I know that (I was defending the prospect of TLOU even as a non-gamer purely because of how hard Chernobyl went, and ended up not liking it as much as Chernobyl lol)...but it is enough of a pattern with Disney to hand the reins to a $200M joint to someone with a currently-buzzy small film (in the MCU we'd observed Waititi/Thor, Zhao/Eternals, Da Costa/Marvels) to be obvious that it's not "creative potential that the public has not yet seen" that they are after.

I can't remember the name but there was an indie director who reported that Marvel contacted her about helming a movie and when she got excited about developing the story and action/VFX set pieces their response was "Don't worry about that." Kind of peels back the illusion of whose movie it really is.
It was probably Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi who set the precedent of hiring indie genre filmmakers for these superhero films. Beforehand big budget directors typically came from, believe it or not, music video directors.
Comics are just words and pictures. You can do anything with words and pictures. It was Lucrecia Martel talking about
Black Widow.

They kinda already have—or at least for part of it—with The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
...Okay, it's barely the same thing—but hence the "kinda"! :P
My Games and Asset PacksGive us a live-action "Rite of Spring" with photorealistic dinosaurs!
...or I can just rewatch Prehistoric Planet on Apple TV+.
Was on Rifftrax's Twitch channel and they showed a live action Aladdin film from 1990 that was apparently produced for The Disney Channel.
It features Barry Bostwick as the Genie.
It was certainly... an experience.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!Disney also did Return to Oz way back in the 1980s and that movie had some pretty horrific moments in it.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!@Rabbitearsblog I suspect it's down to not needing to.
To my understanding, Touchstone Pictures for a very long time wasn't a separate company from Disney in any meaningful way. It was essentially an alternate pen name or the film industry equivalent of a virtual brand.
Essentially, Disney wants to make more mature movies, but feared that the Disney Brand might be harmful to the movie (or vice-versa). People might assume the mature movie is for kids, or they might not believe that the guys at Disney could make a mature movie.
So, what did they do? They have their regular Disney team make the mature movie...and then just slap a different company's logo on it! Still a product by the same people, but people might approach it with different expectations than if they had openly sold it as a Disney product.
Nowadays, Disney is a bit more expansive and I don't think they need to pretend to be another company.
Leviticus 19:34Yeah I remember reading how Roger Rabbit and Nightmare Before Christmas were going to be released under the Disney banner, but Disney got cold feet with both filns, and released them under Touchstone.
In fact Nightmare was going to be a part of the Disney Animated Canon before the switch, which explains why there was no Disney animated feature film in 1993.

@sync: Tbf the creator of Chernobyl perhaps one of the best docu dramas of all time. Previous works were Scary Movie 3 and The Hangover 2. People can really surprise you outside their wheel house.
