It's not that these people don't understand the biology, it's that they think you can circumvent it or, free them from it as I saw someone put it "nature took them so far now let's help them have a cruelty free diet" or something like that refer to the act of predation as cruel or something that predators do, or even should, care about.
Actually, yeah I guess a lot of that does come from not understanding biology.

We seem to all be in agreement that this practice is dumb. As a consequence, this discussion is lacking an opposing party and is turning into an echo chamber. Can we call this one solved?

No, because as said above, those two groups often overlap, and to recognize that it is not all of them I use words like "some" and "many" which means I should either run for congress since I seem to ascribe to political bullshit buzzwords, or I am purposefully using vague numeral descriptors in an attempt to refer only vaguely to a potential theory.
