Well, Capheus's mom is going to die eventually, and the people in Kala's and Will's orbit are not very important, so there is room for new people, but I don't see how the show would work without Amanita, or Hernando, not to mention the 8 obviously.

Well, eventually they might want to show the...consequences of someone in the Cluster dying.

I can even see (purely theoretical) them whittling the Original 8 down a bit and ending with one of them birthing a new Cluster which take the spotlight.

Long-term, I mean.

I mean... Will kinda has to die now, right? Because unless they go and kill Whispers, if he's conscious long enough, everyone else is screwed.

Nah, this is set up for them to use Will to track down Whispers and kill him. It'd damn stupid to waste all the trouble they went through keeping him alive to kill him later.

I hope nobody in the main cluster dies. ABSOLUTELY NOBODY. They are all my favorites and I hope they find a workaround to get to Whispers somehow.

[up][up][up] They can either have Will fight back by visiting Whispers to track him down and take him out, or they can reveal a way to break the connection that for some reason Angelica didn't discover/couldn't use.

My best answer for how to deal with Will's status as The Load is either blind him (I mean temporarily) so that Mr. Whispers can't get too much information from him only when they need to use him.

Other than that, just kill off Whispers.

So far, my only issue is that the series is great at displaying relationships (Lido and Nomi's love lives), but they're not that good at BUILDING relationships; Kaya and Wolfgang's attraction seems... out of nowhere as they know nothing about each other, and the same goes for Riley and Will's. They just start kissing without much build up.

I thought it was built up fine, and the relationships are mostly physical these days. The show isn't saying they should get married and have All the Babies, clusters just promote extreme amounts of caring for obvious reasons.

Hell Wolfgang told her to her face that he was bad for her just as they were feeling things out.

It just felt... Unprompted. Why kiss? Why do they care about each other in a romantic sense? I don't see why they're attracted to each other.

I can see why Lito and his boyfriend are an item; they support and inspire and love each other clearly though they have their share of flaws.

But I don't exactly see why Riley feels the need to make out with Will when they really haven't known each other for very long and haven't done anything all that romantic.

Even more egregious on Kala and Wolfgang's side where I didn't even realize that she had feelings for him in that way until they kissed which entirely came out of nowhere. I don't know what she sees in him to promt these feelings and I can't see what he sees in her since neither really know anything about each other.

I'm always open to the idea that there's something I'm not seeing, but it does make me feel a bit confused. It just ended up feeling forced and out of nowhere to me. I'm not objecting to two characters being romantic to each other and etc, but it just wasn't clear to me as to why or even when exactly these feelings started.

The old Islandic lady seems to consider relationships inside clusters to be unhealthy, and while that might just be her personal baggage, I do think the cluster links are what is putting a lead weight on the fast forward button of those two relationships. - They have a telepathic link!

That means that all the stages of wondering what the other person is feeling gets skipped merrily right past. They just know. Their romances are supposed to be sudden, and possibly, they are even a very bad idea.

Quick thoughts:

- I knew from the second Kala said "I don't love my perfect fiance" that she was going to have a strong physical attraction to the darkest, most murdery character of the group. But it's enjoyable enough for me to go along with it. Very, very enthusiastically. Meaning I hardcore ship two people who aren't even in the same country (yet).

- Kala is a dear. She was so realistically conflicted in having a comfortable but dispassionate life with Rajan. And she knew she was unhappy from the beginning, but just went along because everyone was so happy. The passiveness of not wanting to disappoint anyone and say no is such a pervasive problem for women of all cultures, but Asian cultures are famously bad.

- I think Capheus is everyone's favorite character so, I agree. He needs lots of food and medicine for his mom. And Kala happens to be a pharmacist and a restaurant owner's daughter, so... it's just a matter of time, probably. And the fact that he does morally questionable things but still remains unambiguously good at heart is great.

- Sun is my personal favorite character. I cried when she gave her dog to her teacher. Dialogue would have ruined that scene—the shot of Sun putting her chin on her dog's head brought me to tears because I, and every other dog owner I know, does this. She has the same problem as Kala, being so loyal to her family that she avoids her own needs, but Sun is not passive at all. Sun never waits for other people to make a decision. She makes every decision to do with her life, even if they are spectacularly wrong and cause her immense pain, and I can respect that level of agency.

- I felt very ambiguous about Riley and Wolfgang until I realized they were realistic depictions of introverted and traumatized individuals, who have problems handling or expressing emotion. And it's not romanticized for either of them. They are in horrible mental health and they're doing their best, but they do need support to pick themselves up out of apathy. It is a little painful to watch their scenes, but because they remind me of my own bad days where I am so irritable I lash out at anyone for no reason, or I cope with stress by avoiding people.

- Even though he's the most self-centered character, Lito is so fun to watch.

- Will is actually my least favorite character. He's harmless, and I don't hate him, but honestly I've seen enough clean-cut white American men who Always Do The Right Thing to be very bored in all of his scenes.

So I decided to bite the bullet and watch the first episode just now.

...I'm pretty invested.

I mean, are the Wachowskis really directed this? Because last time I checked, their stuff has:

  • Pretentious made-up names.
  • Characters not smiling and taking stuff too seriously.
  • People talking for long periods of time.

And some other weirdo stuff that I can't remember right on the top of my head. Maybe it's because J. Michael Straczynski is there to make sure they don't ruin this show with the stuff they're (in)famous for?

I wonder how Doug Walker and his brother will respond to this one.

(For those wondering, Doug Walker (better known as The Nostalgia Critic) has been poking fun at some the Wachowskis' works lately, namely The Matrix Trilogy and Jupiter Ascending. But how he and his brother (Rob)'ll think of Sense8 is anyone's guess...)

Honestly, I don't follow Doug Walker at all, so I also don't care.

The Wachowskis have really mellowed. This happened with Jupiter Ascending, but Sense8 is helped by the fully fleshed out ensemble cast. When the show is serious, it's muted and monochrome and tensely quiet, but when it's cheerful, there's so many colors and the optimistic characters are so optimistic.

Like, I don't get bored watching this show because all I have to do is wait for the scene to shift to another character.

Honestly, maybe its just me but I do see a lot of JMS touch in the dialogue and so. Its little things but they do make me think of B5 when I notice them.

Don't worry, the show gets more and more pretentious as it goes. It frustrates me, because I like the basic concept, but the execution is annoyingly on the nose and the characters are way too accepting that they suddenly have seven other guys in their head. They are also annoyingly accepting of each other. I mean, really? I am all for tolerance, but one would think that a cop confronted with a drug addict would react a little bit less accepting.

Maybe but said cop is shown from the get go to be pretty fair and understanding, even willing to save a shot gangbanger kid who his partner and even the hospital would have let died.

I say him being not immediately judgmental about it is pretty much in character for Will.

[up]Which was another scene which raised my eyebrow. Are there really hospitals which don't accept gunshot victims, not even when said victim is on the verge to bleed out, even though they have the ability to treat them? And even if there is, I found it grating how even the nurse kept saying that this boy might kill someone some day. I don't know, is it a given that every boy who ends up with a gunshot wound is a gang member? Can't they simply be innocent victims of a drive-by shooting? Wouldn't that be the more important issue to discuss in the show instead of the question if this specific child might become a killer later or not?

I found it a bit annoying too, but then it doesn't annoy me as much because then we'd be having the same info dump every single time. I don't mind much that we had the Origin Story plot done once and we all moved on to the main plot. Kept the pace up for the better.

However, I kind of was annoyed that a lot of the things that happened don't feature as much as they should, especially considering some of them haven't met at that point. The Pansexual Orgy comes to mind since, as far as we're made aware, there are 5 min involved (Lido's BF) indirectly and only 2 of those 5 are shown to be gay. There's a small joke later on, but its odd that none of them are uncomfortable with the situation or bring it up later.

Not to mention I get the impression that Kala is a virgin, yet she is also involved in this mess and she never mentions it either?

I know there's the whole 'Well, they feel how eachother feel and it makes things ok', but the more and more that is used for things, the weaker and weaker it ends up feeling.

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013
#75: Jul 1st 2015 at 11:08:06 AM

[up]Yeah, exactly. The characters are way too calm about what happens to them. And I wish they were more...normal. And I don't talk about their sexuality with that. But they all have the kind of baggage I normally get to see in a soap opera, not in real life.

But speaking of sexuality, what was the point of the orgy? I don't mind sex in TV or same gender sex, but I do mind it if sex seems only to be there to show off. Or if characters are randomly talking about sex in a way I just can't imagine would happen in real life. I mean, who goes up to a dude and tells him "I want to see how you well you f... my former girlfriend"? That's really stretching it.

It's too bad because I really love the concept of the show and the basics of the characters. I want to like this. But the show makes it nearly impossible for me.
