlucky once again! "A-Alright, es..." He weakly said, a low whimper in his voice. The Warf helped to set Minna up in her stable, then roamed around the mansion for a while.

Refran's Room

"...So, tomorrow's the day, es..." The warf was laying face-up on the bed, staring at the ceiling absentmindedly. The day was pretty long, sure, but that wasn't enough to get Ref asleep. Really, it's only just starting to dawn on him what he's actually getting himself into here. "Seliin, huh... I'm not particulary keen on Exlans, but having to oppose them, es...?" Ref continued to mutter to himself. The warf lifted up his right arm, holding out his hand to stare at it. He hadn't removed his gloves, but he seemed to stare through it anyway. After a while, he dozed off...

Castle Raleena, Dining hall

Ref listened carefully to the entire briefing, hands on his neck and a stupid grin on his face. "The silver mines, huh es? Do you have any information on who we might run in to or who to look out for, es? Like, any contacts?" Refran asks. It might've been a little out of place, but if there were any contacts this would help majorly.

There may be workers there, but I'd be surprised if they did anything besides run and hide if fighting breaks out. I don't have any contacts there, but if you get into too much trouble, I'd recommend heading to the nearby town and going to the hospital" she said to the warf.

Escrom Range

Fredrick just stared as the count re-iterated his point. Well he just lost points in that department. Took too long analyzing every OTHER thing that he missed Sir Escrom's main idea. Well shit.

Fredrick just remained silent as the count went off with the stranger, chewing his tongue lightly as he pondered what to do next. It was late, and he was tired as the stranger took off and sir mart drew in the dirt and sir dart played with his guns. He sighed and headed off to his room where he'd stay for the night, just staring at the ceiling and wondering what to do. Right now, Selian was a kingdom with no king. If Escrom wins, Exla gets itself some new land with some new desert to mine and promote the industrious and natural way of life. If dorothea wins, the perversions of their magic will turn this already barren waste to a blemish of their experimentation. Magic... cast fire and water with the same ordeals and a stupid wave of the hands. So unnatural.

Count Escrom Parlor, the next day

"A silver mine..." Fredrick repeated, eying the map. He'd rather go next door and consolidate the power base nearby, but the opportunity was a good one and he did not fault Escrom for wanting to pounce on it. "A mine has workers who are full of all sorts of ailments, from the dust in the air to the ache of daily work to the occasional family member in need of aid. A doctor would be most welcome" He remarked, wiping his brow lightly.

"Consider it done, and Rakosh's support yours."

Anabella simply went silent from the description of the orc cuisine, and shook her head. She was about to respond when the maid came into the room. She nodded. "Very well, miss. Anyway..." She turned back towards Bachul. "Thank you for your help, mister Bachul." She curtsied, taking the potions and attaching them to her belt, then heading out of the kitchen with her cat.

After a good night's rest, as they were sitting at the table, Anabella yawned, wiping her eyes with one arm. She wasn't used to getting up so early most of the time. However, she would do it if it meant becoming a better alchemist. Anabella didn't have any questions, but she wasn't sure how easy it would be for her to convince anyone not to attack her. She could probably find a pickaxe in the mine for defensive purposes, and if she was attacked, Merlin would defend her. She shook her head. "I have no questions, your majesty."

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.
