I know that he's Brazilian. The actress who plays Cecilia is also latina. But here we are talking about race, not ethnicity. They straight up casted the whitest Latinos to play prominent black latinos.
At least in the case of Sunspot, Marvel has been doing a terrible job with his handling and he constantly becomes whiter with time
, so the filmmakers aren't entirely to blame, but in the case of Cecilia is just jarring, she has always been depicted as a black latina.
I'm also finding out they originally offered the role to Rosario Dawson, which would have been great, but then they ended casting a white latina instead when they couldn't get her.

Ahhhh, I see now.
I mean the casting thing is on Old Fox's lap, but the whitening of Sunspot in the comics? I actually don't know what to say to that.
Hmmm. Maybe if the movie turns out well to some capacity, they can acknowledge it the same way the MCU acknowledges The Incredible Hulk while recasting as necessary?
I mean, going for the whitest Latinos feels like a deceptive trick...
But hey, if Kevin Feige really is hardcore-type, maybe he'll mandate Sunspot's true race now that he's Chief Creative Officer of Marvel in general?
Actually I'm really stumped...

Well it’s definitely coming. And the only real question is “why?” We know these character won’t be in the MCU because most of them aged out of the roles between production and release. We know the Fox Men ended with the equivalent of a wet fart thanks to Dark Phoenix.
This is essentially a really expensive Failed Pilot Episode. And it’s not really their fault, but it was a movie designed to breath new life into a franchise, while the franchise had already been put to rest.
So here we are. But to be fair, the cast aren’t to blame. They didn’t know Disney was coming with all the money.

I'm still not convinced this movie's doomed yet.
I mean, yeah, Disney kinda HAD to release it in some form out of contractual obligations, but they could have just plopped it onto Disney+ and pretend it never existed. Ergo, them keeping it in theaters has to mean they see something salvageable.
Plus, I already saw some positive buzz about Illyana and her Soulsword, so...

(The cover of Warren Ellis' Nextwave issue 11, which had Machine Man holding a sign reading, of course, "Mark Millar Licks Goats.")
They did a screening for the cast.
Also, this theatrical release poster is pretty frickin' awesome.

This slipped under the radar, didn't it?
The New Mutants is rated PG-13 for reasons unknown.
And with a runtime of one hour and 39 minutes, the movie also holds the distinction of being the shortest-running X-Men movie alongside being the last X-Men movie produced by the old Fox regime before the Disney/Fox buyout.

Bump:
Yesterday, I went to a job fair and talked with someone who was ecstatic for The New Mutants. We came to an understanding that, as it is, The New Mutants is a standalone affair.
With that in mind, what would it take for Anya Taylor-Joy to be MCU!Magik?
I reckon there'd have to be special circumstances like:
- The movie making some kind of bank, which may be tricky given how overdue it is.
- The movie being liked by critics, which also might be tricky since they might burnt out on Fox mutants at this point.
- General consensus including something like ATJ being one of, if not, the best part of the movie, hands down.
- ATJ's schedule allowing her to come back to a role she did three years ago. Furthermore, she'd probably have to do it under a new contract under Marvel Studios since The New Mutants was an entirely Fox-made venture.

If the cast of Sunspot wasn't enough, they just straight up erased one of the most prominent black latinas in comics.
Fuck this movie.
Plus, I reckon the doctor is gonna get offed by the time the movie's done, so maybe they changed it to avoid Unfortunate Implications.
Also, holy cow, does Illyana's metal arm have some kind of magical version of nanotechnology going on? Because that was a cool effect.
Also, demon bear.
