"And leave him here?" Kuroko pointed to the bound, gagged spy, and raised a single eyebrow.

Back Alley, Old Satsuma

"Taura-san or Ryu could carry him, once they get tired of the sake den," Sen said, shrugging. "We don't have much choice otherwise."

It's been fun.

The big, fat owner of the den glared at Taura as she spoke to him, complaining of the size of the serving and then simply said "Get the hell off my property, you damn horned freak. Whatever your deal is, I don't want none of it. Go get yourself drunk under a bridge!"

The owner of the den doesn't seem to be a very nice person and patience is not one of his virtues, specially with patrons who thrown down chairs as they suddenly run out when inviting drinks for the whole place.

Then again, in these establishments they don't serve in glasses, instead the cups are refilled from a jug whenever they run empty.

Still, the path to their destination lies unbarred, no more enemies are in sight and when they continue upon it, they will go up a stairway framed by statues of protective kamis, toori gates and eventually... they come upon a lonely, but big temple set high upon a hill overlooking the city... surrounded by nothing but trees.

Sanayama Monastery

"This is Sanayama Monastery, of the unparalleled autumn colours," the guide announced, the slightest hint of exasperation in his words. "You will be attended to shortly."

He strode up to the main gate, ready to deliver word to the Mitsumine lords that their applicants had arrived.

My Lord's men should be around here somewhere...

Perception check for ambushes and traps.

Sanayama Monastery
"If we had stayed at the den longer, we wouldn't have to wait as long here," Taura grumbled, unhappy that she was totally sober.

Ryu adjusted his grip on the captured spy, chains jingling lightly. "So, Ninja. First of all, I'm gonna want to stop calling you ninja, you got a name? Second, what are the facilities like here? Do we have someplace to drop our boy here off for interrogation? Zone of Truth makes stuff like that—and all other tales of otherwise gripping intrigue—a real non-issue, so we can be in and out in around 10 minutes, tops, with all we need from him. We can get briefed by the boss then get down to business without wasting much time."

"Ah." Kuroko halted, nonplussed by the barrage of questions. "You should be meeting my lord directly, but my chief - or one of his men - will want to hear what this man has to say. We could bring him with us before my lord, but if not, the monks should have rooms for meditation, where our sleeping spy may reflect on his sins."

"As for myself, I am just a guide, and certainly no 'ninja'... if you know what I mean," he added, lying through his teeth. "You are familiar with kabuki, Mister Miaalden? Then call me 'Kuroko' - for unlike actors like yourself, a stagehand is better off unseen."

If anyone wants to roll Insight, Kuroko's Deception is at a -1 modifier. He's bad at this.

"And unlike stagehands like yourself, someone familiar with fiction knows that by this point the word ninja means more than its definition." Ryu replied. "You dress in black and you're pretty dang stealthy, I'd put that close enough. Anyway, I think I'm bringing the spy with us. No offense, but I like a sure thing, and trusting someone else with a captive is just asking for trouble."

"If you're worried about the spy, just use more rope," Taura chipped in.

"Just 'Kuroko' will do, then," Kuroko muttered, perturbed by Ryu's indiscretion. "I would rather not have the word 'ninja' shouted across the rooftops, lest I end up like our friend here. And now, if you will excuse me..."

He walked up to a nearby pair of guards. "Lord Hiroshi's guests have arrived. If you would let him know..." He took a quick sideward glance at the same time, looking for a certain contact of his.

Soon enough a pair of guards moved deeper into the monastery... however, as Kuroko looked for a contact among those assembled, he likely didn't expect his very boss to appear before him. Soon enough a man he would know by the name of Iobe Sakahiko approached... slender of built with short hair let to be a little messy of a salt and pepper kind of color, black with a lot of dashes of silver hairs around. He kept a mustache and a small bit of beard on his chin which he touched a little as approached the group, wearing a comfortable pair of hakama pants and a loose jacket "Ah Kuroko, you made it, as expected... with more than the expected party" says the man, his keen eyes looking at the captured man "Did we get some curious eavesdroppers?"

Sen nodded her respect to the dignified-looking man as he spoke, folding her hands together in front of her. As he had not addressed her, she did not speak, content merely to watch for now. Her lord's message would wait for its proper time.

It's been fun.

Sanayama Monastery

"Boss!" Kuroko dropped to one knee, shocked by Master Sakahiko's presence, and began to rattle off his report as quickly as he could - the man brooked no nonsense. "As directed, the ones known as Ryu Miaalden, Sen, and Taura have arrived. We were being watched by this man here, and so we were delayed by trying to break his cover. When he attempted to flee, Miaalden put him to sleep. We found 75 gold pieces and a set of bandages on him."

There was a brief, uneasy pause.

"Our guests were promised a viewing of the autumn colours. And sake." He twitched, just a little. "Lots of sake."

Use Thieves' Cant.

Unknown to the others, though, a second message was hidden in his rambling, coded for Sakahiko's ears alone: Ring. Spider.

At the report, Sakahiko lightly nods his head with a small smile on his lips "Well done, Kuroko. We shall take care of our unexpected guess from now on" says the man, clapping his hands once as a few attendants approach quickly, carrying the spy away deeper into the monastery "Worry not, we shall return the bindings promptly enough"

"You can keep the coins, money hardly ever is inconvenient" says the man, taking a good look at the assembled group before he bids them to come into the monastery... giving them a light enough chat about the history of the place... remarking how it had been tended to for centuries by the monks of the Blue Leaf until the war with the tiger, where the warrior monks had joined the fight and found themselves slaughtered to near the last man in a particularly bitter defense of a Boar town. Since then the monastery had been left inoperative and nearly abandoned until a few months ago.

As they went inside, the group would notice that the place while old had been well maintained... or at the very least, nicely renovated. A lot of people fill the places, moving from place to place... soldiers standing guard, a few servants cleaning and tending to the place... and they even see a small group of miko's deep in prayers before a statue, one of the which the most perceptive of them may notice was nearly glowing, the light bending strangely around her.

Finally, they were led to a big hall... the door was kept by two guards, though within there were only seven people. Four guards, a young samurai, a man that seemed like a scholar or scribe and finally, Takeshi Mitsumine in the flesh, sitting down on the far side of the place, talking with the scribe and looking over his notes. On the middle of the room there were five cushions and curiously enough... a whole barrel of sake, the top of which was open with a serving pail on it.

"Please, take a seat" says Sakahiko with a smile, approaching Takeshi to sit near his side.

Takeshi for his part looks at the group and nods his head, instructing his scribe to stop for now "Well, it seems like the whole group is here. Welcome all to what is to be your base of operations. We have much work before us"

"Don't mind if I do," Taura said, serving herself a cup of sake with the pail before sitting down.

"Alright then, down to business. Who do you need dead?"

Sanayama Monastery - Main Hall

That may well be my fate someday.

Kuroko had watched as his boss's men led the captive away, and felt an all-too-familiar chill run down his spine. But he said nothing, and walked with the others to meet with the young lord of the Mitsumine - a great honour indeed.

"I await your instructions, my lord." Kuroko bowed respectfully and took up his own cup, but did not drink yet. He chose instead to watch the three adventurers whom he'd led to the monastery, ready to intervene if any of them posed a threat to his master.

"Hey now, Taura!" Ryu took a seat himself, holding up his hands to her. "We can't assume they need someone killed! Now, let me handle this." He turned to face the monk. "Who do you need spoken to with the implicit threat of getting killed?"

Sen didn't react to Ryu's joke, perhaps not taking it as a joke at all. "My lord sends his regards to your house and yourself," she said, bowing low to Takeshi. "I am Sen, a weapon to use as you see fit." She straightened. "I must speak with you and the young lord, however. I have information that must be reported."

It's been fun.

Ougen, the young samurai that was already there examined the newcomers with his one eye from where he sat off a little bit to the side and he nodded a greeting to them.
