Disney's Live-Action Thread

Becuase the amount of Live Action remake threads are getting cluttery, I made this thread so people could discuss all of them in one neat place. For ease of catching up, I'll post all the Live action Disney movies we have and the movies that will be coming soon.

[up]Are you talking about on this site specifically or just in general? Because there is a lot of discourse surrounding this film, just not on this site apparently.

And while I agree that this is a pretty stacked summer for blockbusters, it's still interesting considering this movie has had more buzz and press than the majority of those blockbuster films. Spiderverse is one of the only films I think of that genuinely had a huge amount of hype behind it for the summer, the other ones being Barbie and to a lesser degree, The Flash.

Also, there's a reason the film is not doing well overseas that should be talked about, but I can see why its not being discussed here because it's not the thread for it.

[up]The film isn't doing all that well compared to the other remakes because of a variety of reasons: a significant one is that, as the film that started the Renaissance, The Little Mermaid isn't as well-known as later successes like Aladdin and The Lion King, and these remakes rely heavily on nostalgia-driven watchers. Of course, there are The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, and Maleficient remaking films from the Silver Age and still making a lot of money, but I think they had much more of the novelty factor by then. That's why I think Disney's attempt to turn their remakes into franchises is short-sighted, as most of those films have large budgets and rely on huge box offices to succeed, which is not always going to happen without nostalgia. Cinderella (2015) actually made less than The Little Mermaid is doing now, but it had the advantage of having half of the budget.

That and it's budget is immense. It would honestly be a success if it didn't cost so damn much.

I actually talked to a couple of people from these regions (south America, Asia) and Said the original is just not really a film that left an impact on their country's childhoods compared to say beauty and the beast or aladdin. Mixed with the long run time (like 2 and a half hours is immense for a kids works) meant they just didn't bother. And we'll it's a recipe for not great things.

Something I noticed some time ago is any film that involves a lot of water ends up with a huge budget.

This film, Waterworld, Titanic, Evan Almighty, Underwater, Aquaman, etc.

Probably because of all the cgi I think ? Or may be it's the live action work.

Mind you Titanic and avatar way of water can make it work. Because never bet against James Cameron being a box office success.

Water is generally considered to be really hard to animate, especially if you're going for photorealism. And even you use real water, that's also a headache since you have to work around all the electrical devices that are required on a film shoot.

During France's Annecy Animation Film Festival, Disney made a couple of announcements regarding their animated projects.

Notably, there's going to be a preschool animated series loosely modelled after The Little Mermaid (2023), known as Disney Junior's Ariel'. https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ariel_63.jpg

Furthermore, according to The Wrap, the live action Moana film is expected to debut in June 27, 2025,.

[up]That's curious. I've never seen Disney doing new side-works alongside remakes, normally they stick to the original films.

Women Talking’s Sarah Polley talking to Disney about “live-action” Bambi

Oscar-winner Sarah Polley is reportedly in talks with Disney about directing yet another “live-action” remake. Hoping to depress the hell out of kids who live in ignorance that their parents and everyone they know will one day perish from this earth, Polley is in discussions for a Bambi remake, reports Deadline.

I am one of Women Talking's like eight editor fans on this website, I liked it, it made me cry... and I cannot fathom how Disney saw "minimalist, dialogue-driven play about rape culture" and said "yes, the perfect director for our deer movie". Besides the "directed by Academy Award winner Sarah Polley" branding they get to do now, of course.

The Barry bit about Sian Heder gets more and more relevant:

[up][up][up] In fairness every director makes crap at least one point in their career whether due to working for a big franchise thing or just making a plain bad story. tongue

I hope Disney learns from Lion King's mistakes and just makes it a faux-nature documentary with or without narration, but I doubt this.

[up][up][up]No, but the bit is specifically making fun of the "acclaimed indie director immediately snapped up for a Disney CGI express" pipeline, which doesn't apply to Scorsese.

I actually liked the new Little Mermaid better than the original, mainly because it gave Ariel more agency of getting herself out of the deal she made with Ursula by killing that witch herself.
