The film isn't doing all that well compared to the other remakes because of a variety of reasons: a significant one is that, as the film that started the Renaissance, The Little Mermaid isn't as well-known as later successes like Aladdin and The Lion King, and these remakes rely heavily on nostalgia-driven watchers. Of course, there are The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, and Maleficient remaking films from the Silver Age and still making a lot of money, but I think they had much more of the novelty factor by then. That's why I think Disney's attempt to turn their remakes into franchises is short-sighted, as most of those films have large budgets and rely on huge box offices to succeed, which is not always going to happen without nostalgia. Cinderella (2015) actually made less than The Little Mermaid is doing now, but it had the advantage of having half of the budget.

oh hey how are you doing? That and it's budget is immense. It would honestly be a success if it didn't cost so damn much.
I actually talked to a couple of people from these regions (south America, Asia) and Said the original is just not really a film that left an impact on their country's childhoods compared to say beauty and the beast or aladdin. Mixed with the long run time (like 2 and a half hours is immense for a kids works) meant they just didn't bother. And we'll it's a recipe for not great things.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Something I noticed some time ago is any film that involves a lot of water ends up with a huge budget.
This film, Waterworld, Titanic, Evan Almighty, Underwater, Aquaman, etc.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!Probably because of all the cgi I think ? Or may be it's the live action work.
Mind you Titanic and avatar way of water can make it work. Because never bet against James Cameron being a box office success.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."During France's Annecy Animation Film Festival, Disney made a couple of announcements regarding their animated projects.
Notably, there's going to be a preschool animated series
loosely modelled after The Little Mermaid (2023), known as Disney Junior's Ariel'.
Furthermore, according to The Wrap
, the live action Moana film is expected to debut in June 27, 2025,.
Women Talking’s Sarah Polley talking to Disney about “live-action” Bambi
Isn't this a Saturday night live sketch ?
Omg yes it is Dwayne played bambi
(vin diesel as Thumper).
Satire is dead.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I am one of Women Talking's like eight editor fans on this website, I liked it, it made me cry... and I cannot fathom how Disney saw "minimalist, dialogue-driven play about rape culture" and said "yes, the perfect director for our deer movie". Besides the "directed by Academy Award winner Sarah Polley" branding they get to do now, of course.
The Barry bit about Sian Heder gets more and more relevant:

In fairness every director makes crap at least one point in their career whether due to working for a big franchise thing or just making a plain bad story.
What you telling me Martin Scorsese didn't have some stinkers?

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

And while I agree that this is a pretty stacked summer for blockbusters, it's still interesting considering this movie has had more buzz and press than the majority of those blockbuster films. Spiderverse is one of the only films I think of that genuinely had a huge amount of hype behind it for the summer, the other ones being Barbie and to a lesser degree, The Flash.
Also, there's a reason the film is not doing well overseas that should be talked about, but I can see why its not being discussed here because it's not the thread for it.
